this morning a major fuel pipeline is back on line after being shut down for nearly a week following a cyber attack. supplies are expected to resume flowing, bringing relief to gas shortages in parts of the southeast. colonial pipeline restarted operations yesterday evening. during the shutdown it's estimated panicked drivers emptied gas pumps at more than 10,000 stations. in one case, two drivers got into a fight after arguing over their spots in line. both were charged with assault. all this comes as the national average for a gallon of gas topped $3 for the first time in seven years. laura podesta is tracking the latest developments from new york. laura, when is supply expected to get back to normal? >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. according to the company, several days. colonial pipeline said that its employees have been working around the clock, and they will continue to work nonstop to

bring deliveries of gas, diesel, certairkets to continue to .how see interruptions.io wednesday t said it will be several days before fuel deliveries return to normal. >> i've never seen anything like this. >> reporter: until then the southeast can expect a gas shortage to continue with drivers searching -- >> not this one -- >> reporter: and waiting in long lines to fill up their cars. >> like the toilet paper fiasco all over again. >> reporter: tensions are high. >> there might be a shoot-out to try to get gas. >> reporter: these two people in north carolina were charged with assault after an argument over their spots in line. gusbuddy.com says more than 70% of gas stations in the state are without fuel. >> people run out and hoard, that's going to mean less fuel for people that are very much needed. thinking first responders, frontline workers who need to get to work because once it's out it's out.

>> reporter: the frenzy began after a ransomware attack targeted the pipeline company forcing the company which delivers 40% of the fuel to much of the east coast to shut the pipeline down. gas buddy's patrick de haan says the spike in prices has more to do with americans emerging from the coronavirus pandemic than the shutdown. >> there's a very small amount that prices have gone up because of the pipeline, maybe a penny or two. and that's likely as bad as it's going to get. >> reporter: according to aaa, the average national price for gas is above $3 a gallon for the first time since 2014. president biden is going to be talking about the gas shortage at the white house this morning. that's expected at 11:30. and we can also expect him to use this as an opportunity to try and convince congress to pass his infrastructure bill. we should also mention, anne-marie, that yesterday he signed an executive order aimed at boosting our country's cybersecurity defenses.

>> all right. laura podesta in new york. thank you. there was new violence in the middle east overnight. israel stepped up its attacks against hamas, and there are no signs of letting up. large explosions rocked gaza city. at least ten senior hamas major -- military figures were killed yesterday while the overall death toll rose to 74 people. american, united, and delta have suspended flights to tel aviv for some time. the biden administration is sending an envoy to the middle east in hopes of brokering a cease-fire. imtiaz tyab has the latest from tel aviv. >> reporter: israel's air power on full display.

as gaza's tallest building turned to rubble in an instant. it followed yet another day of tit for tat attacks where hamas fires its crude rockets indiscriminately into israeli territory only to be met with the full force of israel's sophisticated weaponry. the death toll is rising on both sides with civilians caught in the middle like feras al ghoul. you must be terrified. >> it is. >> reporter: originally from dallas, he's trapped inside gaza with his pregnant wife. >> deep down, you know, she wants what's best for me. >> reporter: is that an air strike? >> that is an air strike, yes. >> reporter: wow. i heard two large bangs. a different terror is unfolding across israel. here in bat yam, an arabb israeli man is beaten by jewish israelis, while in places like lod and akher, it's neighbor versus neighbor, attacking each other's homes, businesses, and places of worship.

expected to be elise stefanik of upstate new york. the vote could happen as early as tomorrow. and some big is developments in the race to get americans vaccinated against covid. a cdc advisory panel yesterday endorsed pfizer's vaccine for use in kids ages 12 to 15. that's nearly 17 million more americans. they can start getting inoculated today. meantime, ohio governor mike dewine is offering a unique incentive for folks to get the shot. he said the state is organizing a lottery that will award five vaccinated residents $1 million each. >> the ohio department of health will be the sponsoring agency for the drawings, and the ohio lottery will conduct them. the money will come from existing federal coronavirus relief funds. >> ahead on "cbs this morning," we will talk with governor dewine about this major incentive, including another lottery that will offer full-ride scholarships for vaccinated high school students ming uidair collision.

small planes collided in midair, both landed safely, but one suffered serious damage and was nearly ripped in half. authorities say the planes were getting ready to land at a small airport outside denver yesterday when they hit. one was a cargo aircraft owned by key lime air. only the pilot was on board. the other plane carrying the pilot and a passenger deployed a parachute to land safely in a state park. amazingly no one was hurt. the "houston chronicle" says the man linked to a missing tiger is out on bond. 26-year-old victor cuevas was released from jil yesterday. the pet tiger named india was seen wandering around a houston neighborhood on sunday. video shows an armed off-duty sheriff's deputy yelling at cuevas to get the tiger back in the house. police say he drove away with india. he was arrested the next day, but the tiger has not been found. his lawyer says his client is innocent. >> hpd chose the easy way out and made a lot of assumptions.

they saw my client go out in the yard and retrieve a tiger, and from there they've assumed that he's done a lot of different things that he necessarily has not done and is not guilty of just like they assume that the tiger is his. it of course is not. >> cuevas was already free on bond from a 2017 murder charge before sunday's incident with the tiger. and "the miami herald" reports a 28-year-old woman allegedly posed as a high school student to promote her instagram page. police say audrey frances queeny tried to blend in with students at the miami area school monday. they say she had a backpack and she carried a skateboard as she walked through the hallways handing out pamphlets printed with her instagram account while recording herself. security officers tried to catch her, but she got away. they later tracked her down through her instagram page and arrested her. she faces charges of burglary and resisting ahead.

parents may not be aware just how dangerous they can be for children. chris martinez spoke to one parent whose daughter nearly died after swallowing one. >> reporter: evie kientz was just over a year old when her mily almost lost her. >> it's really a long road, and we're just taking it day by day. >> reporter: kristin says five battery about the size of a nickel that had fallen out of a toy. >> even so, getting her to the hospital right away, she was in the hospital for a month almost. she was in the icu for a week. >> reporter: surgeons were able to remove the battery, but evie's throat was severely damaged. the batteries can burn through an esophagus in as little as two hours and can be deadly. >> the battery starts discharging electricity that can cause enough damage that can lead to permanent disability with issues around eating and swallowing. >> reporter: dr. ben hoffman warns with families spending more time at home during the pandemic, battery-related incidents among children ind 93
