we begin with the uncertain future of a bill creating a bipartisan commission to investigate january's deadly insurrection at the capitol. yesterday the house voted 252-175 to form the panel, but it's unclear if it has enough republican support in the senate. laura podesta is in new york. there was some republican support for the commission in the house, though. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. that's right. liz cheney of wyoming, adam kinzinger of illinois, and tom rice of south carolina among the 35 republicans who broke ranks and voted for this bill which will create the commission. it now heads to the senate, and if passed it will be a year-long investigation into what happened on january 6th in order to prevent this sort of attack from happening again. >> the bill is passed. >> reporter: 35 house republicans joined with de pass a 9/11-style commission to investigate the

january 6th assault on the u.s. capitol. >> this is about facts. it's not partisan politics. >> reporter: the commission would be equally divided between republicans and democrats. each with subpoena power and with a direction to complete its work by the end of the year. >> holy cow -- >> reporter: ohio democrat tim ryan scolded the 175 republicans who voted against the bill. >> we have people scaling the capitol, hitting the capitol police with lead pipes across the head, and we can't get bipartisanship. >> reporter: republicans wanted the commission to also look at the violence stemming from last summer's social justice protests. >> why is it that there is no willingness to look into all of the riots and the arson and the violence and the burning? >> reporter: senate majority leader chuck schumer promised to bring the bill to a vote. >> getting at the truth is more >> repte ten republicans are

needed to overcome a gop filibuster. >> i'm disinclined to be supportive, that's my disposition. >> reporter: the fbi is still trying to track down suspects. yesterday it released new videos in hopes the public can identify people taking part in the assault. the family of capitol police officer howard lebengood, one of two police officers who died by suicide by following the attacks, said that they are in support of the commission. today the house takes up a bill to increase capitol hill security by $1.9 billion. anne-marie? >> wow. laura podesta in new york. thank you so much. a texas man convicted of beating his 83-year-old great aunt to death was executed by lethal injection. quintin jones was put to death last night at the state penitentiary in huntsville. prosecutors said he brutally

killed the woman with a bat in 1999 and took $30 from her purse to buy drugs. the execution was carried out without members of the media present as is customary because waiting reporters were not notified ahead of time. a prison spokesman apologized for the error. the latest round of fighting between israel and hamas is entering day number 11. media reports in israel say a cease-fire could happen as early tomorrow, but until there's an agreement, israel's air assault continues on gaza. a large explosion rocked gaza yesterday. an air strike reportedly hit the home of a former hamas commander. the white house says president biden told israel's prime minister that he expects a significant deescalation on a but benjamin netanyahu vowed the fighting will continue until peace and security are restored.

>> we are engaged right now in forceful deterrents. we're doing that while doing our utmost to avoid civilian casualties. >> israeli officials say at least a dozen people have been killed as a result of hamas rocket fire. while officials in gaza report more than 228 dead from israeli air strikes. two former colorado police officers are now facing criminal charges in connection with a violent arrest last year of a 73-year-old woman with dementia. police body cam video captured what happened. warning, the video may be disturbing to some. >> do you need to be arrested right now? no, no, no. okay. let's stop. come on -- come on. >> i'm going home. >> one of the officers can be seen grabbing the woman's arm and pushing her to the ground. the grandmother of nine was walking home after being accused of stealing about $14 worth of items from a walmart. one officer was charged with several crimes including second-degree assault.

the other is accused of failing to stop or report the use of force. the woman's daughter says that the charges do not go far enough.ey'rabovlaw, and they're the ones that are supposed to be protecting all of us. i just want justice for my mom. >> a federal lawsuit filed by the woman's family says she suffered a dislocated shoulder. and the nation's top expert on infectious diseases, dr. anthony fauci, is trying to clear up confusion about whether americans still need to wear masks. it comes after new guidance from the cdc saying fully vaccinated people can go most places inside and outside without a mask. >> i think people are misinterpreting, thinking this is a removal of a mask mandate for everyone. it's that people who are not vaccinated should continue to

wear masks and should get vaccinated. >> businesses across the country are struggling with how to enforce the rules and determine who's been vaccinated. >> you don't know. we really are just asking our customers to use their best judgment and to really come in if they are vaccinated, and we hope that will be the case. >> you could easily print up a fake card or borrow somebody else's. people account easily lie. i don't feel comfortable with it at all. >> the latest figures from the cdc show more than 125 million americans have been fully vaccinated. that's more than 37% of the u.s. population. meanwhile, britain's prince william tweeted that he received his first vaccine shot on tuesday. the 38-year-old who contracted the virus last year posted a photo. it's unclear which vaccine he received. coming up, ford unveils an all-electric version of its popular pickup truck.

reports ceo of colonial pipeline explained why his company paid $4.4 million to hackers. joseph blout said he authorized the bitcoin ransom payment because the company did not know how badly the cyberattack had breached its systems and how long it would take to bring the pipeline back. the operator of the largest fuel pipeline took its system off line after it learned of the attack this month. fuel supplies along the east coast were shut down for nearly a week before the pipeline was restarted. "tulsa world" says the three last-known survivors of the 1921 tulsa, oklahoma, race massacre including a 107-year-old woman testified before a congressional subcommittee. 100 years ago a white mob attacked the all-black greenwood neighborhood. hundreds were killed, and more weted anburned.s andin 107-year-old viola fletcher was 6 years old when her family fled one of the worst racial attacks
