hall in for anne-marie green. we begin with the frantic effort in florida to prevent a potentially catastrophic toxic flood along the gulf coast. hundreds of residents remain under an evacuation order this morning as crews try to keep a large wastewater pond from collapsing. naomi ruchim joins us from new york. what's the latest? >> reporter: well, the fears over flooding have decreased somewhat. that's the good news. now there are concerns this situation could have dire environmental consequences, especially for wildlife. workers are scrambling to head off a potential disaster at a wastewater holding pond near tampa bay. >> a leak in the containment wall has been ongoing at the piney point facility over the past week. >> reporter: the 77-acre pond contains millions of gallons of toxic water from a phosphate plant that once occupied the site. the fear is that the leak might develop into a breach that would

flood the surrounding area. >> the greatest concern at the moment for human health and safety is the risk of uncontrolled discharge. >> reporter: engineers were unable to plug the leak, and the decision was made to evacuate nearby homes and businesses. >> i am happy to report that no news is good news. we have thankfully avoided uncontrolled breach that would have endangered people and property in the evacuation zone. >> reporter: florida governor ron desantis declared a state of emergency in three counties near the pond. >> what we're looking at now is trying to prevent and respond to if need be a real catastrophic flood situation. >> reporter: water is now being pumped out of the pond at a rate of about 22,000 gallons a minute. officials said it would take until tuesday to remove enough water to prevent a breach. local officials say the situation poses no risk to the

local water supply and drinking water. they claim this is part of a closed system. and the plan once this is all over, they say, is to try and close that facility permanently. diane? >> all right. naomi ruchim in new york. thank you. breaking overnight in st. louis, inmates at a jail staged a riot, smashing windows. [ cheers ] a local news crew captured the moment when dozens of inmates started causing damage. one person even threw a chair from a third-story window. some of the inmates demanded court dates. they're upset over a delay in court hearings because of the pandemic. the situation is now back under control. no guards were injured in the riot, but a few inmates were possibly hurt. there was an uprising in the same jail in february. the trial of the former minneapolis police officer charged with killing george floyd is set to resume today. the first week of derek

chauvin's trial was marked by emotional accounts from people who watched chauvin press his knee against floyd's neck last may for more than nine minutes. prosecutors also showed hours of video of the arrest from different angles. yesterday floyd was honored during easter sunday services that were held just feet from where he died. travelers hit the skies this holiday weekend in record numbers. the tsa screened more than 1.5 million people on friday. that's the highest number in more than a year. it came on the same day that the cdc announced fully vaccinated americans can travel at low risk to themselves. the agency still urges passengers to wear masks and social distance when possible. meantime, it was the second easter disrupted by the pandemic. the amount of coronavirus cases is still rising in at least 27 states. this as the number of fully vaccinated americans continues to grow. more than 61 million people have received both doses. that's more than 18% of the total u.s. population. lilia luciano is tracking the

the mlb commissioner said, quote, major league baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all americans and opposes restrictions to the ballot box. fair access to voting continues to have our games' unwavering support. supporters of the decision to move the game from atlanta's park say the new law makes it harder for people of color to vote. critics say the decision will hurt working people in the state and have long-term economic consequences. >> in the middle of a pandemic, major league baseball put the wishes of stacy abrams and joe biden ahead of well-being of hard-working georgians who were counting on a paycheck. >> governor kemp said major league baseball caved to what he called political pressure. ahead, we'll talk with the atlanta mayor. she'll discuss the league's decision to move the all-star game out of her city and the impact it will have on the local economy.
