d.c., today. president biden will unveil a series of executive actions to curb gun violence after a string of mass shootings here in the u.s. naomi ruchim is in new york. what can we expect? >> reporter: well, this will be the president's first major action on gun control since taking office, and it comes at a time when there have been several mass shootings in this country just within the last month. he is facing mounting pressure even as many republicans oppose the plans. most of president biden's actions tackle relatively minor issues like a revision of the federal government's definition of firearm. >> no one is talking about overturning or changing the second amendment. >> reporter: another targets so-called ghost guns -- weapons assembled from kits that have no serial numbers. the president will reportedly order the justice department to try to limit their availability. recent mass shootings in georgia

and colorado have renewed calls for action by advocacy groups. last month president biden called on congress to restore the federal assault weapon ban that expired in 2004. >> it was law for the longest time, and it brought down these mass killings. >> reporter: senate democrats are promising action, but it's unclear if any republicans will join them. >> this senate will be different. the senate is going to debate and address the epidemic of gun violence in this country. >> i'm certainly open to the discussion. what i'm not attracted to is something that doesn't work. >> reporter: president biden is expected to name david chipman to head the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and explosives. he's a former atf agent who has long been an advocate of stronger gun-control laws. and congress has not approved a nomination of an atf director since 2013. for many years there have been acting directors one after the next.

so if this approval goes through, it would be a big deal, diane. in the meantime, while many of these actions can be enforced through executive action, congress wilneedl o support another bunch of them to actually be enforced. diane? >> naomi ruchim in new york. thank you. as new covid cases spike again around the nation, the cdc says the most contagious variant first seen in the uk is now in the most common strain in america. the agency also says hospitals are seeing more adults in their 30s and 40s admitted with severe cases of covid. the director of the cdc is urging americans to stay vigilant against the virus. >> there is still reason for us to be concerned with rising case counts, rising variants reported, and increasing hospitalization. >> dr. walensky also highlighted reports of clusters of cases across the nation linked to day care centers and youth sports. the makers of the three vaccines currently approved for emergency use in the u.s. are

now testing them in kids. developing this morning, allegations of child abuse and neglect at a migrant holding facility in texas. child welfare officials say they have received three reports coming from the freeman coliseum in san antonio. it's housing more than 1,600 teens who crossed the southern border. texas governor abbott wants the building shut down. the white house says federal health officials will look into the claims. meantime, more than 20,000 unaccompanied minors are in u.s. custody this morning. some come all the way from central america where a climate change may have worsened desperate conditions. manuel bojorquez has more from guatemala. >> reporter: so this would be full of leaves, this is the coffee bean -- no good. these crops were the family's livelihood. he's one of many farmers in the guatemalan highlands devastated by back-to-back hurricanes last fall that barrelled through the region with intensity and rainfall believed to be magnified by climate change.

place. a bank loan for a farmer's dream, now another sign entices him -- a smuggler advertising a trip to the u.s. no money to go, but your thoughts are maybe to head north. it would mean another debt of thousands of dollars and leaving behind his wife and 5-year-old son. manuel bojorquez, cbs news. more witnesses are expected to take the stand today in the trial of derek chauvin. a former minneapolis police officer accused of killing george floyd. yesterday there was a dispute over what floyd said to police about drugs while he was handcuffed last may. prosecutors say floyd's comments are open to interpretation. cbs news legal expert and analyst rikki klieman says it's important for prosecutors to play it straight when it comes to floyd's drug use. >> the prosecution has to come across to the jury as the total

giver of truth. if you know it's going to come out and you know it's really bad for you and you're the prosecution, put it in. >> the defense has argued that drugs and underlying health conditions led to floyd's death while he was in police custody. police are blaming excessive speed and loss of control in the crash that badly injured tiger woods. the los angeles county sheriff's office said the golfer was going up to 87 miles per hour, almost double the speed limit. his car hit a tree and rolled several times off a road near los angeles back in february. there was no evidence woods tried to brake. woods will not be cited or face charges. he is still recovering from his injuries. coming up, celebrity zookeeper jack hannah is stepping back from public life after a dementia diagnosis. and a surprise play -- basketball star shaquille o'neal is caught on video carrying out a generous act. this is the "cbs morning news." act. this is the "cbs morning news."

three, two, one, zero. ignition, and liftoff. >> a spacex falcon 9 rocket blasted off from florida carrying 60 more of its star link internet satellites into orbit. the company has launched more than 1,200 satellites so far. a few minutes after the launch the first stage landed back on a drone ship. rudy giuliani's son is considering a political run, and a sad diagnosis for jack hannah. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "columbus dispatch" reports celebrity zookeeper jack hannah has dementia. hannah's family made the announcement yesterday. they said the 74-year-old director emeritus of the columbus zoo zoo will retire from public life. they added his condition has grown worse in the last few months, and it's believed hannah

now has alzheimer's disease. hannah is known for his own tv shows and for his appearances on talk shows hosted by johnny carson and david letterman. "the new york times" reports andrew giuliani, son of former new york city mayor rudy giuliani, says he is considering a run for governor of new york. the 35-year-old has never held political office before. he says he might run as a republican. new york's current governor, democrat andrew cuomo, is expected to run for a fourth term. cuomo is the subject of several investigations including alleged sexual harassment and his handling of state nursing homes during the pandemic. and espn reports the chairman of the augusta national golf club and the masters tournament says he is against a boycott over georgia's controversial new voting law. yesterday during his annual pretournament news conference, brad ridley said, quote, the right to vote is fundamental in our democratic society. critics of the law say it will make it harder for people of color to vote. major league baseball moved its

nike is suspending its endorsement contract with football star deshaun watson. beats by dre is also reportedly ending its sponsorship of the houston texans quarterback. he's been accused of sexual misconduct in lawsuits filed by 22 women. in a statement yesterday, nike said it is, quote, deeply concerned by the allegations. the nfl has launched an investigation into watson who has publicly denied any wrongdoing. on the cbs "money watch," amazon workers in alabama vote on whether to unionize, and best buy is testing a new membership program. elise preston is in new york with that and more. good morning, elise. >> reporter: good morning, diane. the labor department today is set to release its weekly report on new jobless claims. meantime, stock futures are indicating a mostly higher open after three of the major indices hugged the flat line during yesterday's session. the dow added 16 points, hovering near record levels. the nasdaq shed nine points, and

the s&p 500 gained six points, also nearing a record. the public tally is expected to begin as early as this afternoon in amazon's high-stakes union election. more than 5,800 amazon workers were eligible to vote on whether to join the union and have their warehouse be the first amazon facility ever to unionize in the nation. voter turnout is about 55%. organizers want higher pay for warehouse workers, along with more break time. target will spend more than $2 billion at black-owned businesses by 2025 as part of its effort to advance racial equality. the retailer plans to add a broad spectrum of products from more than 500 black-owned businesses and will hire black-owned construction and marketing firms. the company is also launching a new program called forward founders that helps entrepreneurs. and best buy is taking aim at amazon prime with its own membership program.
