dozens of u.s. lawmakers are calling for a cease-fire in the middle east. more than 200 people have died in the past week, but israel is showing no signs, however, of pausing at all. more than 3,000 rockets have been fired into israeli territory. israel carried out more air strikes this morning in gaza city. a hamas intelligence complex was reportedly among the targets. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says israel will do whatever it takes to restore order and bring an end to the hamas rocket attacks. laura podesta is at the united nations in new york. laura, calls for peace are falling on deaf ears. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. well, there was an emergency session yesterday where the u.n. secretary general called the violence utterly appalling. now the entire international community is asking for the fighting to end, but if this weekend is any indication, anne-marie, it is ramping up.

there's no sign of a cease-fire as the conflict between israel and hamas now enters its second week. this morning israel launched another series of air strikes targeting locations in the gaza strip. this weekend marked the deadliest stretch of the conflict. an israeli barrage leveled several homes in gaza city, claiming at least 42 lives. israeli officials say they were targeting hamas leaders and homes used to store weapons. hamas fighters have responded with volleys of rocket fire aimed at israeli territory. most have been intercepted by its iron dome missile defense system, though several have gotten through including one that killed a man near tel aviv on saturday. the u.n. security council convened for an emergency session last year. a number of countries including the u.s. are calling for an immediate cease-fire. >> my administration is going to continue to engage palestinians and israelis and other regional partners to work toward sustained calm.

>> reporter: in an exclusive interview with cbs' "face the nation," israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu indicated the fighting would continue. >> we'll do whatever it takes to restore order. it will take some time. i hope it won't take long, but it's not immediate. >> reporter: the "associated press'" top editor along with media watchdog reporters without borders are calling for an investigation into an israeli air strike over the weekend that leveled a gaza building housing media. israel insists it was also housing militants. and netanyahu said that israel would show evidence soon that hamas had a presence in that building. anne-marie? >> all right. laura podesta at the united nations. thank you very much. on to the pandemic now, and the cdc defending its decision to lift mask guidance for fully vaccinated americans despite more than half the population not meeting that requirement yet. the agency's director, rochelle walensky, said that the move is

based on science, not political pressure. she said if you are vaccinated, you're safe. more than 123 million americans are considered fully vaccinated. that is 37% of the u.s. population. lilia luciano has more from los angeles. >> reporter: confident crowds out and about in l.a. county where 60% of angelenos 16 and older are partially vaccinated. and a pandemic first -- the hollywood bowl is back in business. almost half of all u.s. adults are now vaccinated, but with more than 200 million still not fulled protected, the white house is intent on boosting numbers. >> when you get vaccinated, you become a dead-end to the virus. >> reporter: nationwide, new covid cases have plummeted. the seven-day average peaked at roughly 250,000 a day in january. now just over 33,000 a day, down nearly 87%. ♪

big celebrations at l.a.'s coliseum as usc graduates filled the field. it's the first commencement there in 71 years. 14 ceremonies over seven days and 36,000 diplomas for the class of 2020 and 2021. about 1,500 graduates plus guests will be here, and the celebrations will continue with twice-a-day ceremonies through friday. lilia luciano, cbs news, los angeles. more than 1,000 people are out of their homes under mandatory evacuation orders this morning as an out-of-control wildfire burns just west of los angeles. the palisades fire has scorched more than 1,300 acres since last february. rather, last friday. it hasn't damaged any buildings, and no injuries have been reported. the region has seen very little rain, and crews are relying on airdrops to fight the flames. >> the biggest challenge right now is the terrain it's in.ery e

d heuicreateire >> like it had time bombs ready to explode in flames, and they -- it happened. >> the cause of the fire has been deemed suspicious. arson investigators detained and released one person. they questioned a second person last night, but so far no arrests have been made. people in north texas are cleaning up after severe storms and a possible tornado. at least one home in the dallas area was badly damaged with the roof torn apart and debris scattered in the back yard. the homeowner says that she just rebuilt her house after a powerful tornado in 2019. >> this is trying on your soul. i'll get through it. i'll get through it again.

>> the storm also brought severe flooding into the region. one driver captured other people going through heavily flooded streets. a flash flood watch is in effect for most of north texas until wednesday morning. and a new cbs news poll is providing insight about the gop and where it stands. 80% of republicans who were aware of congresswoman liz cheney's ouster from her leadership role agree with the move. those republicans said that they felt cheney was off message and unsupportive of former president trump. about one-third said disloyalty should be punished. cheney was replaced by new york representative elise stefanik. and the week-long search for a missing tiger seen wandering through a houston neighborhood is over. india was transferred to a wildlife sanctuary near dallas yesterday. police found the 9-month-old cat on saturday unharmed after its -- it was turned over by the wife of the alleged owner.

safety law enforcent threatened and at times deonas cticid by e police department and the gay officers action league. the parade is scheduled for next month. actor matthew mcconaughey's possible run for governor of texas, and a train derailment forces a town to be evacuated. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "argus leader" reports a train derailment in northwest iowa forced the evacuation of a nearby town. thick black smoke and flames could be seen rising from yesterday's derailment. union pacific says about 47 train cars came off the tracks. an area within five miles was evacuated, including the town of sibley which has about 3,000 residents. authorities say the train was carrying fertilizer and ammonium nitrate. there were no report of injuries, though, and the cause of the derailment is under investigation. the "los angeles times" says

kobe bryant's widow helped induct the late nba legend into the basketball hall of fame. michael jordan walked vanessa bryant to the podium saturday night during the ceremonies in connecticut. kobe bryant was killed along with his daughter gianna and seven others in a helicopter crash in 2020. vanessa bryant helped out the hall of fame -- helped put, rather, the hall of fame jacket on their daughter, natalia, during her emotional acceptance speech on behalf of her husband. vanessa said kobe was one of a kind. >> i want to thank him for somehow finding ways to dedicate time to not only being an incredible athlete, a visionary entrepreneur, and storyteller, but for also being an amazing family man. >> the induction ceremony was supposed to be held last year but was delayed due to the pandemic. and "politico" reports matthew mcconaughey's possible run for governor of texas. the actor is reportedly making calls to influential people in texas politics, including moderate republicans.

to the latest cdc guidelines. among the names on the list -- costco, walmart, sam's club, trader joe's, and publix. the policy goes into effect starting today at starbucks. customers and employees must still wear masks if required by state or local regulations. now last thursday the cdc said fully vaccinated americans don't need to wear masks indoors or outdoors for most settings. at&t could announce a major merger as soon as today. according to multiple reports the company is planning to combine warnermedia with discovery. it would beef up competition against netflix and disney. details of a possible deal haven't been released. talks are still ongoing. keep in mind at&t spent more than $85 billion to buy time warner nearly three years ago. and the clock is ticking to toishe last daral tax returns. l yo paprk.

video shows a 9-year-old boy taking a joyride on an airport conveyor belt. he's sitting down and appears calm as he makes his way through hidden parts of the minneapolis-st. paul international airport this month. then he gets swallowed up by an xray machine and is seen crawling his way out of it, moving in the opposite direction of the belt. eventually airport workers caught up with the boy and reunited him with his parents. the boy was not hurt. at least not by the conveyor belt. i don't know about his parents. the wax figures have assembled. madame tussauds in london reopened today, and its latest addition features black nthe football player pierre emerick aubameyang helped unveil the piece last week. the king of the fictional wakanda universe is dressed in his signature suit, and the outfit also lights up purple when visitors touch it. the figure joins marvel's hall of heroes attraction at the museum.
