good morning. good to be with you.e naing a s covid. the for daily cases is now at the lowest point in seven months. this as we get encouraging news in the race to vaccinate america. moderna says its latest vaccine trials reveal its shot is 96% effective against the virus in kids ages 12 to 17. laura podesta has the latest developments from new york. laura, we could get some news about pfizer, as well, next week. >> reporter: that's right, good morning. pfizer's vaccine is expected to be approved for children ages 12 to 15 early next week. this could be a game changer when it comes to schools reopening and summer activities. covid-19 appears to be in retreat in most of the u.s. the average number of new cases has fallen to fewer than 47,000 a day. that's less than a fifth of what

it was in early january. >> if people come and say thank god you are open, i say, no, thank you god you are here. >> reporter: the decline is happening as mask mandates and social distancing rules are relaxed. >> even though we're opening up and mingling, cases are staying lows. that's what vaccination does. >> reporter: the cdc says 45% of the country has received at least one dose of a covid vaccine. in some areas, demand has gotten so low that more than two dozen states are no longer ordering every dose available. >> part of this is expected, but also it is quite unfortunate because there's still plenty of people that need to get vaccinated. >> reporter: public health officials are trying to convince more people to get immunized. in washington, shots are being offered with a complementary drink. >> free beer. >> reporter: the rest of the world has not been as fortunate with new cases in latin american africa and asia. india that accounts for half of

the new cases reported more than 412,000 yesterday, the highest one-day total for any country since the pandemic began. in india, hospitals even in the capital city of new delhi continue to turn covid patients away. u.s. hospitals are now sending supplies like ventilators to india, but there are new reports saying that some of that cargo is being held up in indian airport hangars. india's government says that that report is not true. >> laura podesta in new york. thank you very much. so this in tuation at a bank in minneso st oveth a sct in hours of negotiation. fbi agents stormed a wells fargo bank in st. cloud last night and arrested the suspect identified as 35-year-old ray rico mcneary. authorities say he has an extensive criminal history. over the course of several hours yesterday, hostages came out one

by one with their hands up. at one point the suspect threw a wad of cash out the door. authorities say the victims were not hurt. >> i can tell you that some of the hostages were released by the suspect, and some flat out made a run for the door and made it out safely. >> the police chief says it's not clear if the suspect had a weapon. police were called to the bank after the manager reported a disgruntled man who was upset about a previous transaction. an investigation is ongoing. in florida a controversial new voting law is facing several lawsuits to stop it. governor desantis signed the law yesterday on live television. it changes how people can vote despite then-president trump winning the state in 2020. as manuel bojorquez reports, critics say it's a move to suppress voting rights. the strongest election integrity measures in the country, i'm going to sign it right here -- >> reporter: it's controversial

right down to how florida governor ron desantis signed the >> over here -- >> reporter: the law limits makingin voting, restricts the mail-in voting, restrict the hours drop boxes are open, and requires floridians to show i.d. for new mail-in billion on the requests which they now have to do more frequently -- every two years. republicans claim it's to prevent voter fraud but offered no proof of widespread problems. a change in tune from what desantis instead february. >> florida had the most transparent and efficient election anywhere in the country. >> reporter: florida saw record mail-in voting last year with democrats mailing in nearly 700,000 more ballots than republicans. trisha brigham with the league argues the law could unfairly impact certain voters. >> these new restrictions are not taking into consideration the disabled, the elderly. we have people of color who are

working multiple jobs to try to make a living. it is -- it just clearly -- voter suppression. >> reporter: in texas the legislation is preparing to vote on similar voting restrictions. georgia passed its controversial law in march. cbs news election law expert david becker -- >> it's a solution for a problem that doesn't exist. if we all ran elections like florida did in 2020, our society, our nation would be very well off. >> reporter: several groups have filed lawsuits attempting to stop the law, and the florida supervisors of elections, the majority of whom are republicans, said in a letter that the law is unnecessary and will make voting by mail harder. manuel bojorquez, cbs news, doral, florida. >> reporter: in idaho, two ents wounded in a school shooting. the suspected shooter is a sixth grade girl. authorities say that the girl fired multiple rounds inside and outside of the middle school located in the small city of rigby. they say a teacher quickly

disarmed the suspect who has not been identified. the victims, two students and a custodian, are expected to make a full recovery. >> the fact that our -- the injuries are as insignificant as could be so much wor. we feel absolutely blessed. >> it's unclear what motivated the attack or where the suspected shooter got the gun. a large chunk of a chinese rocket will reenter earth's atmosphere sometime this weekend, but no one knows where it will land. this morning, china says debris from the rocket will be burned up on re-entry, and is highly unlikely to cause harm. the remnants of the uncontrolled rocket was spotted over washington, d.c., yesterday morning. it appeared very faintly as a tiny pulsating light in the sky. the rocket was launched last week to help establish china's new space station. the pentagon says it's closely monitoring the situation. >> at this point we -- we don't

bus with 18 elementary school students on board and told the driver to head to the next town. the rifle was empty, but those on the bus didn't know that. when the kids started asking a lot of questions, he apparently got frustrated and let them and the driver out. he drove away but was arrested. he faces dozens of charges including kidnapping. former reality star josh duggar was released from jail, and atlanta's mayor made a stunning announcement. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the atlanta journal constitution" reports the city's mayor, keisha lance bottoms, said she would not run for re-election this year. bottoms made the surprise announcement yesterday that she would not seek a second term. she had already launched her re-election campaign and held a fundraising event in march with president biden. less than a year ago, bottoms was being discussed as a possible running mate for mr. biden. she is supposed to hold a news conference this morning. "the northwest arkansas democrat gazette" says former

reality tv star josh duggar was released from jail while he awaits trial on federal child pornography charges. the 33-year-old is accused of downloading and possessing pornographic images of children. he's pleaded not guilty. this week a judge allowed him to be released to home detention. and "the san diego union tribune" says for the first time in its 100-year history, women graduated from san diego's marine corps boot camp. dozens joined their male counterparts yesterday after they went through the rigorous 13-week training. they had to accomplish the same things the men did. leading the women was a team of five trailblazing female drill instructors. >> it was definitely humbling to be put in that position. i knew how big of a deal this was. >> when i was told i was going to san diego and i would be making history, it's something i couldn't pass up. >> in 2019, congress ordered the marines to fully integrate its

s&p 500 added 34. peloton is scrambling to fix its treadmills after recalling them this week. the company says it is planning to release a software update in the next few days for its tread-plus treadmills. the exercise company will send users a digital pin code that can lock the device. peloton finally agreed to a voluntary recall of its treadmills on wednesday. one of the models was linked to the death of a child along with 29 other injuries. the company predicts the treadmill recall will cost it $165 million. airlines have banned more than 4,000 passengers for unruly behavior in the last year. people who act out are hit with a fine as part of the faa's zero-tolerance policy. in one case the federal government is requesting more than $32,000 in penalties. in that incident a passenger on a jetblue flight in february refused to wear a mask. officials say she threw anty ae another.
