good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with a safety review of the johnson & johnson coronavirus vaccine. the vaccine is currently on pause after six women in the u.s. developed rare blood clotting issues. one of them died. another is in critical condition. now the pause is expected to last only a few days. today the cdc will meet to discuss the next steps and when the single-shot dose can resume. debra alfarone is tracking the latest. >> reporter: all 50 states have suspended their use of johnson & johnson's covid-19 vaccine. federal health officials recommended the move after six women developed blood clots after getting the shot. >> this is a recommendation, and it's not a mandate. it's out of an abundance of caution. >> reporter: the johnson & johnson vaccine first became available in early march. it has since been administered to roughly seven million people. a fact emphasized by experts like dr. anthony fauci. >> there have been six out of

the 6.85 million doses which is less than one in a million. >> reporter: the blood clots also occurred in women between the ages of 18 and 48. their symptoms began six to 13 days after they got the shot. one woman died. another is in critical condition. the cdc will hold an emergency meeting to discuss the blood clotting cases. they're expecting to vote on whether the issue is significant enough for the pause to continue. the johnson & johnson vaccine pause is not expected to have a significant impact on the national immunization effort. >> we have more than enough supply of pfizer and moderna vaccines to continue the current pace of about three million shots per day. >> reporter: the rest of the world is facing a more serious setback. many nations have been counting on johnson & johnson's single-dose vaccine, and the company had promised to produce enough to vaccinate a billion people by the end of the year.

debra alfarone, silver spring, maryland. ahead on "cbs this morning" we will talk with the u.s. surgeon general on how the j&j pause may affect vaccine hesitancy. the minnesota police officer who shot and killed duante wright during a traffic stop will find out whether she'll face criminal charges. officer kim parter, a 26-year veteran, resigned yesterday. the police chief, tim gannon also announced he's stepping down. on monday, gannon released video of the shooting saying potter accidentally grabbed her gun instead of a taser. skyler henry is in minneapolis. so this comes as protesters clash with police for a third straight night. >> reporter: hey, good morning. that's right. law enforcement made several arrests last night after officials say that members of the crowd threw bottles and bricks and even attempted to spray mace at some of the

officers in brooklyn center after a third night of protests calling for justice in the death of 20-year-old duante wright. curfews are still in effect for several cities in the minneapolis metro area as the twin cities pay attention to not only what happens in brooklyn center but in minneapolis, and the latest in the trial against derek chauvin. april snow and a heavy police presence didn't stop protesters in brooklyn park, minnesota, on tuesday. police say these bricks, cans, and other objects were thrown at them last night. >> as the evening unfolded, the event devolved. >> reporter: earlier in the day, peaceful protesters marched through the streets calling for justice in the death of 20-year-old duante wright who died during a traffic stop sunday when officer kim potter mistakenly mistook her pistol for a taser. the 26-year veteran resigned yesterday. >> the person is no longer a

police officer. they'll be held accountable for their actions. >> reporter: potter said she believed her resignation was in the best interests of the community. the washington county district attorney may decide today if any criminal charges will be filed against her. >> this mom is grieving -- >> reporter: the family of george floyd offered its support to wright's family as they followed the murder trial of derek chauvin. >> we will fight for justice for this family just like we're fighting for our brother. >> reporter: yesterday a use of force expert testified for the defense that chauvin's actions were justified. >> in your opinion, was this a use of deadly force? >> it was not. police officers don't have to fight fair. they're allowed to overcome your resistance. >> reporter: the prosecution pushed back. >> what part of this is not compliant? >> you know, a compliant person would have both their hands in the small of their back and be resting comfortably versus like he's still moving around. >> did you say resting comfortably? >> reporter: the defense has not said if chauvin will testify. now whether chauvin takes the

stand remains to be seen, but it could open him up for cross-examination. now legal experts say that the opportunity would potentially allow chauvin to express some remorse or sympathy for the actions of that day. now the judge overseeing this case says that he expects the defense to wrap up its arguments by the end of the week. anne-marie? >> skyler henry in minnesota, thank you very much. president biden today is expected to formally announce the withdrawal of all u.s. troops from afghanistan, ending america's longest war. he's expected to lay out plans for the remaining 2,500 troops to leave by september 11th. the 20th anniversary of the terror attacks on america. mr. biden's decision defies a may 1st deadline for full withdrawal under a peace agreement that the trump administration reached with the taliban last year. meantime, president biden is set to address a joint session of congress for the first time on april 28th.

the night before his 100th day in office. he accepted the invitation last night from speaker of the house nancy pelosi. the speech will give mr. biden a chance to update americans on his agenda, including his massive $2 trillion infrastructure plan. there was an emotional ceremony honoring veteran capitol police officer billy evans who was killed in the line of duty. fellow officers, congressional leaders, and evans' family watched as his casket left the u.s. capitol yesterday. the procession passed by the security barricade where a man in a car ran down evan on good friday. the 41-year-old laid an honor at -- laid in honor at the capitol rotunda for the memorial, and his two children clung to their mom during the ceremony. president biden spoke directly to the fallen officer's family. >> losing a son, daughter, brother, sister, mom, dad, is like losing a piece of your soul. but it's buried deep, but it comes back.

on the "morning newsstand." the "los angeles times" reports a longtime suspect in the 1996 disappearance of a california college student is now under arrest. 44-year-old paul flores was taken into custody yesterday on suspension of murdering 19-year-old kristin smart. flores' 80-year-old father was also arrested for allegedly helping his son dispose of smart's remains. her body was never found. flores was the last person seen with smart on the campus of cal poly san luis obispo university before she vanished. now the sheriff said that this is the first step toward justice for the smart family. >> we have committed to them that we are not going to stop until kristin has been recovered no matter what the cost, no matter what the time. we're committed to that, and i know they believe in us. i know they believe that we will -- we will find kristin. >> the sheriff said arrest

warrants were issued after a search of flores' father's home last month turned up new evidence. a podcast also produced new witnesses. and "the washington post" says an associate of florida republican representative matt gaetz is said to be cooperating with prosecutors in a an investigation. according to a person familiar with the matter, tax collector joel greenberg has been providing information about how he and gaetz would pay women for sex using cash or gifts. that is a potential violation of federal trafficking laws. greenberg is reportedly seeking a plea deal after being charged with multiple crimes including sex trafficking of a child. gaetz has denied he paid women for sex. still ahead, disney updates its dress code for workers. why you might see more tattoos on cast members during your next visit to a theme park.

the nasdaq rallied 146, and the s&p 500 added 13 points. cracking down on baby food. the fda plans to propose limits on arsenic, lead, and mercury in baby food. the move comes after a congressional report found some infant foods are tainted with toxic heavy metals. the agency says it realizes americans want zero toxic elements in the food but said these elements occur in our air, water, and soil. right now the government does not regulate most toxic metals in infant and baby food. americans are buying less toilet paper, disinfecting wipes, and paper towels. sales have fallen to 32% in past three months compared to the same time last year. the market researcher found sales of household and cleaning products remains higher than they were before the pandemic hit. overall, it found consumers are buying at a more normal pace instead of hoarding, allowing suppliers to keep up with demand. and taco bell today is opening a futuristic restaurant in the big apple.
