d.c., today. president biden will unveil a series of executive actions to curb gun violence after a string of mass shootings here in the u.s. naomi ruchim is in new york. what can we expect? >> reporter: well, this will be the president's first major action on gun control since taking office, and it comes at a time when there have been several mass shootings in this country just within the last month. he is facing mounting pressure even as many republicans oppose the plans. most of president biden's actions tackle relatively minor issues like a revision of the federal government's definition of firearm. >> no one is talking about overturning or changing the second amendment. >> reporter: another targets so-called ghost guns -- weapons assembled from kits that have no serial numbers. the president will reportedly order the justice department to try to limit their availability. recent mass shootings in georgia

and colorado have renewed calls for action by advocacy groups. last month president biden called on congress to restore the federal assault weapon ban that expired in 2004. >> it was law for the longest time, and it brought down these mass killings. >> reporter: senate democrats are promising action, but it's unclear if any republicans will join them. >> this senate will be different. the senate is going to debate and address the epidemic of gun violence in this country. >> i'm certainly open to the discussion. what i'm not attracted to is something that doesn't work. >> reporter: president biden is expected to name david chipman to head the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and explosives. he's a former atf agent who has long been an advocate of stronger gun-control laws. and congress has not approved a nomination of an atf director since 2013. for many years there have been acting directors one after the next.

so if this approval goes through, it would be a big deal, diane. in the meantime, while many of these actions can be enforced through executive action, congress wilneedl o support another bunch of them to actually be enforced. diane? >> naomi ruchim in new york. thank you. as new covid cases spike again around the nation, the cdc says the most contagious variant first seen in the uk is now in the most common strain in america. the agency also says hospitals are seeing more adults in their 30s and 40s admitted with severe cases of covid. the director of the cdc is urging americans to stay vigilant against the virus. >> there is still reason for us to be concerned with rising case counts, rising variants reported, and increasing hospitalization. >> dr. walensky also highlighted reports of clusters of cases across the nation linked to day care centers and youth sports. the makers of the three vaccines currently approved for emergency use in the u.s. are

now testing them in kids. developing this morning, allegations of child abuse and neglect at a migrant holding facility in texas. child welfare officials say they have received three reports coming from the freeman coliseum in san antonio. it's housing more than 1,600 teens who crossed the southern border. texas governor abbott wants the building shut down. the white house says federal health officials will look into the claims. meantime, more than 20,000 unaccompanied minors are in u.s. custody this morning. some come all the way from central america where a climate change may have worsened desperate conditions. manuel bojorquez has more from guatemala. >> reporter: so this would be full of leaves, this is the coffee bean -- no good. these crops were the family's livelihood. he's one of many farmers in the guatemalan highlands devastated by back-to-back hurricanes last fall that barrelled through the region with intensity and rainfall believed to be magnified by climate change.

place. a bank loan for a farmer's dream, now another sign entices him -- a smuggler advertising a trip to the u.s. no money to go, but your thoughts are maybe to head north. it would mean another debt of thousands of dollars and leaving behind his wife and 5-year-old son. manuel bojorquez, cbs news. more witnesses are expected to take the stand today in the trial of derek chauvin. a former minneapolis police officer accused of killing george floyd. yesterday there was a dispute over what floyd said to police about drugs while he was handcuffed last may. prosecutors say floyd's comments are open to interpretation. cbs news legal expert and analyst rikki klieman says it's important for prosecutors to play it straight when it comes to floyd's drug use. >> the prosecution has to come across to the jury as the total
