where the virus came from. a u.s. intelligence report reveals three researchers at a lab in wuhan, china, a city where the pandemic is believed to have started got sick in 2019 and sought hospital care. china denied the report and downplayed calls for a broader probe. laura podesta is tracking the latest from new york. laura, the white house is pushing for an international investigation? >> reporter: yes, it's asking china to release data to the world health organization. w.h.o. experts were in china earlier this year, but they were closely monitored by chinese health officials. at that point, they said a leak from the lab is highly improbable. >> reporter: the white house is pushing for an international investigation into the origins ofvid- >> w w shar c ry, is a dese erning

again. >> reporter: the administration is urging china to release more information, amid a u.s. intelligence report that indicates three researchers at a wuhan lab sought hospital treatment in november 2019. it gives credence to the theory that the virus escaped from the lab rather than beginning with animal to human transmission. china denied the report and accused the u.s. of trying to hype up the theory. >> i think we should continue to investigate what went on in china, until we find out to the best of our ability exactly what happened. >> reporter: 58% of americans, 12 and older, have gotten at least one dose of the vaccine. officials here in new york are taking advantage of the progress to announce school reopenings this fall. >> new york city public schools mr. fully reop every single child will be back in the classroom. >> reporter: second grader jackson is excited to go back. >> yeah. you couldn't see your friends. you couldn't -- you couldn't

penas set a dead for polre a bipartisan group of lawmakers says talks on the deal continue. u.s. secretary of state antony blinken is now in israel. he landed this morning in tel aviv, as he looks to strengthen the cease-fire between israel and hamas. he'll meet with prime minister benjamin netanyahu and palestinian president mahmoud abbas later on today. blinken will focus on aid for gaza, where hundreds of buildings were destroyed after 11 days of fighting. more than 250 people, mostly palestinians, died in the attacks. and there is international outrage after belarus forced a plane to land in order to arrest a journalist on board. the u.s. along with other countries is calling for the release of exiled activist roman pratasevich who appeared in a video released by belarus yesterday. in a statement, president biden said this outrageous incident

and the video of mr. pratasevich appeared to have been made under duress and shame fful assaults both political dissent and freedom of the press. u.s. lawmakers are urging the president from prohibiting aircraft into the airspace. and being hit with new sanctions, charlie d'agata has the latest. >> reporter: dissident roman pratasevich was paraded on pro-government tv, confessing to organizing mass riots. he was on a ryanair commercial flight from athens bound for lithuania, two minutes before it entered lithuanian airspace. a belarusian fighter jet appeared, diverting the plane and its 126 passengers, including several americans, to land in minsk. authorities blame it was a bomb threat, but it was a staged con. the hunt was clearly for pratasevich himself. a fellow passenger said pratasevich knew he was in grave danger.

>> i saw it. i looked at him directly in his eyes and he was very sad. >> reporter: he was seen reportedly deleting information from his phone and computer when he realized the plane was being forced to land in minsk saying i know the death penalty awaits me. white house press secretary jen psaki condemned the forced diversion. >> with peace and security by the regime. >> reporter: pratasevich has been in exile since 2019 after organizing demonstrations against president alexander lukashenko. a crime that carries anything from 12 years in jail to the death penalty. charlie d'agata, cbs news, london. emergency crews knocked down a massive fire that destroyed an apartment building in nashville. the flames broke out last night. firefighters had a problem with water pressure, so it took some extra time to tackle the fire. at least 18 units were affected, but no injuries were reported. the cause is under investigation. and the pilot of a military

people to better defend themselves in public. cbs new york reports that a woman fell to her death at a rooftop party in downtown manhattan. police say 24-year-old cameron perrelli lost her footing saturday trying to get from one rooftop to another. flowers and a statue of an angel were placed on the building where it happened. perrelli's uncle said he never wants to see something like this take place again. >> but if we can save someone else's child, sister, brother, niece, granddaughter, whichever so this does never happen again because it's not safe for these n id rooftopteon a rooftop. out of hand and she plans to provide legislation to provide better oversight. and the montgomery advertiser said alabama governor kay ivey signed legislation
