good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. while millions of young americans could soon be receiving the coronavirus vaccine. yesterday, the food and drug administration authorized the use of the pfizer vaccine in children as young as 12. and it comes after more than 2,000 adolescent volunteers were tested. laura podesta is in new york. laura, i know a lot of parents are wondering what this could mean when it comes to schools reopening across the country. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie, yes, allowing kids 12 to 15 to get vaccinated is huge news for middle and high schoolers and it will mean a lot of teachers who are hesitant to return to the classroom maybe more willing now that students can get the shot. about 17 million children ages 12 to 15 can start getting the pfizer vaccine as soon as thursday after the fda expanded its emergency use authorization.

>> we know this is a big step for our country. >> reporter: acting fda deputy commissioner janet woodcock. >> the agency undertook a rigorous and thorough review of all scientific data. >> reporter: pfizer's clinical trial showed the vaccine is highly effective in preventing covid-19 in young people and there are no serious side effects. >> to be able to participate in sports or play in the band or not have the guilt associated with doing something they should be doing on a daily basis i think will be a huge relief. >> reporter: a recent study showed 30% of parents will get their kids vaccinated as soon as possible, but about a quarter say they won't. >> there's that subset of people who are maybe not complete vaccine refusalists but vaccine he is hesitant. this has taken more of a politicization. >> reporter: health officials are searching for ways to vaccinate americans who just haven't made it a priority.

>> we're going to more of the population in their 20s and 30s. >> reporter: in western new york, they gave away alcohol. >> they made tell easy here. we came in and even got a free shot and beer. >> reporter: pfizer is conducting trials 6 months to 11 years and expect to have results this fall. and today, president biden is meeting with a bipartisan group of governors, to talk about successes and best practices when it comes to getting people in their state vaccinated. anne-marie. >> laura podesta in new york. thank you so much, laura. >> reporter: thanks. ahead on "cbs this morning," we're going to talk with dr. william gruber, pfizer's senior vice president of vaccine clinical research and development and get his take on the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine for younger adolescents. the operator of a vital u.s. oil pipeline says it hopes to have most service restored by the end of the week after it was shut down after a cyber attack.

the pipeline run by colonial pipeline delivers almost half the fuel consumed by the east coast. the company halted operations last week after revealing a ransomware attack affected some of its systems. the fbi says a russian cyberhacking group called dark side is responsible. the pipeline shutdown is affecting fuel supplies. long lines of cars waiting to gas up were seen in florida. the american automobile association is warning of higher gas prices. >> where we're likely to see the soonest impact is more of the south-southeast. so, mississippi, tennessee, over to georgia and up to delaware. what that means for gas prices could be an increase of three to seven cents as early as this week. >> aaa says prices for a regular gallon of gasoline across the u.s. could soon approach $3

depending how long the pipeline is out of commission. the violence between palestinians and israeli forces stretched into another night. palestinians launched dozens of rockets from gaza while israel launched air strikes. elizabeth palmer has more. >> reporter: in the late afternoon, a barrage of hamas rockets streaked out of gaza towards jerusalem. they appeared to do minimal damage. but israel responding immediately with air strikes, which the palestinians say injured and killed civilians including nine children. serious violence broke on friday around jerusalem's al aqsa mosque. palestinians furious with israeli gatherings during ramadan hurled rocks at police who fired hand grenades. the protesters had barricades themselves inside al aqsa while running skirmishes continued with israel police. at one point, some protesters appeared to attack an israeli

car which then drove straight into them. incredibly, no one was killed. to calm the situation, authorities rerouted an israeli nationalist parade away from the palestinian protests. but it was too late to stop major escalation. jews praying at the wailing wall scattered in fear, as sirens warned of incoming rocket fire in gaza which continued through the night. elizabeth palmer, cbs news. the pentagon is revealing details of a military confrontation between the u.s. and iran in the strait of hormuz. a ship fired 30 warning shots yesterday after 30 armed sea boats of iran's revolutionary guard came close to it and other navy vessels. the pentagon said the warning shots were fired after the iranian boat came as close as 150 yards to six u.s. ships. and this was the second time in two weeks that a u.s. vessel

opened fire to warn iranian boats. and a texas man free on bond after on a murder charge is back in custody after neighbors saw a pet tiger wandering around a houston neighborhood. 26-year-old victor cuevas was arrested last night and charged with evading arrest. he was apprehended but police say they do not know where the tiger is. >> it's a stress to have him. and if that tiger was to get out and start doing some damage yesterday, i'm sure one of these citizens would have shot the tiger. we have plenty of neighbors out here with guns, and we don't want to see that. it's not the animal's fault. it's the breeder's fault. >> authorities say they believe the animal belonged to cuevas, but his lawyer denies that. well, coming up, newly released records in the breonna taylor shooting.

"the washington post" reports a louisville police investigator found the officers who killed breonna taylor should not have fired their weapons. in a december memo, the police sergeant wrote the officers had a right to protect themselves when taylor's boyfriend fired at

them. but they should not have returned fire because it put others in danger. taylor and her boyfriend kenneth walker were in taylor's apartment last year when police barged in during a botched raid. walker says he opened fire because he thought there was an intruder. some of the investigator's findings were overruled by the then police chief. "the wall street journal" said president biden is disputing republican arguments that enhanced unemployment benefits are discouraging americans from working and yeerday, mr. biden said his economic plan is working. last week's employment reports show lower than expected job growth. republicans say that's because extra benefits are making it harder for businesses to fill openings. but the president said his administration will make clear that workers receiving benefits cannot turn down suitable jobs. >> no one should be allowed to game the system.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ there's a big push against facebook's plan to create instagram for kids under 13. attorneys general from more than 40 states sent a letter to ceo mark zuckerberg saying social media could have a negative mental impact on children. there are concerns about cyberbullying and online predators. at a congressional hearing last month, zuckerberg confirmed plans to move heat to created instagram for children. on the "cbs moneywatch" now there's a safety investigation into honda accords. and chipotle is offering big bonuses. diane king hall is in new york with those stories and more. good morning, diane.

>> good morning, anne-marie. well, stock futures are indicating a lower open this morning and markets off big opening after a selloff of big tech and worries about rising inflation. the dow slipped just 34 points the nasdaq skid the 344 points, the s&p dropped 44. a serious problem affecting over 100 million accords. at least complaints have been filed from 2013 to 2015 model. owners have complained of loss of steering control, two crashes and two injuries have bio more challenges for the u.s. post service. the agency says one in five pieces of mail in the u.s. was delivered late in 2021. 28% of first class mail was delivered on time in the first quarter.
