good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with a milestone in the battle against the coronavirus. on saturday 4.6 million doses of the vaccine were administered. a daily record. and the number of americans fully vaccinated is now more than 72 million, that is more than 21% of the total u.s. population. michigan governor gretchen whitmer is pushing the white house to send more doses to her state which is seeing the highest rate of new infections in the u.s. laura podesta is in new york. what is the white house's response? >> reporter: good morning. well, the white house has agreed to send more vaccinators to michigan to help with the surge there, but no more vaccine doses. health experts say any states that may have extra doses should volunteer them. more than one in five americans are fully vaccinated against covid-19. >> you made my day.

>> reporter: nearly 80% of people 65 and older have had at least one dose. >> i just think it's better for all of us to get on with our lives. >> reporter: many places are doing just that with some schools in los angeles reopening this week. >> once i stepped into my classroom yesterday, i didn't realize how much i missed it. >> reporter: over the weekend, utah became the 12th state to lift its mask mandate. >> answer to prayers. >> reporter: while some celebrate, others, like sunny freeman, proceed with caution. >> i still have some fears about us becoming really lax and the new strand of covid being spread faster. >> reporter: in the upper midwest, governor gretchen whitman is pleading with the white house for more vaccines to stop a variant surge. >> what's happening in michigan today could be what's happening in other states tomorrow. >> reporter: a speed bump, america's supply of the johnson & johnson vaccine will plunge 86% this week because of the contamination issue at a production plant.

>> there's that race -- vaccine versus the virus. and right now in many parts of the country, the virus appears to be winning. >> reporter: the former fda commissioner is confident the nation's supply will outstrip demand. >> i think a lot of states are going to see excess supply and excess appointments. >> reporter: the u.s. is averaging more than three million shots per day. new hampshire leads as the state to administer the highest percentage of vaccines it's received just north of 90%. that's according to the cdc's latest data tracker. >> wow. laura podesta, thank you so much. so breaking overnight in minnesota, protests broke out near the scene of derek chauvin's murder trial. this time over the police shooting of a black man on sunday during a traffic stop that left the man dead. officers used flash bangs to clear protesters away from the police station in brooklyn center, minnesota. demonstrators tore down crime

scene tape and demanded answers into duante wright's death. >> what do we want? >> justice! [ chants ] >> demonstrators faced off with police earlier in the evening yesterday. in a statement, authorities said that they pulled over a man yesterday for an outstanding warrant. when they tried to arrest him, the individual got back into his car, and that's when an officer fired at him. the man drove for several blocks before striking another vehicle. he was pronounced dead at the scene. an investigation is ongoing. the prosecution is expected to wrap up its case this week in the trial of derek chauvin. the former minneapolis police officer charged in george floyd's death. on friday the medical examiner who performed the autopsy on floyd testified while heart disease and drugs played a role it was the interaction with police that caused floyd's death. this week jurors will hear from at least one member of floyd's family and a use of force expert.

congress returns from recess today for a busy spring season. one of the biggest issues on the table right now -- the president's infrastructure plan. mr. biden meets today with the bipartisan group of lawmakers to discuss the plan. yesterday he tweeted, "it's time we invest in the future of america again." his vision faces roadblocks, christina ruffini explains. we can agree to disagree -- >> reporter: the transportation secretary said the broad scope of the president's infrastructure proposal is exactly what the country needs. >> to me it makes no sense to say i would have been for broadband but i'm against it because it's not a bridge. >> reporter: the more than $2 trillion plan includes funding to modernize roads and buttress bridges, as well as billions for expanded broadband internet access, affordable housing, and repairs to public schools. >> it's physical infrastructure, it's also human infrastructure that is involved. >> reporter: appearing on "face the nation," house speaker nancy

pelosi said democrats will not scale back the bill to gain bipartisan support. >> hopefully the need is so obvious now that republicans will vote for it. >> reporter: republican representative liz cheney says she will not. >> look, the bill would need to be fundamentally redone. it would need to be a different bill. >> reporter: cheney, one of only ten house republicans who voted to impeach former president trump after the capitol riot, was also asked about his latest comments to republican donors in florida, calling senator mitch mcconnell a total stone-cold loser and reiterating baseless claims about the 2020 election. >> the former president is using the same language that he knows provoked violence on january 6th. we need to be focused on embracing the constitution, not embracing insurrection. >> reporter: christina ruffini, cbs news, the white house. the governor of virginia is calling for an investigation after a police body camera video shows two officers pepper spraying and pointing their guns

at a black army officer during a traffic stop. >> what's going on? >> what's going on is you're -- >> i'm actively serving this country, and this is how you're going to treat me? >> back up -- >> i didn't do anything -- hold on. >> this happened in december, but second lieutenant caron nazario filed a lawsuit this month. a police report said he was pulled over in his uniform for not having tags displayed, but he had a temporary dealer plate on the back windshield. he's seeking $1 million in damages claiming that his first and fourth amendment rights were violated. >> what prompted him to file is the need to stop this conduct, the need to hold these two officers accountable and make sure they cannot do it again. >> one of the officers has since been fired. nazario is not facing charges

only a at panera.. more people are evacuating their homes on the caribbean island of st. vincent as a volcano continues to rumble. the volcano started spewing ash six miles into the air on friday. some buildings were covered with it. the ash even fell on barbados, about 120 miles away. about 16,000 people have evacuated their homes on st. vincent. there are no reports of deaths or injuries. scientists say the eruption could continue for some time, though. the first japanese player wins the masters golf tournament, and a congressman is recovering from eye surgery. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "dallas morning news" reports representative dan crenshaw of texas says he will be virtually blind for a month after emergency eye surgery. the former navy s.e.a.l. lost his right eye when a bomb exploded when he was serving in afghanistan in 2012.

he also sustained damage to his left eye at the time. on friday, he had surgery on that same left eye after he was diagnosed with a detached retina. crenshaw says that the surgery went well. and the "atlanta journal constitution" says japanese golfer hideki matsuyama made history at the masters tournament. [ applause ] that's the final putt at the 18th hole yesterday to win by one stroke. he's the first japanese man to ever win the masters or any major golf tournament. he talked about that with the help of an interpreter. >> translator: i can't say i'm the greatest, however i'm the first to win a major. if that's the bar then i set it. >> his victory at the age of 29 comes ten years after he was the

discuss state voting laws, and disneyland starts taking some reservations today. naomi ruchim is in new york with that and more. good morning, naomi. >> reporter: good morning to you. investors will keep an eye on a flood of corporate earnings results and economic data set for release this week. it comes as stocks had a record-setting rally on friday. the dow surged 297 points. the nasdaq gained 70 points, and the s&p 500 added 31 points. more than 100 business leaders met virtually on saturday for a first of its kind meeting discussing nonpartisan action against restrictive voting law proposals. the call includes leaders from the health care, media, retail, and transportation sectors. the ceos said they'll re-evaluate donations to candidates supporting restrictions on voter access. the meeting comes after georgia passed a controversial voting law. amazon workers in alabama voted against forming a union at
