good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with emotionally charged testimony in the derek chauvin murder trial. the jury heard from several witnesses yesterday who saw the former minneapolis police officer kneeling on george floyd's neck. the panel also heard from the teenager who recorded the widely seen video of floyd's arrest before he died in police custody. skyler henry is in indianapolis. -- in minneapolis. who is expected to take the stand today? >> reporter: good morning, we'll pick back up with the off-duty minneapolis firefighter who was there watching as the scene unfolded between derek chauvin and george floyd. it comes after an emotional day two inside of the courtroom including compelling testimony from that teen who shot the video seen around the world. an off-duty firefighter testified in the derek chauvin trial that she wanted to help george floyd but insists a

police officer wouldn't let her. >> he said something along the lines of if you really are a minneapolis firefighter, you would know better than to get involved. >> reporter: genevieve hanson is expected to take the stand again. >> did call the police on the police -- >> why did you do that? >> because i believe i witnessed a murder. >> reporter: during his second day on the stand, donald williams listened as his 911 call was played for the jury. >> knee on the dude's neck -- >> reporter: the court heard from a teenager who recorded the widely seen video of floyd's arrest. darnella frazier's testimony was given off camera because of her age. >> i stayed up apologizing and -- and apologizing to george floyd for not doing more. >> reporter: during cross-examination, defense attorney eric nelson portrayed the witnesses as part of an increasingly hostile crowd. that made it difficult for

officers to concentrate on their job. >> it's fair to say that as you were there, you grew angrier. >> correct. you can't blame me i was angry. i was in a position where i had to be controlled. >> reporter: chauvin faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charge against him. so at some point we'll also hear from medical experts. the prosecution will call them to the stand. they are expected to testify as to why they feel as though chauvin's restraint is what led to george floyd's death. anne-marie? >> skyler henry in minneapolis. thank you so much. republican congressman matt gaetz is reportedly under investigation over a possible sexual relationship with a minor. "the new york times" first reported that the justice department is investigating whether he had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and paid for her to travel with him.

investigators want to determine whether gaetz violated federal sex trafficking laws. the probe was opened in the final months of the trump administration. 38-year-old gaetz is a close ally of mr. trump. he denied the allegations on fox news last night. >> it is a horrible allegation, and it is a lie. "the new york times" is running a story that i have traveled with a 17-year-old woman, and that is verifiably false. people can look at my travel records and see that that is not the case. >> gaetz claims that he's the victim of extortion involving a former justice department official seeking a $25 million payoff. more than 18,000 migrant children are in u.s. custody this morning, leading to severe overcrowding at housing facilities. reporters were allowed inside a crowded shelter in donna, texas, yesterday. it's designed to hold up to 250 people. right now it's holding more than 4,100 migrants, most of them

children who all sleep on the floor either with mats or foil blankets. >> i'm a father. i don't want to see that. as a border patrol agent, didn't sign up for this. >> reporter: are you worried that this will get worse? >> of course. of course i am. >> the government is opening nearly a dozen shelters with more than 16,000 beds, and it's considering additional sites. the biden administration is taking new steps to address attacks on asian americans. it is increasing coordination among federal agencies to respond to anti-asian bias and violence. it will appoint a white house official to review policies across the government affecting asians, hawaiians, and pacific islanders, and it will establish grants for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault who may struggle to get help because of language barriers. all this comes as we learn about the arrest of a man accused of attacking an asian woman in new york city. he's charged with felony assault

as a hate crime. a warning to you now. some of the video that we are about to show might be tough to watch. here's nancy chen. >> reporter: new video shows the violent attack on a 65-year-old asian american woman in new york. a man pushes the woman to the ground and repeatedly kicks her in broad daylight. from another angle, building staff members watched the attack. one closes the door, both now suspended. >> absolutely disgusting and outrageous video of an asian woman being attacked by someone full of hate. >> reporter: this just the latest in a string of violent attacks on asian americans across the country. more than 3,700 hate incidents reported since the start of the pandemic, leading to protesters rallying across the country demanding change. >> our community is feeling that fear, feeling that sense of dread about even going outside. and no american, no person should be made to feel that way. >> reporter: representative andy

kim tweeted about his 5-year-old son's experience with bullying writing that another kid called him chinese boy. "my son confused told the boy i'm a new jersey boy." >> i know that it's not the last time he's going to have this kind of encounter of racism. i want to find a way to prepare him. that's what i was trying to convey in that post is how do we talk about this, how do we share this, how do we prepare ourselves for this. >> reporter: the department of justice announcing expedited review of how these cases are handled, sending a memo to every employe. the attorney general is making this a top priority. nancy chen, cbs news, new york. now to the latest on the battle against the coronavirus. more than 96 million people in the u.s. have now received at least one vaccine dose. the number of new cases is still rising across the nation, though. 32 states have reported spikes in new infections. meantime, german health officials are restricting the use of astrazeneca's vaccine in people under 60 years of age

career. g. gordon liddy was 90 years old. a wildfire emergency has been declared in south dakota, and there was a final salute to a fallen officer. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the denver post" reports hundreds of people attended the funeral of boulder police officer eric talley. the 51-year-old was the first officer on the scene during last week's mass shooting at a colorado supermarket. he was killed along with nine other people. a procession of nearly 500 law enforcement vehicles was seen heading to yesterday's service. talley was remembered as a selfless and courageous officer with a fierce love for his family and community. >> your father was kind. your father died a hero. there is no doubt because of his bravery and quick action dozens of innocent lives were saved. >> talley leaves behind a wife and seven children.

the "rapid city journal" reports on the wildfires burning in south dakota. the largest, the schroeder fire, has burned more than three square miles, but firefighters said it was close to 50% contained. yesterday, strong winds hampered efforts to contain several wildfires burning in the black hills near rapid city. more than 400 homes have been evacuated, and mt. rushmore is closed. the governor declared a state of emergency until june. and "usa today" says a day after volkswagen said that it was changing its name to voltswagon, the company is calling it a joke. the german carmaker announced it was swapping the k to t to highlight its investment in electric vehicles. volkswagen posted a press release monday about the name change before it was removed. yesterday it said it was a premature april fool's joke to promote a new electric suv. still ahead, spacex test flight.

slightly higher open after a drop on wall street yesterday. moves in treasury yields yesterday put pressure again on stocks. the dow ultimately dropped 104 points, the nasdaq fell 14, and the s&p 500 lost 12. there is now a date for when people on social security will be getting their stimulus checks. the irs said those individuals can expect to receive their cash by next wednesday. in a statement, the irs and treasury department said they, quote, anticipate payments will begin to b be issued t this wee to s social secucurity recipipi. it also includes other federal beneficiaries. most americans are eligible for a $1,400 check under the latest covid relief deal. google maps is going green. the apple star directing drivers along routes estimated to produce the lowest emissions including road incline and traffic congestion. the default route will be the eco-friendly one if comparable options take about the same
