♪ ♪ it's tuesday, march 30th, 2021. this is the "cbs morning news." dramatic day of testimony. all eyes on the derek chauvin murder trial. how the prosecution and defense gives two very different accounts on the day george floyd died. >> we must work together now to prevent a fourth surge. impassionmpassioned plea. the cdc director goes off script on covid. hern ee at last. a giant vessel is no longer stuck in the suez canal but there's still a problem from his six-day saga.

good morning. good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. well, the trial of the former minneapolis police officer accused of killing george floyd resumes today. opening statements got off to a dramatic start yesterday. prosecutors showed video of derek chauvin kneeling on ge floyd's neck for more than 9 minutes as he struggled to breathe. skyler henry is minneapolis. skyler, what's expected to happen in the trial today? >> reporter: hey, anne-marie, good morning. well, we're expecting to hear from more witnesses today one of which is the current minneapolis police chief who accused the former police officer of having a history of using excessive force. prosecutors did not mince words as they laid out their case against former police officer derek chauvin. >> i will tell you that you can believe your eyes that it's a homicide. it's murder. >> reporter: the trial's first day featured opening statements from both sides.

the prosecution played for the jury the cell phone video showing george floyd gasping for air. >> he put his knees upon his neck and his back, grinding and crushing him until the very breath. , ladies and gentlemen, until the very life were squeezed out of him. >> reporter: the defense offered a very different take on what happened. >> you'll learn that derek chauvin did exactly what he had been trained to do over the course of his 19-year career. >> reporter: defense attorney eric nelson said floyd's death was the result of drug abuse and underdrying heart condition. >> evidence is far greater than 9 minutes and 21 seconds. >> reporter: day one also included the trial's first witnesses, among them a 911 operator who watched floyd's arrest, who initially

thought it had frozen because the retrain had gone on so long. that dispatcher said she then called the police on the police. something she had never done before. >> my instincts were telling me that something was wrong. something was not right. i didn't know what, but something wasn't right. >> reporter: chauvin was charged with second degree murder as well as second degree manslaughter. he's pleaded not guilty. that trial is expected to pick back up this morning. lawyers on both sides making it abundantly clear to prove exactly how george floyd died will be crucial in this trial. anne-marie. >> all right. skyler henry in minneapolis. skyler, thank you so much. president biden is warning americans to not let down their guard as the number of new coronavirus cases increased in more than half the country. annod 90% of the country april and the white hous exp the number of pharmacies that can administer the vaccine. right now, 95 million people in the u.s. have received at least one dose. and more than 52 million are fully vaccinated.

that is nearly 16% of the total population. mola lenghi reports on the efforts to keep people safe. >> reporter: fourth wave fears. >> feeling i have an impending doom. >> reporter: as cases continue to rise nationwide, blunt words from the head of the cdc. >> so much reason for hope, but right now i'm scared so i'm speaking to you not necessarily as a cdc director, but as a wife, as a mother, as a daughter to ask you to hold on just a while longer. >> reporter: cases are up 10% with hospitalizations on the rise. as life looks more like it did prepandemic in much of the country. 43 states have allowed most or all businesses to reopen. and 17 don't have mask mandates. this as much of europe is seeing another spike. and doctors say paris hospitals are about to hit catastrophic overload. >> the trajectory of the pandemic in the united states

looks similar to many other countries in europe. i'm calling on our elected officials to sound the alarm. we must work together now to prevent a fourth surge. >> reporter: new jersey now seeing the nation's largest spike per capita. >> we have to push back against our pandemic fatigue. >> reporter: and florida seeing reported cases of the more contagious uk variant, more than doubling just in the past four days. but there is some good news. a new cdc of health care workers showing the pfizer and moderna vaccines are 95% effective after two doses. and 85% effective after just one. and that the vaccines can reduce asymptomatic infections. meanwhile as the death toll nears 450,000, the stunning admission from president trump's former pandemic coordinator. >> there were 100,000 deaths that came from the original surge.

all of the rest of them in my mind who have been mitigated or decreased substantially. >> that was mola lenghi reporting. new york state which was once the epicenter of the covid outbreak is expanding vaccine eligibility. starting today, anyone over the age of 30 can now get a shot. and people over the age of 16 can get a shot starting next tuesday. a public memorial service will be held today for the officer killed at a mass shooting at a colorado supermarket. family and friends gathered yesterday at a funeral to remember officer eric talley. the 51-year-old was first on the scene last monday after reports of an active shooter. the gunman killed the officer along with nine other people. talley's father said that his son will always be remembered as a hero. >> he was there to help people. and he was unselfish. if he's known for anything, it's for doing the right thing. because that's what he did by running in there. he did the right thing. >> talley was an 11-year-old veteran of the police force. he leaves behind a wife and seven children.

the container ship that got stuck in the suez canal is safely anchored this morning. experts are looking at the vessel for damage, but it was quite a celebration yesterday after tugboat crews helped free the vessel. ♪ >> the massive ship got stuck last tuesday, blown sideways in a sandstorm. the jam held up more than 370 ships carrying commodities from crude oil to cattle. experts believe it could take at least another ten days to clear up the entire backlog. so, coming up, another woman is accusing new york governor andrew cuomo of giving her an unwanted kiss. and rebranding volkswagen, may be ready to announce a name change. this is the "cbs morning news." change. this is the "cbs morning news."
