we're going to begin this morning with president biden heading to pennsylvania to sell his vision for america. yesterday, mr. biden held a rally in georgia, a state that helped him win the presidency, to celebrate his first 100 days in office. he touted his infrastructure and jobs plan, along with his latest proposal to expand early education. and he also took time-out to catch up with former president jimmy carter. elise preston is in new york. what message will president biden bring to pennsylvania today? >> reporter: president biden is spending much of this time talking about his two spending plans. 100 days into his presidency, president biden is looking ahead to what's next. >> i've never been more optimistic about the future in america, and america's on the move again. >> reporter: on thursday, the president visited georgia, a state that helped him win the office. >> i mean this from the bottom

of my heart. there's not a single thing we can't do when we do it together. >> reporter: fresh off his first address to a joint session of congress. >> the american jobs plan is a blue collared blueprint. >> mr. biden is traveling the country to sell his vision to the american people that includes two spending plans on families an jobs. >> he would not only need to invest in america, we need to invest in families, we need to invest in things our families care about and need the most. >> republicans have their concerns. >> more taxes, more spending, more borrowing. >> those some are ready to find common ground on infrastructure. like west virginia's shelly moore capito who tweeted she had a productive and substantive call with president biden. the two sides are also working on police reform and families of george floyd and eric garner met with a bipartisan group of lawmakers in washington yesterday. >> they got to hear directly from the families whose blood will be on the legislation.

>> reporter: president biden called on congress to pass a bill by the anniversary of floyd's murder next month. and president biden will visit virginia on monday, to continue promoting his plan. anne-marie? >> elise preston in new york, thank you so much. so breaking overnight, there was a deadly stampede in northern israel. it was one of the country's worst civilian disasters. at least 44 people were killed and 150 injured. this terrifying scene played out today during a mass religious festival. it's estimated at least 100,000 people gathered for the event. witnesses say the stampede began when large numbers of people crowded a narrow tunnel-like passage. some people were asphyxiated or trampled. police are investigating. the prime minister benjamin netanyahu called it a great tragedy. he said everyone was praying for the victims. and now to the coronavirus pandemic, india is struggling to contain its devastating surge in new covid infections. overall, more than 208,000 fatalities from the virus have been reported there.

that includes nearly 3500 deaths yesterday alone. emergency equipment arrived in the country today. ian lee reports. >> reporter: these american medical supplies are bound for india. the shipment includes essential, like rapid covid tests and masks for front line workers. everywhere you look in india, people are dead or dying. hospital beds and oxygen are in short supply. forcing doctors to make some tough decisions. many covid patients end up here, at the cemetery. this man says he digs graves nonstop because the bodies just keep coming. daily deaths have nearly tripled in the past three weeks. the death toll now stands at over 200,000. this grave digger says we've run out of space, so they're squeezing bodies together. crematoriums are running out of

wood. so trees are cut down in city parks, but still, it's not enough to keep up. vaccinations for all adults are supposed to start on saturday, but even as the world's biggest vaccine producer, india doesn't have enough doses for everyone. the u.s. is flying in raw materials to make vaccines, while russia and britain are sending in medicine and ventilators. ian lee, cbs news. new york city is set to fully reopen this summer after more than a year of closures and restrictions. mayor bill deblasio had these encouraging remarks yesterday. >> it's time to set a goal for a full reopening of new york city, and that goal is july 1st. we are ready to bring new york city back fully, on july 1st. all systems go. because you've earned it. >> deblasio said the reopening is possible given the progress in vaccinating the city's more than eight million residents

against covid. moderna is doubling the production of its coronavirus vaccines, the company announced yesterday it will ramp up production to three billion doses. that's an increase from late february when moderna predicted that it could supply up to 1.4 billion doses of its shot in 2022. now, demand for moderna's vaccine has risen, amid some concerns about vaccines by astrazeneca and johnson & johnson over manufacturing issues and possible links to rare blood clots. eight young men in ohio are facing criminal charges in the hazing death of 20-year-old student at bowling green state university. and mola lenghi reports, the boy's parents want justice. report prosecutors announce the indictment of eight current and former bowling green state university students for a hazing ritual that went too far. >> the result of the event was catastrophic. >> reporter: the young men were

charged in the death of the 20-year-old sophomore stone foltz, involuntary manslaughter, hazing and failure to comply with underaged alcohol laws. >> the autopsy indicated that stone died from fatal alcohol intoxication during the hazing event with a blood alcohol content of .35, over four times the legal limit. >> it was part of a hazing ritual, part of the pi kappa alpha fraternity, with the equivalent of 17 shots of alcohol. >> do you see his chest rising up and down? >> no, not right now. >> is he blue? >> yeah. >> there's a good chance he's not breathing. >> after three days in the hospital, foltz was taken off life support. sherry spoke with her son on the night of the party. >> he had said to me yeah, we have a drinking ritual that we have to go to, and i'm not looking forward to it. >> what does peace and justice look like?

>> to us, it's to, you know, hold those accountable for what has happened. >> mola lenghi, cbs news. five people are dead, including two north carolina sheriff's deputies, after a 13-hour standoff. authorities reported to a home in the town of boon on wednesday, to check on a person who did not show up for work. the 32-year-old suspect, identified as alton barnes, is accused of shooting and killing two deputies when they entered the home. officials say he also shot and killed his mother and step dad before turning the gun on himself. a procession was held last night to honor sergeant chris ward, one of the deputies killed. a motive has not been released. coming up, a bombshell development in the matt gaetz investigation. a letter claims the congressman paid for sex with a minor. and new trouble for a reality tv star. duggar from "19 thisths morng news. is is the cbs . the light. ♪ it comes from within.

tree. that is a young that's not a cat in that tree. that is a young bear. it's back in the wild now, after it was spotted in a tree in downtown colorado springs. wildlife officers had to tranquilize it to get it down, and the bear took quite a tumble when it fell to the ground. thankfully was not injured and was released into the mountains. reality tv star josh duggar was arrested and there's a new development in the matt gaetz investigation. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the daily beast says it obtained a letter from long time associate florida congressman matt gaetz, claiming gaetz paid for sex with a minor, the lter reedtten by formergreenbg,aythar . nbfas zens o arges including setrfiinisorte operating with investigators. gaetz has denied having sex or paying for sex with a 17-year-old girl as an adult.

the "washington post" post says former reality star josh duggar was arrested and put in jail in arkansas. according to the washington county jail's web site, duggar was taken into custody yesterday by u.s. marshals. it is unclear what charges he faces. prosecutors declined to comment. he is the eldest son of the show "19 kids and counting", the show was pulled in 2015 over revelations that josh duggar had molested four of his sisters and a babysitter. "the new york times" says los angeles police have arrested five people in connection with the february shooting of lady gaga's dog walker and the theft of tf the five suspects appeared in this courtroom yesterday, three faced attempted murder and robbery charges. including two women, who returned the dogs to police two

amazon saw profit more than triple to $8.1 billion, as the pandemic boom continues. the e-commerce giant posted record first quarter sales of more than 100 billion, fueled by the growth of online shopping. it is the second quarter in a row the company passed that milestone. and part of the reason why revenue will be so high is also because of prime day. the company didn't specify a date for the event this year, but said it would happen before the end of june. the fda is moving to ban the sale of menthol-flavored cigarettes. the announcement comes before a deadline to respond to a federal lawsuit from public health groups seeking the ban. the fda says the action will help save countless lives, including those in black itiero rs a final ban could take years to implement and it is expected to be fought by big tobacco. and people could soon book a
