anne-marie green. this morning the number of new covid infections in the u.s. is at the lowest point in nearly a year. the decline comes as more people continue to get vaccinated, but the cdc is investigating a possible rare side effect found in a small number of teens and young adults shortly after their second shot. laura podesta is tracking the latest from new york. so what is the agency looking into? >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. well, emphasis on the word "rare." a few teens have experienced myocarditis, an inflation of the heart muscle. the cdc did not specify the number of teens that have come down with this condition but did we ncoater trement, there the seven-day average for new coronavirus cases in the u.s. is less than 30,000. about a tenth of what it was at the january peak.

these massachusetts high schoolers can thank the vaccine for their senior prom. >> i believe it was 71% of our seniors as of monday have been vaccinated. >> reporter: in nine states, at least 70% of adults are partially vaccinated. in ten others, mostly in the south, less than half have gotten one dose. >> we've all been concerned about this new variant. >> reporter: british health officials found the vaccines are effective against a variant first discovered in india which is circulating in the u.s. >> the message for everybody watching this which comes from this data is that getting the second jab is vital. ar rd saaccinatingmiologist dr. themn.ople now requires chg >> going to community centers, going to farmers markets, whatever it is, but going to where the people are. >> reporter: the cdc is investigating some rare cases of heart inflammation among vaccinated teens and young adults.

>> these are complications that were not totally unexpected, but are very, very rare and manageable. whereas i can't emphasize it enough -- the virus can be deadly. >> reporter: the health agency has not found more cases than expected in the general population and still encourages everyone 12 and older to get vaccinated. the cdc says the complications are more common in men than women, and usually show up four days after the second dose of the moderna or pfizer vaccines. anne-marie? >> all right, laura podesta, thank you so much. authorities in california are offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a suspect in a road-rage shooting that left a 6-year-old boy dead. aidan laos' mom said she was driving to school when a white volkswagen cut her off on the 55 freeway in orange.

the driver then slipped behind her and someone in the vehicle fired a shot. the victim's sister said the bullet cut through the trunk and then hit the boy. >> and he said, "mommy, my tummy hurts." she picked him up, and he was bleeding on her. she had blood on her clothes. >> authorities are asking anyone with information to call them immediately. u.s. secretary of state antony blinken will head to the middle east this week as the cease-fire between israel and hamas continues to hold. new drone footage shows the destruction in gaza after 11 days of fighting. at least 248 palestinians were killed, and 12 israelis. the truce started early friday morning brokered by egypt with support from the u.s. yesterday israeli police escorted 250 jewish visitors to the aqsa mosque in jerusalem. that's where police and palestinian protesters clashed earlier this month, helping trigger the latest round of fighting.

and the u.s. is condemning the actions of belarus this morning. the eastern european country forced a passenger plane to land in the capital of minsk yesterday. it used a fighter jet to escort the plane. state security officials arrested one of the passengers who's an opposition activist. cbs news has learned u.s. citizens were on board the flight, as well. european leaders have called the incident a hijacking and state terrorism. elizabeth palmer has the latest. >> reporter: this is the ryanair plane on the tarmac. after officials searched it, they detained roman protasevic, a journalist active in the movement opposed to the belarus strongman president alexander lukashenko. protasevich with 100 other passengers had boarded in athens bound for lithuania. as it flew through belarus airspace it made a detour to minsk. the air force general andrei

chinese state media says 21 runners were killed when hail, freezing rain, and gale-force winds hit the 62-mile race. many competitors wore thin shorts and t-shirts and were not dressed for the conditions. 151 participants were confirmed safe after an all-night rescue operation in the freezing temperatures. well, a tiktok party invitation attracted thousands of people and caused chaos, and a house party turned deadly. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "newark star ledger" reports two people died and 12 others were wounded in a shooting at a new jersey house party. state police say a 30-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were shot and killed during saturday night's party. party-goers ran through nearby yards asking people to let them come into their homes. police have not revealed a motive for the shooting, and there have been no arrests. says 150 people were arrested in downtown huntington beach, california, after a party promoted on tiktok became unruly. a teenager posted an invitation to his beach birthday party that received more than 180 million views. police say at least 2,500 people showed up at the beach saturday night before moving into the downtown area. they shot off fireworks, ran through traffic, ransacked artists' stalls, and climbed on top of lifeguard stations. riot police fired teargas and nonlethal rounds to disperse the crowds. >> don't you remember when you were young? you wanted to have fun, have parties. and we kind of lacked that this year because of covid. >> police want to knock our -- we've been in the pandemic stuck in all that, we're trying to have a little fun out here. >> there were no reports of serious injuries. so still ahead, charlie's big payday. we will tell you how much this nft of a viral video sold at auction this weekend.

the dow rallied 123 points, the nasdaq slid 64 points, and the s&p 500 shed 3 points. president biden's team set memorial day weekend as a soft deadline to determine whether a deal on his infrastructure plan is within reach. the white house reduced the president's sweeping proposal to $1.7 trillion, but republicans say the price tag is still too high. they're also at odds over how to pay for the plan. the administration wants to raise corporate taxes, while republicans want to fund it through tolls, gas taxes, and other fees. amazon is discontinuing its prime now app and its website by the end of the year. the e-commerce giant will instead direct consumers who want fast delivery on groceries and other goods to order them through the amazon app or website. the service launched in 2014 as a way for prime members to get one or two-hour delivery on a range of goods from household essentials, books, and toys.
