news, on the road. >> that's the overnight news for this tuesday, che thi morning. reporting from the nation's capitol. ♪ ♪ it's tuesday, may 18th, 2021. this is the "cbs morning news." no halt in the mideast violence. new rocket attacks in the deadly fight between israel and hamas as the pressure grows for the white house to get involved. returning to prepandemic life. mask mandates are being lifted across the nation and one state is even closing the books on remote learning in the fall. the fight over abortion rights. the supreme court is taking up a case that would challenge roe v. wade. well, good morning. good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green.

as the fighting between israel and hamas rages on, president biden for the first time expressed support for a cease-fire. his comments came during a call with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu yesterday, where mr. biden reiterated that israel had a right to defend itself against rocket attacks. laura podesta is in new york with the very latest. laura, we understand that israel unleashed more deadly air strikes on the gaza strip yesterday. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie, that's right. the death toll is climbing by the hour. the last we heard, 200 palestinians have been killed, 10 israelis have died and children are among the dead on both sides. >> reporter: israel continued its aerial assault on gaza today. at least 200 palestinians including more than 60 children have been killed since the violence erupted earlier this month.

this 6-year-old girl and her father survived one blast but her mother and four siblings did not. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says his military will operate as necessary in order to return calm and security to all residents of israel. for more than a week, air strikes have targeted homes, businesses and underground tunnels used by hamas militants. some of the tallest buildings in gaza city have been destroyed including one that housed foreign media. >> over 2,500 people have been made homeless. >> reporter: the barrage over israel killing at least ten, though many have been intercepted by israel's iron dome air defense system. the white house said president biden demonstrated support during a cease-fire yesterday. >> we want to bring an end to the violence we want to de-escalate the situation on the ground. >> reporter: the biden administration has approved the

potential sale of $735 million in precision-guided weapons to israel. congressional sources told reuters that u.s. lawmakers are not expected to object to the deal. but progressive democrats including minnesota's ilhan omar are condemning that weapons sale. she released a statement saying, in part, quote, the u.s. cannot stand idly by while crimes against humanity are being committed. since world war ii, the u.s. have given billions of dollars in military aid, more than any other country, anne-marie. >> laura podesta in new york. laura, thank you very much. the u.s. is marking the cases in covid cases down in all 50 states. yesterday, president biden warned those who don't get vaccinate ld payd will pay the .

his administration is also send be tens of millions of vaccine doses to other countries. debra alfarone explains why. >> reporter: president biden announced the u.s. will share 80 million covid vaccine doses with countries struggling with covid. >> we know that the america will never be safe until the pandemic that's raging familily is under control. no ocean is wide enough, no wall is high enough to keep us safe. >> reporter: the president says at least 60% of americans have received at least one shot. that puts the administration on track to meet its goals of vaccinating 70% of americans by july 4th. last week, the cdc said fully vaccinated people can stop wearing masks in most settings but many remain conflicted if that's safe. >> some people want to don't wear masks even if they're fully vaccinated. that's a decision they can now make. >> reporter: at least 25 states including washington, d.c. are dropping mask mandates for the

fully vaccinated. new york changes its state policy on wednesday and massachusetts may 29th. >> massachusetts is on track to reach its goal of vaccinates 4.1 million residents by early june. >> reporter: as a sign of getting back to prepandemic life, the governo announced all children will go back to in-person learning in the fall. o their child out of in-person instruction as was allowed during this school year. >> reporter: the largest nurses union is calling for a reversal of the cdc mask recommendations. there's also a confusion how to enforce the new guidelines. debra alfarone, cbs news, the white house. the u.s. supreme court has agreed to consider a major challenge to abortion rights. yesterday, the high court said it will take up a mississippi law that bans almost all abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. the ban has been blocked being inconsistent with supreme court rulings protecting a women's right to abortion before the fetus can survive outside the womb.

other republican-led states have passed similar bans. with three justices appointed by former president trump, the court now has a 6-3 conservative majority. an arson suspect is under arrest in connection with a massive los angeles area wildfire. the palisades fire started last friday and forced about 1,000 people to evacuate their homes. they were allowed to return last night. the los angeles fire department says the man detained sunday near the fire zone was being treated for smoke inhalation. he's not been identified. a resident said he saw the man being arrested. >> maybe 12 officers surrounding him. he was lying on the ground. dirty, very dirty. a couple tattoos like one on his chest right there. >> the fire which has burned more than 1300 acres was 23% contained as of last night. it has not damaged any buildings and no injuries have been reported. and we should learn more today about the death of andrew

brown jr., the black man shot and killed by sheriff's deputies in north carolina. a state prosecutor will hold a news conference to discuss the results of the investigation. disputes tried to serve drug-related warrants on brown last month. they said he struck deputies with his car before they opened fire on him. brown's family who saw limited body camera footage of the shooting said brown did not pose a threat. three deputies involved in the shooting remain on leave. and former president donald trump will week at north carolina's annual republican convention. mr. trump will appear at a dinner june 5th in greenville. the speech will be closed to the media. the former president has kept a relatively low profile since leaving office. in april, he spoke to a group of republican donors at his mar-a-lago estate in florida. coming up a small plane crashed in the mountains. what happened to the people on board. and barred from belmont, w k

put your running shoes on the new york city marathon is back. governor andrew cuomo made the announcement yesterday as the state eases covid restrictions. will there will be a limited field for 33,000 runners which is scheduled for november. it was cancelled last year because of the coronavirus. runners will have to show a negative covid test or proof of the vaccine. back in 2019, more than 53,000 people took part in the marathon. on the "cbs moneywatch," child tax credit payments are going out soon and target is offering same-day delivery for alcoholic drinks. diane king hall is in new york with those stories and morning. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie.

markets are waiting for notes from the policy meeting which could shed light on outlooks. a higher open, yesterday, the dow lost 54 points, the nasdaq dropped 50 and the s&p 500 shed 10. 39 million families will be getting monthly child payments starting mid-july through the end of the year. it's part of president biden's american rescue plan. eligible families will receive up to $300 a month for every child under age 6. they'll get $250 for ages 6 to 17. the biden administration says the new law covers 66% of children in the u.s. cryptocurrency scams are on the rise as the popularity of digital currency grows. the ftc says americans have lost more than $80 million since october. that's acr000% from the fall of 2019. the average loss is about 1900 bucks. the ftc says the losses are taking place as more people try to understand what into the spirit.s all about.tas

overnight, israel and hamas militants unleashed new air strikes. and president biden said the u.s. will share an additional 20 million doses of coronavirus vaccines with other countries. that's on top of the administration's prior mrso sai foe me t pandemic started. help wanted signs are up from coast to coast, as america emerges from covid shutdowns. but there are few takers, as millions of jobs go unfilled. jamie yuccas reports. >> reporter: the customers are starting to come back to this diner. but owner frances tarrio says the people who serve them are not. tarrio struggled to stay open during the early days of the pandemic laying off 100 employees. now that things are improving she's trying to hire her workers back but can't fill the job. >> we're owe understaffed it's unbelievable.
