developments in minneapolis, in a suburb there where there was a second night of protests following the deadly police shooting of daunte wright. demonstrators clashed with police in brooklyn center last night. officers blasted tear gas to break up large crowds of people who violated a curfew. they arrested about 40 people. a couple of officers also suffered minor injuries. protesters want justice for wright, a black man shot and killed during a traffic stop on sunday. body cam footage shows an officer who police say mistakenly grabbed her gun instead of a taser. laura podesta has been tracking the latest developments. from new york city for us. laura. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. well, there were rallies here as well. and they remain peaceful, and wright's family asks that protests nationwide remain calm. protesters and police faced off for a second night in minnesota

last night. >> are y'all going to kill me, too? >> reporter: tear gas was fired as people stayed out past a 7:00 p.m. curfew, calling for justice after the death of daunte wright. the 20-year-old was killed during a traffic stop on sunday. body camera footage shows officers attempting to handcuff wright when he got back in his car. [ bleep ]. >> it's my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their taser but instead, shot mr. wright with a single bullet. >> reporter: officer kim potter, a 26-year veteran of the force fired the fatal shot, she's been placed on leave pending an investigation. >> my heart is literally broken into 1,000 pieces. >> reporter: katie wright is daunte's mother. >> he was my life. he was my son and i can never get that back. because of a mistake. >> reporter: china whitaker is the mother of wright's 1 1/2 son daunte jr.

>> it's not fair that his son cannot have his dad. >> reporter: wright's death comes less than 11 months after george floyd's which sparked days of protests in the minneapolis area. >> second time we had windows broken. >> reporter: portland's business is one of several vandalized sunday night. wright's mother urged protesters to remain peaceful. and the white house is echoing that request saying there is no excuse for violence or looting. meanwhile, anne-marie, as you know, the derek chauvin trial is happening in minneapolis, yesterday, the defense asked that the jurors be sequestered so that their opinions would not be influenced with these ongoing protests, but a judge denied that request. anne-marie. >> laura podesta in new york, thank you, laura.

ahead on "cbs this morning," brooklyn city mayor mike elliott joins to us discuss the deadly shooting and the next steps into the investigation including why he says the officer who shot daunte wright should be fired. the defense team for derek chauvin is expected to start calling witnesses today. the former minneapolis cop was charged with killing george floyd. yesterday, there was emotional testimony with floyd's brother, jamie yuccas is following the trial in minneapolis. >> that's my mother, with my older brother george. i miss both of them. >> reporter: heartbreaking testimony from george floyd's younger brother philonise, he talked about george growing up in houston and his close relationship with their mother. >> he would always be up on our mom. he was a big mama's boy. he loved her so dearly. >> reporter: he said their mother died before george had a chance to say good-bye in person. the last time george saw his mother alive was at her funeral

in 2018. >> george sat there at the casket and would say mama, mama, over and over again. he was a pity the entire time. >> reporter: earlier on the stand, cardiologist jonathan rich echoed the testimony of previous expert witnesses. >> i believe that mr. george floyd's death was absolutely preventible. >> reporter: he said floyd's heart stopped due to low oxygen levels caused by the officer's actions. >> i can state with a high degree of medical certainty that george floyd did not die from a cardiac event and he did not die of a drug overdose. >> reporter: but the defense tried to keep drugs. meth was found in his system. >> what is a safe dose of methamphetamine? >> prescribed? >> illicit. >> i would never consider any illicit drug off the street to

not prescribed by a physician not to be safe. >> reporter: that's not the george floyd his brother remembers. >> he just knew how to make people feel better. >> reporter: jamie yuccas, cbs news, minneapolis. a knoxville tennessee high school will be closed today after police shot and killed a student who opened fire on them at the school. the incident unfolded yesterday at austin east magnate high school. authoritied responded to a report of a possible gunman. they say the suspect was found in a bathroom and refused to come out, that's when the student reportedly opened fire and police fired back. the student died at the school. an officer was shot in the leg and is expected to recover. a motive is unclear, though. turning now to the coronavirus. the cdc is urging the state of michigan to shut down to control the country's worst outbreak. the agency's director rochelle walensky is pushing back on calls for additional vaccines to be sent to michigan because she says the doses would take weeks to assure protection. she said the best solution right now is to order a lockdown.

two months after a crash that critically injured a 5-year-old girl. the son of andy reid faces up to seven years in prison if convicted. prosecutors say britt reid's blood level was above the legal limit. they also say he was traveling nearly 20 miles over the speed limit when his truck crashed into two cars stopped on a highway entrance ramp near arrowhead stadium. the little girl suffered traumatic brain injuries. "the washington post" said president biden plans to nominate christine wormuth to be the next secretary of the army. if confirmed by the senate she would be the first woman to lead the arm. wormuth served in several positions in the obama administration. she currently works for the funded think tank the rand corporation. and our news station said lin-manuel miranda helped open a new covid vaccination site. for members of the broadway film and television industries. the creator and star of the

our top stories this morning, there was a second night of protests in a minneapolis suburb following the deadly police shooting of daunte wright. about 40 people were arrested. authorities say officer kim potter accidentally used her gun instead of a taser on wright during a traffic stop. she has been placed on leave. and derek chauvin's defense team is expected to call witnesses today in his murder trial. jurors yesterday heard emotional testimony from george floyd's brother. a cardiologist also testified that floyd's heart stopped due to low oxygen levels from the way he was held down by police.

there's been an increase in phishing scams during the pandemic. con artists have been sending out emails and texts hoping to reel in victims. nancy chen shows a new scam targeting people who are already down on their luck. >> reporter: the pandemic led to job losses and people signing up for unemployment benefits online. something con artists have keyed in on. >> how successful have these scammers been? >> these scammers have been very successful. unemployment fraud is happening across the country in every state. >> reporter: steve ragan is with akamai technologies. and has created a website that looks like the real thing. it's since been taken down. ragan created this one to show us how it worked. scam artists send a text or email directing to their website. after a user name and pass word entered, the fake site asks for their mother's maiden name and

pin number. once the information is entered users are sent to the real page. >> do people who enter their personal information on the fake sites even realize they've been scammed? >> no, they don't. by the time the scam is over it forwarded to the real domain and you'll never notice. >> reporter: but the scam artist now has the info and can log on as the unexpected victim, and get more information. >> everything that a criminal would need to commit fraud using your identity. >> reporter: last year, almost 250,000 complaints of phishing scams. with people losing about $54 million. >> if you do fall for one of these phishing scams, the consequences can be pretty severe. >> reporter: the cbs expert said people can sell it on did the dark web. >> think twice before you click. on anything in your email or text messages. >> reporter: one way to find a fake site is to double-check on the url. for example, this looks like a legitimate google site but it's not because of the dot
