almost 14 months into the pandemic, there's a possible roadmap to getting the virus under control in the u.s. the cdc says in the best case scenario there could be a major drop in new infections, hospitalizations, and deaths by july. that is only if people across the country continue to get vaccinated. laura podesta is in new york. the cdc does have a warning, though. >> reporter: it sure does. good morning. it says that if unvaccinated people choose not to wear a mask or socially distance that we could see another surge and be further away from herd immunity. the u.s. could see a dramatic drop in the number of covid-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths according to new projections from the cdc. >> in good news, the models projected a sharp decline in cases by july, 2021, and an even faster decline if more people get vaccinated sooner. >> reporter: cdc director

rochelle walensky did offer a warning if unvaccinated people don't wear masks or socially distance. >> variants are a wild card that could reverse this progress we have made. >> reporter: the biden administration hopes 70% of the country will be at least partially vaccinated by july 4th. health experts say the margins could be razor thin. >> 5% or 6% could be the difference between really having protection as a society versus still having a lot of active cases out there. >> reporter: as the country reopens -- >> the more people get vaccinated, the more they feel safe to come in. >> reporter: some are working to overcome their nerves after a year inside. >> ask yourself what you used to love doing, going to the museum, did you love a specific store at the mall. it will give you something to look forward to even if there is anxiety and stress. >> repr:or mlie rk with her fam. >> i told my son, we're going to be out a lot more than last summer, so get used to it. >> reporter: for others it may be a trip to the ballpark.

in new york, vaccines are being offered to people attending mets or yankees games. fans who get a shot will be given a free ticket to a future game. and to help fight the virus overseas, the biden administration is supporting the world trade organization to e rty rules that countries can manufacture their own vaccines based on the ones from moderna and pfizer. anne-marie? >> laura podesta in new york, thank you. well, the number-three house republican may be in the final days of her leadership post. liz cheney is facing calls for her ouster over her continued opposition to former president trump. she's spoken against his claims of a stolen election and voted to impeach mr. trump in january. she wrote an opinion essay for "the washington post" saying the gop must steer away from the dangerous and anti-democratic trump cult personality. some republicans are supporting

new york representative elise stefanak to replace cheney. she was endorsed by donald trump yesterday. a vote could come as early as next week. caitlyn jenner sat down for her first major tv interview since announcing her bid to become california's next governor. she spoke with fox news host sean hannity last night about her hopes of replacing governor gavin newsom in the expected recall election. the transgender republican and gold medal-winning olympic athlete said that she'd bring that same determination that she had in sports to politics. >> i need to find solutions to be able to turn this state around. i absolutely love this state. i'm a fighter. always have been. i come from a long line of fighters. >> jenner also said that she agreed with former president trump on some matters but not others, including transgender and lgbtq issues. a colorado man was arrested on suspicion of murder in the presumed death of his missing wife.

barry morphew was arrested yesterday and is due in court today for a bond hearing. the 49 -- his 49-year-old wife suzanne disappeared last mother's day after leaving her home for a bike ride. her body has not been found. the district attorney said that this is a big break in the case. >> today is a good day for suzanne. as far as i am concerned, today is all about suzanne. and it's about her family, and it's about all the individuals that knew her and loved her and cared about her. >> barry morphew faces charges of tampering with physical evidence and attempting to influence a public servant. a white police officer in atlanta who was fired from his job after shooting and killing a black man is back in the department. garrett rolfe shot rayshard brooks after he grabbed the officer's taser and took off.

rolfe was officially reinstated yesterday after atlanta's civil service board ruled his firing a day after the shooting violated his right to due process. rolfe is still awaiting trial and will not return to work as an atlanta police officer. former president trump remains banned from facebook this morning, but the decision from facebook's oversight board still leaves the door open for mr. trump to rejoin the social network. natalie brand explains. >> reporter: facebook's independent oversight board has upheld the social media giant's decision to suspend former president trump's access to facebook and instagram following the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol. but the board went on to say it was not appropriate for facebook to impose the indeterminate and standardless penalty of indefinite suspension telling facebook to review the matter within six months. >> it must either restore mr. trump's account finding that the period of suspension has met its purpose, make the suspension permanent, or suspend the account for a determinate period

of time. re to as facebk's rights lawyers, constitutional law experts, and even the former prime minister of denmark. >> there are actually clear rules within facebook themselves, in the community standards to which penalties and sanctions they can use. but in this case, they chose not to use any of these but use an indefinite penalty. they can't do that. >> reporter: during the capitol riot former president trump told supporters to leave but also repeated false election claims. >> go home. we love you. you're very special. >> reporter: the independent board agreed that mr. trump violated facebook's rules prohibiting praise or support of people engaged in violence and byontinuclectionfraud. in a statement, mr. trump blasted facebook saying in part what the social media companies have done is, quote, a total disgrace.

those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "los angeles times" reports the lone survivor of a deadly mass shooting at a southern california business complex is out of the hospital. blanca tomio was released from the hospital yesterday with a bullet still lodged in her head. she had a helmet on to protect her damaged skull. she wore a t-shirt with the image of her son who died in her arms during the attack. her 28-year-old daughter, a former boyfriend, and a colleague were also killed when a gunman stormed their office. >> i've got my family. the father of my -- my boy. and you know, my -- couple for many years. my son -- they're there to love me and support me. and i'm thankful for that. >> the suspected gunman faces multiple charges including four counts of murder. authorities have not revealed a motive for the attack.

"the new york times" says after four early failed attempts, spacex successfully landed its prototype starship rocket back on earth. the bullet-shaped spacecraft touched down on a landing pad in texas yesterday after soaring more than six miles above the gulf of mexico. four previous test flights exploded during or after landing. spacex hopes to use this type of rocket to one day fly people to the moon and mars. and "reuters" says a woman from the west african nation of mali gave birth to nine babies. the 25-year-old delivered the five girls and four boys on tuesday by caesarean section in morocco after being sent there for special care. mother and children are doing well. ultrasounds earlier had only detected seven babies. it's the first time on record that a woman gave birth to nine surviving babies at once. still ahead, raising the curtain. broadway fans get one step closer to enjoying their favorite shows.

latest report on new weekly jobless claims. meantime, stock futures are indicating a lower open after a mixed session on wall street. the dow gained 97 points. the nasdaq fell 51, and the s&p 500 added two. peloton is recalling all of its treadmills after one child died and dozens of other incidents were reported. the company says it will offer full refunds for the peloton tread plus treadmill through november and will stop selling them as it modifies the hardware. the move comes less than a month after the company denied they were dangerous saying it would not pull them from the market. so an aboutface. the paycheck protection program meant to help small businesses ravaged by the pandemic has run dry. the program officially ends at the end of the month. only a billion dollars remains, but it's earmarked for businesses run by women, minorities, and other underserved communities. that largely leaves the window closed for most businesses. right now it's unclear if lawmakers will approve another
