♪ ♪ it's tuesday, march 30th, 2021. this is the "cbs morning news." dramatic day of testimony. all eyes on the derek chauvin murder trial. how the prosecution and defense gives two very different accounts on the day george floyd died. >> we must work together now to prevent a fourth surge. impassionmpassioned plea. the cdc director goes off script on covid. hern ee at last. a giant vessel is no longer stuck in the suez canal but there's still a problem from his six-day saga.

good morning. good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. well, the trial of the former minneapolis police officer accused of killing george floyd resumes today. opening statements got off to a dramatic start yesterday. prosecutors showed video of derek chauvin kneeling on ge floyd's neck for more than 9 minutes as he struggled to breathe. skyler henry is minneapolis. skyler, what's expected to happen in the trial today? >> reporter: hey, anne-marie, good morning. well, we're expecting to hear from more witnesses today one of which is the current minneapolis police chief who accused the former police officer of having a history of using excessive force. prosecutors did not mince words as they laid out their case against former police officer derek chauvin. >> i will tell you that you can believe your eyes that it's a homicide. it's murder. >> reporter: the trial's first day featured opening statements from both sides.

the prosecution played for the jury the cell phone video showing george floyd gasping for air. >> he put his knees upon his neck and his back, grinding and crushing him until the very breath. , ladies and gentlemen, until the very life were squeezed out of him. >> reporter: the defense offered a very different take on what happened. >> you'll learn that derek chauvin did exactly what he had been trained to do over the course of his 19-year career. >> reporter: defense attorney eric nelson said floyd's death was the result of drug abuse and underdrying heart condition. >> evidence is far greater than 9 minutes and 21 seconds. >> reporter: day one also included the trial's first witnesses, among them a 911 operator who watched floyd's arrest, who initially

thought it had frozen because the retrain had gone on so long. that dispatcher said she then called the police on the police. something she had never done before. >> my instincts were telling me that something was wrong. something was not right. i didn't know what, but something wasn't right. >> reporter: chauvin was charged with second degree murder as well as second degree manslaughter. he's pleaded not guilty. that trial is expected to pick back up this morning. lawyers on both sides making it abundantly clear to prove exactly how george floyd died will be crucial in this trial. anne-marie. >> all right. skyler henry in minneapolis. skyler, thank you so much. president biden is warning americans to not let down their guard as the number of new coronavirus cases increased in more than half the country. annod 90% of the country april and the white hous exp the number of pharmacies that can administer the vaccine. right now, 95 million people in the u.s. have received at least one dose. and more than 52 million are fully vaccinated.

that is nearly 16% of the total population. mola lenghi reports on the efforts to keep people safe. >> reporter: fourth wave fears. >> feeling i have an impending doom. >> reporter: as cases continue to rise nationwide, blunt words from the head of the cdc. >> so much reason for hope, but right now i'm scared so i'm speaking to you not necessarily as a cdc director, but as a wife, as a mother, as a daughter to ask you to hold on just a while longer. >> reporter: cases are up 10% with hospitalizations on the rise. as life looks more like it did prepandemic in much of the country. 43 states have allowed most or all businesses to reopen. and 17 don't have mask mandates. this as much of europe is seeing another spike. and doctors say paris hospitals are about to hit catastrophic overload. >> the trajectory of the pandemic in the united states

looks similar to many other countries in europe. i'm calling on our elected officials to sound the alarm. we must work together now to prevent a fourth surge. >> reporter: new jersey now seeing the nation's largest spike per capita. >> we have to push back against our pandemic fatigue. >> reporter: and florida seeing reported cases of the more contagious uk variant, more than doubling just in the past four days. but there is some good news. a new cdc of health care workers showing the pfizer and moderna vaccines are 95% effective after two doses. and 85% effective after just one. and that the vaccines can reduce asymptomatic infections. meanwhile as the death toll nears 450,000, the stunning admission from president trump's former pandemic coordinator. >> there were 100,000 deaths that came from the original surge.

all of the rest of them in my mind who have been mitigated or decreased substantially. >> that was mola lenghi reporting. new york state which was once the epicenter of the covid outbreak is expanding vaccine eligibility. starting today, anyone over the age of 30 can now get a shot. and people over the age of 16 can get a shot starting next tuesday. a public memorial service will be held today for the officer killed at a mass shooting at a colorado supermarket. family and friends gathered yesterday at a funeral to remember officer eric talley. the 51-year-old was first on the scene last monday after reports of an active shooter. the gunman killed the officer along with nine other people. talley's father said that his son will always be remembered as a hero. >> he was there to help people. and he was unselfish. if he's known for anything, it's for doing the right thing. because that's what he did by running in there. he did the right thing. >> talley was an 11-year-old veteran of the police force. he leaves behind a wife and seven children.

the container ship that got stuck in the suez canal is safely anchored this morning. experts are looking at the vessel for damage, but it was quite a celebration yesterday after tugboat crews helped free the vessel. ♪ >> the massive ship got stuck last tuesday, blown sideways in a sandstorm. the jam held up more than 370 ships carrying commodities from crude oil to cattle. experts believe it could take at least another ten days to clear up the entire backlog. so, coming up, another woman is accusing new york governor andrew cuomo of giving her an unwanted kiss. and rebranding volkswagen, may be ready to announce a name change. this is the "cbs morning news." change. this is the "cbs morning news."

authorities say the chopper carrying guides and guests on a. ssger survived. among the dead, petr kellner, one of the richest men in the czech republic. recovery of the wreckage is now a priority for inverstigators. senator thom tillis is scheduled to undergo surgery and there are new allegations against new york governor andrew cuomo. those are some of the headlines on the newsstands. the associated press reports a woman sherry vill made the announcement yesterday saying that cuomo grabbed her face and kissed her cheek while visiting her rochester home to inspect flood damage. vill said the kiss in her front of her family was done in a

highly sexual manner. >> i felt shocked and didn't understand what had happened. but i knew i felt embarrassed and weird about his kissing me. >> she said cuomo also told her she was beautiful. in a statement, the governor's lawyer said that he has frequently sought to comfort new yorkers amid crisis. vill is the ninth woman to accuse cuomo of touching anyone inappropriately but said that he's sorry if he made anyone uncomfortable. and the raleigh news says that thom tillis will undergo surgery for prostate cancer next week. the 60-year-old republican who won a second term in november made the announcement yesterday. he said doctors caught the cancer early through a psa blood test and he expects to make a full recovery. still ahead now, the devil is in the details. nike is suing a sneaker maker for creating satan shoes, that's

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. your 2020 best of show. >> that was last year's winner of westminster dog show but this year's dog will crowned by dogs in the stands. the westminster kennel club announced that spectators and vendors are banned from this year's event. the decision was made due to the coronavirus. the pandemic also pushed the canine competition from its usual february date to june. on the "cbs moneywatch," air travel is taking off and a carmaker announces a name claim.

diane king hill is in new york. good morning. >> good morning, stock futures with a bumpy mix. the cause for optimism as the suez canal reopened with shipping vessels. the dow opened up 98 points. the nasdaq fell 79 and the s&p 500 fell 3 points. americans are taking to the skies. travelers at airports across the country during a roughly two-week period in march. for 17 days in a row, the agency has screened more than 1 million travelers in a market that has been hit extremely hard during the pandemic. visa is the first major credit card company to announce it will allow the use of cryptocurrency usc coins to settle transactions. the company reportedly launched the pilot program with crypto coin.com.

we're selling the place, 6:00 a.m.! >> you c motel from the emmy award winning tv show "schitt's creek." the once functioning motel is on the market for $1.6 million. exteriors were used in the show, the lift listing says it has ten guest rooms, a separate suite and cottage and parking lot. fans from across the world visit to see the motel's famous facade. and we now know two of the teams headed to the men's ncaa final four. baylor defeated arkansas, they will face number two seed houston saturday. the cougars flew a 17-point lead bt held on to defeat oregon state 67-61. it's houston's first appearance in the final four in 37 years. we'll find out who the other two final four teams are tonight.

nike is suing a new york-based company over its lil nas x satan shoes. the sneaker giant ahem for infringement for the black and red themed shoes. the shoe which went on sale yesterday is a customized version of nike's air max 7. it has nike's famous swoosh and it also contains a drop of human blood. and lil nas x is not named in the lawsuit. the shoes which sold out in minutes cost more than $1,000. and a soon to be homeless shelter in los angeles will bear the name of the late show alex trebek. and trebek's family revealed the sign for the hope of the valleys trebek center. it was once a skating rink that is converted in a shelter now.
