i'm anne-marie green. we begin with efforts to ease the panic buying of gasoline after a cyber attack shut down a major pipeline. some states in the south have declared emergencies as drivers rush to fill up their tanks. more than 1,000 gas stations in the southeast reported running out of fuel, and the biden administration is urging people to calm down and not hoard gas. laura podesta is in new york. when do officials think this pipeline will be restored? >> reporter: good morning. the owner of the pipeline said earlier this week that he hopes to have it fully back up and running by the end of week. t s the southeasfric b >> i think we're going to go on a wild goose chase. >> this is worse than a hurricane. >> reporter: long lines like this are adding to problems at gas stations around the southeast. >> it's not that we have a gasoline shortage, it's that we

have this supply crunch and that things will be back to normal soon. >> reporter: the energy department waived some environmental and safety rules to speed up fuel deliveries. >> we put a stop to the can sales today. people were coming in and trying to buy, you know, five and ten cans worth of gasoline, just hoarding it. >> reporter: the panic buying became after a ransomware attack targeted colonial pipeline friday forcing the company to shut down. the 5,500 mile long pipeline provides 45% of the fuel, shortages in at least seven states. >> panic buying of gas will create artificial demand that will make all of this worse. >> reporter: for some, the rush to buy fuel is conjuring up memories of stocking up on supplies at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. >> i'm thinking the best scenario is to have everybody stay at home, which we are staying home, right? >> it reminds me of last march when everybody was going crazy bying up food.

>> reporter: officials say they have no tolerance for price gauging like what happened at this virginia gas station. >> $2.99, now's $5.99, now $6.59. >> reporter: colonial expects to be up and running by the end of the week. virginia, north carolina, georgia, and florida have all declared states of emergency. and american airlines says that it's adding stops to some long-haul flights so that planes can refuel in places other than the southeast. anne-marie? >> wow. laura podesta in new york. thank you so much. so breaking overnight, there raelalestians.ks between israel carried out dozens of air strikes targeting gaza this morning. it is the latest and some of the

worst outbreaks in violence in a decade. the death toll has risen to at least 40. elizabeth palmer with the latest. >> reporter: just after 9:00, rockets fired in gaza lit up the sky over tel aviv. down on the ground, sirens wailed and people ran for cover. one woman was killed in the attack. prime minister benjamin netanyahu warned that hamas and islamic jihad would pay a heavy price. the palestinian citizens of gaza have already paid a heavy price. all day israeli air strikes pounded the territory. officially targeting military installations. but civilian bin were 220 people were injured in retaliation, hamas rained more than 400 rockets down on israel. the damage was limited by israeli interceptor rockets, the so-called iron dome which blew most of them to pieces before

they landed. there are now international calls for a cease-fire, but as islamic jihad members vowed revenge for the deaths of three of their commanders, there appears to be a fierce determination on both sides to fight on. the united states and egypt are using their considerable diplomatic muscle to try and calm this situation before it gets any more lethal. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, london. house republicans will vote today on whether to oust liz cheney from her leadership role. the congresswoman delivered a defiant speech on the house floor last night. cheney said the nation was facing a never-seen-before threat from former president trump. she accused him of provoking the deadly attack on the u.s. capitol and trying to convince americans that the election was stolen from him. >> remaining silent and ignoring the lie emboldens the liar. i will not participate in that.

i will not sit back and watch i party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former president's crusade to undermine our democracy. >> cheney was one of ten republicans who voted to impeach mr. trump after january's attack. he was acquitted in the gop-controlled senate. a cdc advisory panel today is expected to approve pfizer's covid shot for kids 12 to 15. they could start getting shots tomorrow. pfizer says the vaccine is 100% effective in kids in the age group higher than for adults. authorization would make close to 17 million children eligible immediately. >> most of my friends i've seen have felt a lot like i do, that they want to get the vaccine. >>firs but i'm encgi ildreno ask for the vaccine. i n tell youwanted te e. he wants hisife ck.

>> a recent poll by the kaiser family foundation reveals just three in ten parents of children ages 12 to 15 say they would get their child vaccinated as soon as possible. one quarter wants to wait and see how it's working. former president trump's acting defense secretary will appear before congress today in his first public testimony about the january 6th capital attack, christopher miller is expected to defend his response to the riot. according to prepared remarks obtained by the "associated press," he plans to tell lawmakers that he was concerned that sending troops to the capitol would fan fears of a military coup and cause a repeat of the deadly kent state shooting in 1970. the gunman accused in the atlanta area spa shootings that killed eight people has been indicted on murder charges. a fulton county prosecutor says she'll seek hate crime charges and the death penalty against robert aaron long. six asian women were among the dead in the shooting remember

cleared to enter the preakness, and there are new developments in the shooting of andrew brown jr. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the raleigh north carolina news and observer" reports a lawyer for the family of andrew brown jr. says video shows he was ambushed by sheriff's deputies firing repeatedly. the 42-year-old black man was killed in his car in elizabeth city last month when deputies tried to serve drug-related warrants. yesterday brown's family and their attorney were allowed to watch more than 18 minutes of the video. they had previously been allowed to watch only 20 seconds. the lawyer says the footage shows brown was sitting in his stationary car with his hands on the wheel when deputies began firing. >> my father did not deserve to die at all. he did not deserve to get killed in any way, shape, or form, he did not pose any threat at all. there's no way that this could be justified.

>> the family'la vio ear s did not start shooting until brown's car made contact with one of the officers. cbs los angeles says a two-hour police chase of a stolen u-haul ended with a truck on fire and the suspect in custody. police began chasing the u-haul towing a trailer in orange county. it continued across several freeways before a front tire caught fire, but the driver refused to stop. the entire cab ended up igniting. the driver jump wanted out but -- jumped out but was later arrested. and the "associated press" says kentucky derby winner medina spirit is set to run in saturday's preakness. after the derby, the horse tested positive for a banned steroid. yesterday trainer bob baffert said it was brought to his attention that a veterinarian treated him with an anti-fungal medication that included a steroid.

tumbled as investors remain on edge over the threat of inflation. the dow slid 473 points, its worst one-day decline since wall street tumbled in february. the nasdaq fell 12.th500 .>> partnering with uber and lyft to give free rides to anyone who wants to get a covid shot. the ride-sharing program will launch within the next two weeks and last until july 4th. the president is trying to reach populations that might not have easy access to the vaccine. the announcement comes as the rate of daily vaccinations has slowed across the nation. the number of people traveling for memorial day is expected to rebound this year. aaa says 37 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home. most will drive instead of fly. that's a 60% increase from last year which the agency says was the lowest on record since the year 2000. aaa says the worst days to hit the roads are the afternoons of

thursday, may 27th, and friday, may 28th. a first round of popular broadway shows have a reopening date. "hamilton," "wicked," and "the lion king" will be curtain up september 14th. tickets are on sale now. the announcement comes a week after new york governor andrew cuomo said the great white way could reopen at full capacity after labor day. broadway was forced to shutter for more than one year because of the pandemic. anne-marie, i was one of many who enjoyed "hamilton" on disney plus. so it will be nice to see it in person. >> uh-huh. well, girl, you got to get your tickets fast. i just did a quick check to see what was available and how expensive the tickets were -- "hamilton" was sort of notorious. it's almost completely sold out for september. >> oh, my goodness. did you get tickets? >> i saw it on stage a while ago when it was at the height of its ticket price, and i got to say i

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ it was a night to celebrate music at the annual brit awards in london. ♪ there you go higher power ♪ >> cold play was one of the acts performing live last night. other artists included elton john and the weekend. about 4,000 people were in the audience. among them were 2,500 health care workers and their guests. it was the largest audience for a live music event in the uk in more than a year. the crowd did not have to wear masks or socially distance. as part of a test return to mass attendance events.

dua lipa was the big winner. she took home the british female we'll find out later this morning the newest inductees into the 2021 rock and roll hall of fame. among the 16 nominees are tina turner, devo, and jay-z. tina turner was previously inducted in 1991 as part of the duo ike and tina turner. there's also carol king, rage against the machine, and the go-gos. the inductees will be announced on "cbs this morning." it is a big day for the nfl. the league is releasing this season's schedule with a primetime tv special. all 32 team schedules will be announced during the show which can be seen on the nfl network. the cbs sports hq streaming ntwork and cbssports.com will also have coverage. teams will play 17 regular-season games for the first time. ahead on "cbs this morning," cbs sports and "nfl today" analyst nate burleson reveals the first week's lineup of games on cbs.

exclusive access to american troops as they step up their withdrawal from afghanistan. they're expected to be out by september 11th. charlie d'agata spoke with the top u.s. general there about the challenges ahead. >> reporter: aboard black hawk helicopters we flew out of kabul to one of the last u.s. outposts in afghanistan. exclusive access to bagram air base where the heavy lift of dismantling 20 years of american military infrastructure is under way. it's now the main hub for shipping out everything from heavy machinery to packing up printer cartridges as america's longest war comes to an end and the remaining 2,500 troops get ready to come home. the commander of u.s. forces in afghanistan, general scott miller, told us it's now down to the afghan military to step up. >> as you look at the fight and the violence which is too much, the violence is -- is too high, the afghan security forces are
