good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning, closing arguments and jury deliberations are expected to begin today in derek chauvin's murder trial. last week the defense wrapped up after the former minneapolis police officer said he would not testify. he's facing several charges in george floyd's death and could get up to 40 years in prison. skylercour in milis. with the case today? >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. much like other parts of the country, businesses here in minneapolis have begun boarding up anticipating any potential fallout. meanwhile, inside of the courtroom, once closing arguments are over, instructions submitted by both sides and approved by the judge will be given to the jury. then they'll begin deliberating. after three weeks and 45

boarded up in anticipation of unrest. this artist painted some as a way to relieve her tension. >> i think that energy really transfers from me into the a piece and other people can feel that, too, when they see it. >> reporter: chauvin is facing up to 40 years in prison if convicted. the most serious charge, second-degree murder. last thursday, the judge told the jury as they began to pack to prepare for long, plan for long, but hope for short as it comes to these deliberations. anne-marie? >> indeed. skyler henry in minneapolis. thank you so much. the former employee who shot and killed eight people at a fedex facility legally bought two rifles just months after being investigated by the fbi. brandon scott hole purchased the firearms last july and september. the 19-year-old was under investigation early in march after his mother called police saying hole could commit suicide by cop. police seized a shotgun from his home.

police say the teenager shot and killed eight people at the fedex facility late thursday before killing himself. authorities have not announced a possible motive. four of the shooting victims were from the sikh community. family and friends gathered to remember the victims at vigils over the weekend. some are demanding state and local politicians take immediate gun-control action. an intense manhunt is under way in texas for a former sheriff's deputy wanted in a deadly shooting. three people were killed outside an apartment building in austin yesterday morning. authorities say the victims knew the shooter, and the incident is isolated. the suspect has been identified as 41-year-old steven nicholas broderick. he's considered armed and dangerous. it's unclear if he fled on foot or in a car. residents are told to remain vigilant. in wisconsin, police have arrested a suspect in a shooting that left three people dead at a bar.idt early

yesterday morning in kenosha. police say that they believe the suspect was asked to leave and then came back and opened fire both inside and outside the bar. authorities say it's unclear if. to the latest now on the battle against the coronavirus. starting today every adult across the nation is eligible to get a covid shot. so far more than 209 million doses have been administered. meantime, we could find out friday whether the johnson & johnson vaccine can return to arms. it was put on hold in the u.s. after reports of rare blood clots. lilia luciano explains. >> reporter: eager angelenos lined up at a supersite for a shot of relief. half of all american adults have gotten at least one dose. >> i feel like it's important to get vaccinated. to help simmer down the virus. >> reporter: adding to the anxiety, the johnson & johnson vaccine paused following six

"the washington post" reports a doctor for alexei navalny says that he could die at any moment. president putin is on the third week of a hunger strike. he's protesting authorities' refusal to let his personal doctor visit him since he started having severe back pain and a loss of feeling in his legs. one doctor said test results he received from navalny's family revealed his condition. navalny's supporters are calling for massive protests on wednesday. our portland, oregon, five -- affiliate says koin as mask mandates end around the country, oregon is bucking the trend. a health official says he is iridskand social distancing in all businesses. current oregon restrictions end may 4th. the official says that the move is necessary to keep those rules from expiring. nearly 60,000 people have signed a petition against the proposal.

"the new york times" says a north carolina man came to the aid of his wife when she was attacked by a bobcat. security video shows the woman being attacked earlier this month as she was carrying the family's cat in a carrier. the bobcat scratched and bit her and crawled up her back. her husband pulled the wild animal off, held it up, and threw it to the ground. he was also bitten and scratched. >> i kind of shoved my arm in there, that's why i ended up with it face to face, and it's not really until i get it a few steps away that i look at it and realize it's a bobcat. i say, oh, my god, it's a bobcat. >> when the animal charged again, the man shot it. the couple received 30 shots each to treat rabies after the ine. rulators are ercise n war telling people with children or pets to stop using a popular treadmill. treadmill. i thought i was getting my floors clean. and then i learned my mop could be loaded with bacteria.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ not what you expect to see at a family fun air show. this terrifying scene happened in florida. a pilot was forced to crash land his world war ii-era plane in the ocean at cocoa beach on saturday just feet from onlookers. officials say a mechanical glitch prompted the heart-pounding incident. luckily the pilot was pulled to safety, and no one else was hurt. the faa and the ntsb are investigating. on the cbs "money watch" now, there's a new safety warning about a peloton machine, and toyota is rolling out full electric vehicles. diane king hall is in new york with those stories and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning.

ibm on deck, along with sever -- with self -- with several closely watched tech companies including netflix. meantime, all three major indices ended in positive territory on friday. the dow industrials rallied 164 points. the nasdaq added 13. the s&p 500 gained 15 points. federal regulators are urging people with kids and pets to immediately stop using peloton's tread-plus treadmill. the warning comes after this hard-to-watch video surfaced of a a boy playing with a ball when he gets pulled and trapped under the equipment. fortunately he is okay. the consumer product safety commission says it's aware of 39 similar incidents with this treadmill including one death. peloton is calling the warning, quote, inaccurate and misleading. bit coin is suffering the steepest slide since february

tsa agents at houston's hobby airport found something unusual in a traveler's breakfast burrito. during an x-ray screening, they first noticed a strange lump. the elisteas justakfastrito. after opening the wrapper, the agents called police who determined the lump was actually crystal meth. the traveler was arrested. two people were killed in a fiery crash in texas, and investigators say there was no one in the driver's seat at the time of the accident. deputies say the tesla model s was traveling fast and failed to navigate a turn saturday before running off the road, hitting a tree, and bursting into flames. ou they found one person in the front passenger seat and another in the rear seat. it's not clear if the car's autopilot system was being used when it crashed. the search for two people missing after a barge collided with a pleasure boat in kentucky

has turned into a recovery mission. seven people were on board the ppened on e ohio river in wd a n and a woman went missing. crews searched for them yesterday. the coast guard is investigating the crash. and we should soon know whether nasa's attempt to flight -- to fly a small helicopter on mars was a success. the ingenuity chopper was set to take off from the surface of the red planet a short while ago. it will take about several hours, though, for ground teams on earth to receive data from mars confirming the outcome. it was supposed to fly ten feet above the martian surface for about 30 seconds. it would be the first powered, nt acraft ever fly on another planet. coming up on "cbs this morning," as part of our special series "eye on earth: our planet in peril," mark phillips looks at how water affects us as we lead up to earth day.
