to get the covid vaccine as demand continues to drop. the number of people getting a first shot or single dose has declined 50% since peaking on april 15th. the same day health officials announced a pause on the johnson & johnson vaccine. at least 25 state said they did not order all the supply that's available to them for this week. instead, the extra doses will now go to states with higher demand. laura podesta is in new york. laura, what's the president's new goal now then? >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. his new goal is by july 4th to have at least 70% of american adults with one shot and 160 million adults fully vaccinated. right now just over 105 million are. >> hello, hello. passing out covid-19 vaccine information -- >> reporter: canvassers with detroit's health department are

going door to door looking to educate people on the covid-19 vaccines. >> are you interested in being vaccinated? >> yeah. >> awesome. >> reporter: they'll knock on about 200,000 doors over the next few months as they seek out those who haven't made up their mind. >> there's obviously some vaccine hesitancy going on, and when they know the facts, i think it will help. >> reporter: at the white house, president biden laid out a new vaccination plan. >> our goal by july 4th is to have 70% of adult americans with at least one shot and 160 million americans fully vaccinated. >> reporter: right now, around 106 million americans are fully vaccinated. the white house says boosting vaccine confidence is one way to hit its target, making these canvassers an essential part of the process. >> it's not one kind of strategy that works. you really have to go where people are, talk to them. >> reporter: the administration also hopes to vaccinate millions of 12 to 15-year-olds as soon as the fda authorizes it which is expected as soon as this week. >> we just know that there's a

ton of anxiety for the parents out there. >> reporter: this pharmacy in wisconsin is already booking tentative appointments. >> i'm glad we have plenty of vaccines. >> reporter: the white house is working to make it more convenient to get a vaccine with more walk-in appointments, popup clinics, and mobile units. the white house is also changing how it distributes vaccines. if a state does not want its full allotment, then those doses will go to states with the demand. anne-marie? >> laura podesta in new york. laura, thank you. >> reporter: thanks. so ahead on "cbs this morning," cdc director rochelle walensky has more on president biden's goal to vaccinate more americans. the death toll has risen to at least three following severe twier tore through the north side of mississippi's capital yesterday afternoon. tere were reports of downed trees, power lines, and roof

damage across jackson. crews rushed to rescue people from their first-floor apartments in alabama. they used boats to move across the flooded parking lot as torrential rains slammed large parts of the state. >> we have taken several elderly people out. we've found them another place to stay. just to keep them safe in the meantime. at this time, we have no injuries. >> right now more than 270,000 people in the south are still without power since the severe storm hit. former president trump will learn today whether he'll be allowed back on facebook. the social media company's oversight committee will announce this morning whether his ban is indefinite. mr. trump's facebook and instagram accountse suspended after the deadly assault on the u.s. capitol in january. meantime, the former president yesterday launched a new website titled "from the desk of donald j. trump." it's designed to communicatecti.

with u.s. troops pulling out of afghanistan, there is a new large-scale military offensive in the war-torn country. as charlie d'agata reports, taliban forces are wasting no time trying to seize as much control as possible. >> reporter: from the moment u.s. troops started pulling back, the taliban went on the offensive. a fierce fire-fight shows afghan forces battling against taliban militants trying to overrun an outpost. cbs news has obtained video of the taliban in that very region, a show of force right on the doorstep of the capital kabul. the afghan military told us coordinated taliban offenses are ongoing in 20 provinces across the country including volatile helmand province where a base was handed over to afghan forces just two days ago. despite deploying elite afghan troop reinforcements to the southern province, local leaders warn today that helmand is on

the verge of collapse. as the u.s. pull-out got under way, we asked first vice president sali his prediction. how long can the afghan military hold its own against the taliban? >> forever. afghanistan is not conquerable by the taliban. in one way or another we will withstand. this country will not be talibanized. >> reporter: the resolve is being tested as the group stems up attacks. launching a major taliban offensive in helmand province carries significance. the battlefield saw some of the heaviest fighting between the taliban and american forces during the 20-year war. charlie d'agata, cbs news, kabul. an attorney for derek chauvin, the former minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering george floyd, is requesting a new trial. in a document filed yesterday, defense attorney eric nelson detailed a number of errors he believes were made in the case

which he says violated chauvin's rights to due process and a fair trial. the new court filing in part is seeking to impeach the verdict because of what he says is jury misconduct. chauvin was convicted last month of murdering floyd. a mother and son are back together after being separated at the border nearly four years ago by the trump administration's zero tolerance policy. brian chavez and his mom sandra reunited yesterday in california. the two haven't seen each other since 2017. they came to america seeking refuge from mexican gangs. brian was placed in a refugee camp while his mother was deported. >> no words to describe the happiness that i'm feeling right now, and i'm grateful with all the people that did this amazing work to allow my mom to come back. >> more than 5,500 families were separated by the trump administration. it's believed more than 1,000

"usa today" reports a florida high school student accused of rigging a homecoming queen election faces up to 16 years in prison. prosecutors say 18-year-old emily grover will be tried as an adult. and hemother elementary sl principal, allegedly gained unauthorized access into a student data system to cast hundreds of fake votes for grover. she was 17 years old at the time of her arrest in march but turned 18 last month. space.com says spacex launched another 60 starlink internet satellites into orbit on "star wars" day. >> three, two, one, zero, ignition. and liftoff. may the fourth be with us. >> a reused rocket making its record tying ninth flight blasted off in florida yesterday. it was the space company's 13th

anne-marie. stock futures are indicating a higher open after wall street was rattled yesterday. the treasury secretary said yesterday interest rates may have to increase to keep the economy from overheating. the dow rose 19 points while the nasdaq skidded 261, suffering its worst one-day decline since march. the s&p 500 dropped 28. former faranos ceo elizabeth holmes made her first court appearance in 15 months. holmes, charged with fraud in the rise and fall of the blood testing company, appeared in a federal court in san jose, california, yesterday. a judge weighed what evidence the jury in her criminal trial will hear. faranos shut down in 2018 after a "wall street journal" investigation exposed meantime, target has an ces incentive for people to get the covid-19 vaccine. the retailer says starting this week, anyone who gets vaccinated at cvs pharmacies inside target

stores will get a $5 coupon. the big box chain says it's making the offer to the general public and employees as part of its public support of vaccination efforts. now in march target said it was teaming up with cvs to help get americans vaccinated against the coronavirus. and would you spend $1 million for a bottle of wine? that's how much christie's says a french wine could fetch at auction. it was one of 12 bottle that's spent more than a year in orbit aboard the international space station in 2019. researchers were exploring the potential for extraterrestrial agriculture. wine experts say the wine returned subtly altered. the sale includes a corkscrew crafted from a meteorite. the money collected will fund future space missions. anne-marie? >> well, to answer your question, i'm more of a $12 bottle of wine budget kind of person. but i was reading that there are some significant changes in the aroma and the taste of the wean that was aged in space.

the birth of their son archie. archie turns 2 tomorrow. a retiring therapy dog got quite a sendoff from the staff of a california hospital. just take a look. [ applause ] workers at doctors medical center in modesto threw 12-year-old tassy a retirement paw-ty. paw, right? last week. tassy and her owner worked at the hospital helping patients there for more than eight years. and an ohio amusement park had an unusual way to test a new roller coaster. the kings island park filled its orion giga coaster with 20 bob ross dolls. ross was a popular american artist and host of a pbs show that ran in the '80s and '90s. you may be familiar. the coaster plunges dolls and future human guests down a 300-foot drop and hits speeds of up to 91 miles per hour. the dolls will be available as coming up on "cbis at the .
