♪ it's tuesday, may 4th, 2021. this is the "cbs morning news." expanded availability. the new group of americans that could soon be able to get a coronavirus vaccine. we'll tell you the announcement from pfizer. deadly train derailment. we have the very latest on the overpass collapse in mexico that has left more than a dozen dead. and splitting up. one of the richest and most powerful couples in the world are getting a divorce after nearly three decades of marriage. what it means for bill and melinda gates' future. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with breaking news

overnight out of mexico. more than a dozen people are dead after an overpass carrying a commuter train collapsed in mexico city, sending the train plunging to the ground. this video shows the moment the overpass collapsed last night, crashing down on the street below. not long after, this orange and yellow train came through and detailed. the city's mayor said at least 20 people were killed include something minors. about 70 were hurt. it's unclear if most of the dead were on the subway cars or whether they were people caught below. no word on the cause. but the incident happened on a train line whose construction has been the subject of complaints. and now to the pandemic, and a much anticipated decision in the race to get more americans vaccinated. the fda is set to authorize the use of pfizer's vaccine in children between the ages of 12 and 15 as early as next week. more than 246 million people in the u.s. are vaccinated against

the coronavirus. the number of americans who are fully immunized tops 105 million, or nearly 32% of the total population. laura podesta is in new york. laura, the fda's decision on pfizer is pretty big. >> reporter: it is. you know, this could pave the way fortuton t school or participate in more summer activities like camp. it's also impactful for children with underlying health conditions who are more at risk for severe illness from covid. cbs news has learned the fda is expected to authorize pfizer's covid vaccine for children as young as 12 as soon as next week. >> to reach herd immunity, we need a certain number of the general population including this age group to be virginia natured. athletics, dances and other gatherings are going to be safe per the majority of kids are vaccinated.

>> reporter: scott scogottlieb on pfizer board. >> reporter: 13-year-old caleb chung is one of two children ages 12 to 15 who took part in pfizer's trial which found the vaccine was 100% effective. >> potentially helping other kids to feel safe and want to get the vaccine in the future whether it becomes available was really something that i could actually help out. >> reporter: across the country states and cities continue to reopen. here in new york and neighboring connecticut and new jersey, most capacity restrictions will be lifted on may 19th. >> events that we all associate with the summer from fireworks displays to parades to the state fair can all go forward. >> reporter: it's another story in oregon where a variant has led to one of the largest increases infections in the country. >> this virus is like a sucker

punch. >> reporter: the governor limited indoor gyms and spaces indoor in half the state. and for those of you itching to tral, a new proposal from the european union says vaccinated americans may be able to travel across the pond by the end of june, anne-marie. >> hmm, laura podesta in new york. laura, thank you. >> reporter: thanks. so, ahead on "cbs this morning," we will be talking to the dean of brown university's school of public health, dr. ashish jha about how vaccine hesitancy could keep the u.s. from reaching herd immunity. developing this morning now, an investigation is under way after authorities shot an armed suspect outside of cia headquarters. the incident unfolded around 6:00 p.m. yesterday in mclean, virginia. the fbi said the suspect emerged from his week with a weapon and was engaged by the officers. a source near the scene told cbs news he heard 13 shots.

the suspect was taken to the hospital. authorities say agents had responded to a rot of a suspicious vehicle. they say the cia headquarters was not breached. . president biden is busy promoting his 1. $8 trillion american families plan. mr. biden and the first lady yesterday made stops at a school in virginia to push the education proposals. skyler henry says why it's so critical to invest in our children's future. >> reporter: education was the focus as president biden travelled to southeast virginia to sell his roughly $4 trillion jobs and families plan. his proposals call for universal preschool, tuition-free community college and expanded child benefits. >> for all our children are the kite strings that lift our ambitions along. we've got to invest in him. >> reporter: he and the first lady toured an hvac. class. >> best thing you guys will get

white house. >> president biden has raised situation facing backlash for initially wanting to keep the low ceiling set by former president trump. yesterday, mr. biden raised the refugee admissions to nearly 63,000 this year. the trump administration had capped it at 15,000. mr. biden said the lower number did not reflect america's values. meantime, the number of children in border custody has dropped dramatically. customs was holding 677 children over the weekend and that is down from march. the coast guard ended its search for survivors after a boat capsized off the coast of the san diego. three people were killed when the 40-footesit 32 people on board overturned and broke apart. one person was critically injured. authorities responded to the

scene about 20 miles north of the u.s./mexico border sunday. they say it was all part of a migrant smuggling separation. and overnight, deadly weather slammed parts of the south. witness say a tornado touched down in ellis county, texas last night. torrential rains belted atlanta toppling trees and power lines. a twister touched down in douglasville. at least two storm-related deaths were reported in georgia. and of help on board. this is the "cbs morning news."

verizon was exploring the sale since it has struggled to grow its media properties. the company will instead focus on its wireless business. and the update, tomorrow, facebook's oversight board is deciding whether to formally suspect president trump from facebook and its social media ban. in february, the board confirmed it received an appeal on mr. trump seeking to reinstate his account. ceo mark zuckerberg who supports the suspension cannot override the board's decision. and now for some out of this world news. lydell, a filtration company is testing some ways to make breathing available on mars. the company is testing the rover which turns carbon dioxide in mars to breathe oxygen.
