well, this morning, jury deliberations will continue in derek chauvin's murder trial. yesterday, the panel heard nearly six hours of closing arguments and rebuttal in the case against the former minneapolis police officer charged with george floyd's death. the jury met late in the night but didn't come up with a verdict on any of the counts. chauvin has pleaded not guilty to charges of second degree murder, third degree murder and second degree manslaughter. skyler henry is in minneapolis. skyler, this all comes as the defense attorney called for a mistrial right at the end there, right? >> reporter: that's right, anne-marie. good morning to you. the defense says given the high profile nature of the trial and media exposure and stern words from maxine waters when she was here visiting the twin cities are grounds for a mistrial.

she told a group of protesters in the daunte wright protests that she should be more confrontational if derek chauvin is acquitted. nds fo appeal.ed that reqhest e the jury continues to deliberate one day after hearing closing arguments before both sides. >> i submit to you that the state has failed to meet its burden of proof beyond a ronald doubt. >> use your common sense, believe your eyes, what you saw you saw. >> reporter: during their final plea, the prosecution again showed video of derek chauvin kneeling on george floyd for nearly 9:30 minutes. >> you were told mr. floyd died was because his heart was too big. the reason why george floyd is dead is because mr. chauvin's heart is too small. >> reporter: the defense countered saying chauvin acted reasonably and mr. floyd died because of illegal drug use. >> they just want you to ignore significant medical issues that

presented to. mr. floyd. >> reporter: the jury is skweft e sequestered in a hotel while it deliberates. and the nation is anxiously awaiting a result. >> blackr:ocal officials urged protters who remain peaceful after last year's violence that ensued after mr. floyd's death. >> we cannot cure harm by inflicting harms on others. >> reporter: cities across the country are preparing for mass demonstrations. >> we will continue to support peaceful protests inside the city of atlanta. >> reporter: chauvin faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted. now, speaking to the level of security in this area, about an hour ago, we saw several dozen security or sheriff's officers combing and entiring the area around the hennepin county courthouse here where this trial is being held. again, jury deliberations are expected to continue later on this morning.

walter mondale's political career was marked with an early success. he became attorney general at 32 and was elected to u.s. senate in 36. in 1976, jimmy carter tapped mondale to be his running mate on the democratic presidential ticket. >> and i'm proud and honored to be a part of this team. >> reporter: after carter's victory, mondale immediately beefed up the job of vice president, moving the vice president's office to the west wing of the white house. he started having weekly luncheons with the president. both traditions endure to this day. carter was defeated for re-election in 1980. four years later, mondale sought the top job for himself but he faced a popular president in ronald reagan who was running for re-election. >> mr. reagan will raise taxes, and so will i. he won't tell you, i just did. >> rteondalere defeats in u.s. historal >>onald reagan still has a chance, has a chance, for a historic 50-state sweep.

>> reporter: president reagan beat mondale in 49 states leaving mondale with only the electoral votes from his home state of minnesota and washington, d.c. after that defeat, mondale moved back and forth between public and private sector, he served as ambassador to japan under president clinton. in 2002, he lost his attempt to reclaim his old minnesota senate seat, but he was gracious in defeat. >> and what is obviously the end of my last campaign, i want to say to minnesotans, you always treated me decently. you always listened to me. >> reporter: and that made western humility endeared mondale to his home state and a generation of his foam democrats. natalie brand, cbs news washington. well, in a statement, the mondale family said plans for memorials will be announced later for both minnesota and washington, d.c.

the chief medical officer in washington said capitol officer brian sicknick who was attacked in the capitol riots died of natural caus he suffered two strokes. investigators initially thought sicknick was hit in a head by a fire extinguisher. he later thought we may have ingested a chemical substance. last month, federal prosecutors charged two men with using bear spray on sicknick during the riots. moderna says by the fall it will have a third booster shot for its two-dose covid vaccine. studies show the shot is 90% effective against the virus six months after the second dose. it's unclear how long immunity from covid lasts. the same is true for pfizer's vaccine. regardless, dr. anthony fauci is encouraging people to get a shot. >> we all want normalcy in america. the highway to that normalcy is vaccination.

as the country comes off a record-breaking year for wildfires more conservation groups want to reduce the number of fires in 2021. and one group in maryland is trying to do so by fighting fire with fire. skyler henry explains. >> that will be a little fire right down here. >> reporter: these flames burning in western maryland are controlled. for nearly ten years, forest lines like this is where natasha whetzel is in command. >> i've probably been on over -- definitely over 200 burns. yeah, i've been loving every minute of it. >> reporter: whetzel oversees controlled burns for the labor conservancy, one of the largest fire organizations in the world. cl conditions, whetzel and her team are searing 20,000 acre which is she says are more critical than ever. >> we know with climate change. conditions are going to change. species are going to migrate. and we need to ensure we have healthy, resilient forests.

that's good. >> reporter: the burns also help prevent wildfires by treating the land before conditions are too dry. the national infraagency fire center says nearly 59,000 wildfires burned through nearly 10 million acres across the country last year. a significant uptick from 2019. one of the differences in the wildfires and the controlled fires is the intensity of the fires themselves. wildfires can get so hot they kill everything including the fire adapted plant species. these burns do the opposite. ecologist dr. deborah landau says controlled burns are restoring plant species that have been dormant for, in some cases, centuries. >> without fire, we're going to lose a lot of these plants that have evolved with fire and require fire in order to regenerate. >> reporter: whetzel said for her group it's about stepping in where nature otherwise wouldn't.
