i'm anne-marie green. we begin this morning in california. crews searched overnight for more possible victims after a boat capsized off the coast of san diego. rescuers responded to the scene yesterday morning. authorities say the 40-foot boat with dozens on board overturned during a at least four people are dead and two dozen are hospitalized. laura podesta has the latest developments from new york for us. laura, what new details are coming out now? >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. officials say they believe that everyone has been accounted for, but they continue to search through the night. through the night. lifeguards say there was a wide range of injuries including hypothermia.ee a boat carrying more than two dozen people capsized near san diego on sunday. duty when he saw people in the water. >> i gave everything to my wife and said, i'll see you in a bit,

and jumped in the water. >> reporter: he and another man training for the navy s.e.a.l.s helped survivors get to pieces of floating debris before lifeguards, the u.s. coast guard, and other agencies arrived. >> we train for the worst and expect for the best. today was not the best. but it's something that i always had in the back of my mind, it just actually happened. >> reporter: lieutenant rick romero believes the 40-foot wooden boat was broken up by the waves. >> in my 28 years of working, i've never seen anything like this or been on a call of this magnitude. i saw people getting sucked out. floating out. some were facedown. then a whole bunch of people down below, all along the base of the cliff there. >> reporter: officials suspect it was a human smuggling operation. agents are interviewing the survivors including the captain. >> they don't care about the people they're exploiting. awful they care about is profit. to them, these people are just commodities. you can see that in the way that they treat them. >> reporter: border patrol said last week it would be ramping up operations in the area this

the country managed to beat the first wave a year ago, and authorities opened up even to mass religious and political gatherings. now indian families, especially the poor, are paying the price. the other covid hot spot is brazil with a per capita death rate even higher than india's now. a vaccination program that's reached into brazil's vast interior has distributed more than 40 million doses. but in the cities with no lockdown, it's no surprise the virus has continued to spread. and in turkey where the covid rate started to climb steeply last month, authorities anxioush and from europe at last some good news. both deaths and infections are falling as vaccination rates rise. some countries are talking about opening the borders again to travelers.

"usa today" reports the funeral of andrew brown jr. will be held today in north carolina. hundreds of mourners paid their respects to the 42-year-old black man yesterday at two public viewings. brown was shot and killed last month in elizabeth city. by sheriff's deputies serving drug-related warts. an independent autopsy conducted by the family found that he was shot five times including once in the back of his head. protests calling on authorities to release body camera footage of the shooting continued over the weekend. our milwaukee affiliate wdjt reports on a deadly shooting at a casino complex in green bay. two people were killed and another person was hurt when a gunman opened fire inside police shot and killed a gunman. authorities are set to hold a news conference this morning to release more information about the shooting. and "the washington post" reports caitlyn jenner says that she opposes transgender girls

on the cbs "money watch," apple's app store goes on trial today and tesla's giga factory hits a speed bump. diane king hall is in new york with those stories and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this week investors have another packed week of corporate earnings to review including results from pfizer and moderna along with the latest monthly jobs report from the labor department. meantime, stocks ended lower on friday to close out april. the dow slid 185 points. the nasdaq dropped 119, and the s&p 500 lost 30. apple is facing one of its california court today. a federal case is being brought by epic games. the maker of the popular game "fortnite" at stake. the future of the app store and amount it charges developers. epic says apple has transformed the once tiny digital storefront into an illegal monopoly that squeezes mobile apps for a significant cut of their earnings. apple denies epic's charge.
