i'm anne-marie green. this morning americans are another step closer to normalcy after the cdc eased restrictions on face coverings. the agency announced yesterday fully vaccinated people can go without masks indoors and outdoors in most settings. right now more than 118 million americans are fully vaccinated. that's 35% of the country's population. laura podesta is in new york. why are some states greeting the cdc guidance with caution, though? >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. well, governors in 25 states including here in new york are still requiring face masks in some public settings. now the reasons behind those decisions vary, but most want a higher percentage of their population to be vaccinated beif the c's rele nuidance it says marks a turning point -- fully vaccinated americans no longer have to wear masks inside or outside at most places across the country.

>> we have all longed for this moment. >> reporter: dr. rochelle walensky said the revised advice follows a sharp decline in new infections. she said the key is for people to get their shots. >> anyone who is fully vaccinated can participate in indoor and outdoor activity, large or small, without wearing a mask or physical distancing. >> reporter: according to the cdc, nearly half the country has received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine. more than a third are fully vaccinated. >> i think it's a great milestone. a great day.>>de ha the announcement but warned that thnd over. >> we'veotten is far. eaf un you get to the finish line. >> reporter: masks are still required indoors and in crowded outdoor spaces in several states including here in new york where governor andrew cuomo said his staff would review the new cdc guidelines before lifting any restrictions. >> people want to say, well,

wounded in what's believed to be the largest shooting in rhode island's capital. police in providence say that shots were fired outside a home yesterday evening. it began when gunfire came from a car that pulled up. those in the home returned fire. the mayor says the incident has people on edge. >> i've spoken with a number of the neighbors, and everybody is shaken. you know, they tell me about their experience. i tell them i've lived through it, as well, with shootings outside of my house. it's unnerving. >> the police chief says those involved in the shooting are part of two feuding groups. so far no arrests have been made. house republicans are set to vote today on a candidate to replace liz cheney after they ousted her from her leadership role. texas congressman chip roy, a member of the conservative freedom caucus, announced yesterday that he wants to become the gop's next conference chair. the front-runner at this point appears to be new york congresswoman elise stefanik. she made her pitch to house

"the washington post" reports a florida politician linked to the sex trafficking investigation of republican congressman matt gaetz is expected to plead guilty. court documents show joel greenberg will appear in federal court in orlando on monday. he faces multiple charges including sex trafficking of a minor. greenberg has reportedly been trying to secure a plea deal with prosecutors for weeks. he could potentially be a witness against gaetz who is being investigated for allegedly paying underage girls for sex. gaetz denies the allegations.

"the hill" reports senate republicans say they will give president biden a revised infrastructure offer next week. mr. biden met with six gop senators in the oval office yesterday to discuss a possible compromise. the president has outlined a $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan. republicans offered a $568 billion proposal earlier this year. after the meeting, lawmakers said the discussion was productive and they left encouraged about the path forward. >> we did talk specifics, and the president has asked us to come back and rework an offer so that he can then react to that and then reoffer to us. >> mr. biden said he was very optimistic they can reach an agreement. and the "associated press" says an andy warhol painting found in the garage of rock legend alice cooper years ago could become the highest selling artwork ever in arizona. cooper who has a home in phoenix announced yesterday he would
