up. >> reporter: they too are the few, the proud the marines. jamie yuccas, cbs news, los angeles. >> the u.s. navy is in a high stakes battle against the state of wisconsin. at issue, a statue of a badger. you heard that right. a badger. the navy wants it for a battleship stationed in virginia. here is kris van cleave. >> reporter: the uss wisconsin is no stranger to strife. her 16 guns pounded japan during world war ii and the battleship sailed into the fight in the first gulf war. now she finds herself in a battle over a badger-sized piece of history pitting the gray lady against the wisconsin state house. >> it did not surprise me at all that this is quite a thing of contention and that people are pretty upset about. >> reporter: the historian is talking about this statue of a badger that features thein 1988

the wisconsin governor's office whereisitor rubs it nose for luck. >> there are generations of people remember going to the capitol and touching the badger's nose. they have a connection to it. it wasn't surprising at all the state does not want to give it back. >> reporter: badgers are a big deal in wisconsin. in the state's early days miners were compared to badgers and it became the state animal, the namesake of the university of wisconsin football team ands it mascot, bucky the badger. the badger was part of the original uss wisconsin, but the ship was scrapped after world war one. this is the new wisconsin, built in world war ii, the last battleship the u.s. navy built and could be the badger's next home. it was crafted by a milwaukee .

very seriously. >> we have hired professionals, extended staff training where we are covering grief, trauma and isolation. >> reporter: what does camp mean to you? >> kind of like a second home. >> reporter: these siblings are counting down the days until they are back at camp. they go every year and this year 17-year-old max will be a staffer. >> does camp mean more to you this summer after what you have been through? >> i think so. >> meeting new people and being able to socialize a bit more. we are just excited about reconnecting people.
