. breaking news out of san jose. there is an active shooting investigation at a light-rail train yard facility. we do not know if anyone is hurt. we do know santa clara sheriff's office is responding. there is a lot of law enforcement in that area as we can see from our live view from chopper 5. we are trying to get more details. we know it's on younger avenue. no word if anyone is hurt. officials have confirmed there's that inve happening right now. an active shooter investigation. we have crews headed to the scene and we are going to update you as soon as we
7:57 am
know more. as we take a look at the royswant to focus on that san jose area. there are closures because of that active shooter. as i zoom in there's a lot of congestion in anda and and around. the freeway is still moving okay in that area but i will zoom out and you can see traffic getting busy out of the south bay as you head along 101 northbound and as you work toward mountain view. there was an accident at 101 near ellis and that's causing a back up. we will keep you updated on that. the rest of your roadway still busy this morning if you are going out of the south bay. again we are going to find out more details but we don't know if anyone is hurt. wew chopr 5 is over the scene right now. a lot of law enforcement in that area. if you look closely you can see police tape surrounding the building in that area as they secure a perimeter. a lot of police cars on one
7:58 am
side of the street. we did see an ambulance earlier from our look from chopper 5. as far as the active shooter situation all we know is that it is being investigated by law enforcement. we are going to take a look at a map so we can give you a closer idea of where this is. as gianna said you can see how close it is to the highway right there. now law enforcement has asked everybody who is trying to get into that area to just stay away. this is an active shooter investigation and so they want everybody to stay out of that area. there are a lot of buildings in the area right there. let's see. if we can see it's a railyard facility. you can see that -- they are kind of focusing on a one of the trains right there 't a lot of yoth
7:59 am
beinouatnn law enforcement their gun drawn. s drawn. we see an ambulance. i can't tell if they put anyone on that ambulance but a lot of people in the area. several agencies have reported to the scene and are helping out with this investigation. they are going to stage some information for the media hopefully very soon so we can get details on what's going on. again, they are telling everybody who needs to be in that area to just stay away as they investigate this active shooter situation. if you are just tuning in, we are live over this light-rail station. this is in san jose. it's a light-rail facility there.
8:00 am
fire trucks, police trucks, ambulance, police cars, s.w.a.t members, they are all there for this investigation. this is a map taking a look at where that is. its right near the highway in that area. association you certainly want to be careful if you are going to drive on that highway and not to have any slowing or looking to just keep going where you are going and to stay away from that area. we are going to take a loot from chopper 5 as they are starting to zoom out a little bit. kind of hard to see with some low lying clouds. it looks like some fog in that area right now as we start to get more detail. . law enforcement officials responding to that scene. as you said, we don't see any guns drawn or high
8:01 am
situation there. it seems pretty calm right now. we are still waiting for the details to confirm in there have been any injuries from that active shooter investigation and if anyone has been taken in to custody. >> it's obvious that multiple agencies have responded to this. look at how many police cars lined up on that street right now. you see a lot of law enforcement just standing in that area as they secure it. a lot of police tape. now we are looking at some tracks and, you know, it be look like whatever happened may have happened in the back of this building or very close to the tracks there. >> it seems like a pretty big area that police have closed off to traffic and once again they are warning people not to come into that particular area.
8:02 am
it's hard to tell if anyone is on that ambulance or they had a gurney out. we are working on details. let's check in with gianna on the traffic situation around that area. obviously the surface streets are going to start getting conguested as they close off the roadways. the
8:03 am
avoid it asthma hole and lynn have mentioned. again it's on younger street. on first street, not to far from the light-rail facility. in chopper five. i will watch that and send it back to you. >> thank you. >> yeah. thank you for that. we do have crews heading to the scene right now. justin andrews and brian are going to be at the scene shortly and so hopefully we will get some more information as they get there. hopefully they can find out more and the media will be briefed at some time. hopefully soon so we can get more details out. again, all we know right now is they have confirmed an active shooter situation. this is at the san jose light- rail facility as gian naa said. it's near 880 and 87. we do not know if anyone is hurt.
8:04 am
we have seen an ambulance on the scene. >> we just got the news of this possible active shooter just about an hour ago. that's where the news first came from. once again there is a staging area set up so we do expect to get more information on exactly what is happening there from law enforcement officials shortly. justin andrews will be there shortly on the ground and we are hoping to get the details. >> and this is a light-rail facility in san jose and you can see, you know, there are a lot of trains there and a lot of what looks like warehouse and a lot of other buildings that could just be businesses. again it's very important to remind people to stay away from that area as this is an active shooter investigation. police are trying to, you know, secure that with that police tape there evanyone
8:05 am
walking into this situation. >> right now chopper 5 is overhead. again we are still looking at law enforcement, you know, some of them standing outside of their vehicles. a lot of law enforcement vehicles on the scene. look at that. you can see about 15 or 20 just in this shot. >> yeah. lynn is also on his way to that scene. he is hearing this may be a dire situation there at the light-rail yard. waiting for that official word from san jose officials. >> that's what we are hoping the officials will update us soon to get that information out. it doesn't -- you know -- we have been saying the past few minutes. as we take a closer look at law
8:06 am
enforcement. it doesn't look like -- it may be a dire situation on what happened earlier but it doesn't look very active at this point as far as -- anyone running or anyone filing out of that building. you know very early in the morning we don't know how many people were at that facility at this time. >> we don't know people were working there or people were commuting in that area. we just don't know a lot at this point in time. we do know it's a busy area. its right by 880. it's an area a lot of people are familiar with. this first happened but haven't given much more details other than an active shooter investigation. >> and chopper 5. chopper 5 is trying to do a good job to show us the scene, to kind of show us what may be going on. you see a lot of law enforcement but it's hard to
8:07 am
tell from there. you see them gathering in to one part of the area as chopper 5 is starting to zoom out now. kind of going away from that. we do know that our crew has arrived at the scene. hopefully we will hear from them shortly. they are just trying that doesn't mean -- you know someone isn't on their right now. >> once again our crew has arrived there. we are told but they are looking for a safe spot to set up. when they get that live shot up we will be able to bring you more information from the ground.
8:08 am
you can see that big heavy police presence and so many areas blocked off right now to traffic. let's check in with gianna for a work around if you are going in that area. >> i will show you a map of a zoomed in portion of this area where this is happening. younger street first near the light-rail facility. there are closures in and around there and we are starting to see back up on surrounding streets so avoid the area if you can. i will tell you what's open. east taylor is open though its busy. it's not far from 880. freeways moving at okay paces though i'm starting to see a back up building from slightly slower speeds along 880 itself in that area. freeways are open. it's surface street was the problems. north surface street to north first street. east heading open but as you see all that red and yellow in that area is really
8:09 am
congested. looks like 4th street is also a possibility if you want to use them as work arounds. >> thank you. we just got word from the sheriff's office that they plan to release information to the press at ú8: about 20 minutes now. we expect to get more information to reallying in out what happened. is there a still a search for a suspect. if anyone has hurt or to anyone was killed. >> there are a lot of unanswered questions. as we look at -- we have a crew on the scene. kpix5 is on the scene along with brian kiley. they are just trying to listen to police as police are directing them to a certain area that's probably where they are doing a media staging so we can get that information in just about 20 minutes as santa clara is prepared to release more information. taking a closer look at that map just to give you a better sense of where this is.
8:10 am
where this light-rail facility is. it's very closeto 880. there are a lot of other buildings. headquarters is in that area up the north first street. a lot of buildings, businesses, and just in sort of an industrial part. you can just see it swarmed with law enforcement. several police vehicles out there. >> we have a breaking update from the sheriff's office. the shooter is down. that's the most recent tweet they just sent out. the shooter is down. that confirms that there was some type of shooting and the shooter is down. we aren't sure if this was a suicide or if this was taken down by law enforcement. >> we don't know. we don't know if anyone else was hurt at we go. that is the latest news that we
8:11 am
know is that the active shooter situation, the investigation going along and the shooter is down. they still want people to stay away as the investigation is underway. >> the big question now of course is exactly what happened. what led up to the shooter being down. what happened out there that light-rail facility. so many questions that need to be answered still at this point of the morning but we know this all went down an hour ago. there was an active shooter. we are still waiting for more details. >> reports of shots fired. we don't know the circumstances and you know it's hard to say that because you just want this information, especially to alert people, especially in that area but we are going to wait about 20 minutes, 19 minutes now before we get some of that
8:12 am
information. kpix5 justin andrew is on the scene. have you learned anything since you have been there >> yes. we have not learned anything at this point. all we were told this morning was that this still is an active scene. i want to paint the picture for morng. we are here at west heading and san pedro. this is the area where we are seeing this active scene. a huge portion of this area is blocked off. police and santa clara deputy respond here after receiving calls of that active shooter at the railyard located here on west younger. you see a lot of this area very blocked off. we are still waiting to get that update from the public information officers. the ones handling this investigation to figure out what is happening. again, when we ked estionyou knone s w nyre ot id that this is still achive investigation and an ache thankful scene
8:13 am
right now. that's all we know at this hour. we will continue to stay out here as long as we need to give you the latest as we get updates straight from the lead investigators. i will send it back to you. >> sure. >> an active scene but santa clara sheriff tweeted -- i would say about four minutes ago that the shooter is down. it'll be interesting to get details on what what led up to that and if anyone was hurt in this situation. it is active as far as the investigation goes. santa clara county sheriff confirming that the shooter is down from their tweet just about five minutes ago. chopper 5 is overhead. this light-rail yard facility here and, you know, we are still waiting on more details. >> i want to read this tweet from the san jose mayor. he said in his tweet a shooting at the facility on younger street has left several people being treated but the situation is still being assessed. the shooter is no longer a
8:14 am
threat and the facility has been evacuated. i will update as more information becomes available. this is from the mayor saying several people being treated. >> we have seen ambulances in that area. the ambulances have not taken off. we just hope that everybody who has been treated is doing okay. we don't know if there were any more severe injuries or deaths. the shooter is down. we have seen tweets santa clara county sheriff. we want to check back in with gianna and look at the traffic situation in that area. so many streets are now blocked off as police get that going. >> a lot of people heading to work. you can see in the maps this is close to 87 guadalupe parkway and 880 not far from the freeways.
8:15 am
when he with were looking at chopper 5 you could see 880 moving there off in the distance. the freeway is moving at the limit. there's slight slowing on 880. it comes and goes. as far as the closures since it's close to the surface streets there are closures. if you look at the maps all that red and yellow are the portions of closures in effect. first street, younger, third street. parts of heading street as well. looks like most of 4th street may be open but definitely avoid it in the meantime. you can use taylor street as an alternate. a lot of the closures are affecting third street near younger, near first street. all in that pocket near that light-rail facility. as far as the freeways go 880, 87 are open. we aren't seeing any congestion but it could be from the freeway so may cause slowing and that morning commute is in full swing. the closures on that area near younger and first and
8:16 am
will affect surrounding streets. justin said that he was on east heading which is very close to there but that's about a block out. those closures in effect as well. try to avoid that area if you can. we will let you know if anything else shuts down in and around that area and let you know when the lanes open up. obviously a big situation in that area. justin andrews right now and we heard that lynn is on the scene right now and he does have some source that he tweeted about some information from some of his sources. we are hoping to hear from him. >> a live look from chopper 5. a view if you were just joining us. a huge police presence after word of an active shooter. we got word that's shooter is down. there seems to be no threat in the area any longer. we are waiting for more
8:17 am
information on if anyone was hurt or flinn was killed or how many people may have been hurt. any more details but we are expecting an update from law enforcement fishes coming up in about 13 minutes. >> yeah. we have been searching twitter just trying to get some sense of what is going on from either vta or san jose police. as lynn said sam -- the mayor agentsly tweeted and talked about the situation a bit just saying that multiple people are being treated and the situation is still being assessed. this is from the ground. you can see the shot of a lot of those san jose police vehicles out there with their lights on just lined up on that street right now. lot of law enforcement in that area. toed we have twcrewon the scene right now. we are hoping to hear from lynn
8:18 am
in just a bit. what justin just told us is that right now the only detail that have been released officially is that it's an achive scene and of course we know that the shooter is down. chopper 5 live over this facility for us and just the last 30, 45 minutes we have been looking at the shot of all of the law enforcement in that area. a big section of that area closed off. >> and a side note as we cover this breaking news. you may see some smoke in the air. it's a busy morning there in santa claire a. there are separate two alarm fires burning in san jose right now as well. >> i though that was fog. it's smoke from the fires. this is a very, very busy morning for everybody there in e soy. again chr 5 overheweit'srd e, know, what these vehicles ae
8:19 am
cloyees, or official vehicles. we saw the train in the shot and then also ambulances in that area. probably about three ambulances parked in that parking lot and they haven't taken off. >> once again we have two crews on that scene. we have justin out there, also lynn who has been covering san jose for quite some time. he is getting information in from his sources. we are waiting for him to be ready to go live to give you any information that i is receiving there from that scene. he has been working the phones as well getting more information. hopefully we can check in with him shortly. we are expecting the update from law enforcement coming up in about ten minutes. they say they have having a press briefing or a press release going out at 8:30. ow we dwant toa seoul anything here. if anyone else was hurt in that att n't know the circumstances behind it. our photographer is giving us another shot from the
8:20 am
ground. it does be it's not an urgent situation with you we have a lot of law enforcement another there still. you can see that police tape and a lot of them just talking to each other. probably briefing each other as to what the situation was. all of those vehicles in the area. they are doing a good job of keeping people away from the scene a. cording to justin, and brian who were out there, you know they were directed by police as to where to go and to stay back as much as possible. >> and this at a busy time of the morning. that's when people are going to work. going about their business. this is having a big impact on traffic as you can imagine. we want to check in with gianna to see how that situations. how people can get around this especially if you have to get to their destinations. i was just looking at some of the maps to get a closer view here. seeing what some of the closures and right now first
8:21 am
and younger obviously that's where the incident is happening right now. surrounding streets are also closed as well. that includes parts of heading street. parts of third streets. parts of 4th street. those are closure that are set up in and around that area. yeah this isn't far from 880 or 87 that whole area where the 87 intersection happened. the freeways look good. they are open. we are not seeing any people slowing or anything like that. if you want to use the freeway. if that's an option for the morning commute that may be the best bet. surface streets in anda under are first and young require shut down through there. i'm seeing parts of taylor that are open. that's the possibility, 10th street as well. you can see all that yellow and red just concentrated in the myl of the map. that's where the incident is with the situation and we have a lot of closures. if you can avoid the area until lanes open up. until the investigation is over. until we have more information. that's probably your best bet. these closure also continue for most of the morning and it's the morning commute. a lot of people getting out the
8:22 am
door, trialing to get to school and workw. he have alternates. taylor, 10th may be a possibility. i will continue to keep up dated and let you know when the lanes and roadways open. >> it's important as you said. 88o is right there too and as the morning commute is sill still underway it's 822. a lot of curious people slowing, wondering what's going on in that area. you know just keep going on and do not go near that area because police will direct you out of it. more law enforcement as you can see making their way over closer to where that police tape is, going under that police tape and closer to where the ambulances are and some vehicles that are closer to the warehouse. >> if are you just kuhn typing in we are covering breaking news for you right now. a large scale shooting investigation underway right now and san jose. the light-rail facility. this is where we are told there was an ache thankful
8:23 am
shooter situation. still waiting for details but we know that a shooter is down. that is the latest word from the santa clara sheriff's office. we are expecting to get more information from that scene coming up in just a few minutes so we can find out what happened. what were the moments leading up to this big scene you that see right now on the screen. >> what the circumstances were behind all of this. sam, the mayor tweeted short time ago and said several people are being treats. we want to show you video from earlier. this is -- from the ground. this is from earlier. you can see a lot of law enforcement out there. this is what we have been seeing all morning long. a lot of this them lined up there with their tactical gear on. looked like some of their helmets and face masks onto try to assess this station and then a lot of police directing people out of that area. you know this is a huge
8:24 am
facility kind of in industrial area. a lot of people probably making their which to work and police needed to get them out of there. we have seen some members of law enforcement with their guns out, not drawn, again the shoot serrano longer a threat in that area. what what are you seeing a lot of law enforcement gathering. this is from earlier when they were -- pretty early in to the investigation. we got that word from the mayor that there were several people treated. we haven't received any word about the extent of the injuries. >> in that video we saw about six ambulances lined up but here in our live look from chopper 5 there are about three on the scene. we are trying to get information about any possible victims in they have been taken to the hospital.
8:25 am
if they are being treated on scene and what exactly happened at this light-rail yard facility. >> as we know from covering cases like this, over the years, when something like that happens, the first response from law enforcement is to block off the area because you want to protect the public and want to protection the shooting investigation as well. that's what we are seeing playing out here. it's a big area and the media as well keeping far off. that's where we expect to get more information. >> we have two ground crews right now so they are trying to work on getting more information for us. we do expect more from santa clara sheriff's office in just about five minutes. hopefully we will learn a little more if there were any victims in what went on there ier th morning. reportme in tly after seven this morning of
8:26 am
an achive shooter investigation. again, the mayor tweeting a short time ago that several people are being treated. we don't know in that's on the scene. the shoot serrano longer a treat buzz santa clara county has confirmed the shooter is down. >> lynn is close to the scene. he is just working on getting him to a camera. you are live. you have been receiving information from your sources. what have you heard >> we have multiple sources now confirm that we have multiple victims in this shooting at the vta light-rail yard on younger street in san jose this is all part of the county government center. the vta yard is next to the sheriff's headquarters. we are -- getting ready for a briefing right now. we are waiting for word officially on the number of potential victims, one source earlier today said that there were multiple
8:27 am
sources and we are looking for word officially from the sheriff's department and the san jose police department. this all got started around 6:45 this morning with reports of an ache thankful shooter in the vta light-rail yard. in is where the light-rail trains come and park overnight. not sure what sort of staffing would be on scene. there are multiple agencies. the san jose police department and the county sheriff's department as well as san jose fire and if we can kind of look at the scene right here. one of the aspects that have is that from our sources the shooter committed suicide and so at this point it's more of a recovery situation rather than active shooter. they aren't taking cover. at this point it does look like it'll be a recovery
8:28 am
situation with multiple victims reported here in san jose. back to you. >> yeah. that's what we are talk about. when we saw a look over -- from chopper 5, where there were a few ambulances on the scene but they weren't taking off. that could possibly mean that victims are being treated inside that ambulance on the scene or taken to the hospital or as you said, maybe a recovery activity. >> that's right. there are multiple ambulances here. we can't really see it from our vantage point. with rebeing kept at least a block away here. the fire department is here with multiple trucks. i don't see ambulances from our vantage point at this point. if you can see all the way down the street you see the group of officers and then in the far distance several police cars with lights, that is the entrance to the vta headquarters of the vta light-rail headquarters.
8:29 am
that's a service yard that's where the trains come and park overnight. that is an achive, very active area during a formal commute time. coming out of coronavirus it may be less so than it would normally be during heavy commute times. this is the type of situation that these officers have trained for for a long time and unfortunately this active shooter situation happened here in san jose this morning. we are waiting word on how many victims there are and how many injuries there may have been. one source said that there have been no police officer injuries or casulti, s associated this. >> and beyond the law enforcement presence and of course the media is there anyone else gathered out l that may have been in the area when it went down >> it's hard to tell at this point because when
8:30 am
this got started there are only two roads and they have both about been blocked off. we aren't able to get any closer. traffic may have been backed up on 880, highway 880 which backs up to a cyylone fence on the back side of the light-rail yard. so that may be one vantage point where they may have been in danger or saw something and that area right now is also being covered by the police department as this investigation continues this is going to be a very long and lengthy investigation with multiple ve reawaiting word from official sources here at a podium that was set up just a few minutes ago and we are told we are going to get a briefing at 8:30 from the sheriff's department. >> it's 8:30 now. hopefully we get that information in a moment. while we wait can we get an
8:31 am
idea of what that area is like. we have seen shots from chopper 5 this huge facility yard. many buildings, vta head quarters and is it -- you know is there a neighborhood around there or -- just businesses >> this is the county government center. the district attorney's office is right next to us right here. the main county building is and a large parking lot th sheriff's department is there. next to the vta light-rail station. it's sort of a -- a cul-de-sac area. we are on san pedro street. the other way is on younger street. there's a neighborhood next to younger street across first street. it doesn't appear that anyone neighbors or anything like that was effected by this shooting morning.
8:32 am
>> and for those who may just be joins us give us a break down of what you heard happened so far. >> there was a shooting, a possible shooting and a suicide of the shooter. woe are hearing there are multiple victims associated with this. police and fire as well as the santa clara count a sheriff which appears to be the lead agency in all of this is on scene investigating. does appear that the shooter was somehow taken down. whether it was from person's own hand or not. we are trying to get confirmation but sources said it was a suicide as well as the shooting. the number of victims is still unclear at this point. we just got a -- a little blurb from the sheriff's spokesman saying there are multiple victims here. >> multiple victims on the scene. you know like you said you have
8:33 am
covered situations like this. you talked about the posturing of law enforcement. obviously the -- the threat is no locker there with reports or the report confirmed that the shooter is down. with multiple victims, possible multiple victims, you will get the briefing here. . >> we are waiting to hear from sheriff's county officials to talk about this investigation and what happened there this morning. they are going to give us an update in a moment and let's listen in. >> the public information officer for the santa clara county sheriff's office. good morning everybody. about 6:34 a.m. this morning, santa clara communications center received multiple 911 calls, a
8:34 am
shots fired call. multiple shots fired call in the area of 101. west younger avenue in the city of san jose. this building is a vta control center. transportation authority control center. it's a hub that stores multiple trains and maintenance yard as well. multiple deputies including surrounding law enforcement agencies arrived to the scene for an ache thankful shooter investigation. the information i can tell you now is preliminary. i can confirm that we do have multiple victims and we have multiple casulties. i can't conofficial the exact number injuries and fatilities but they are multiple. this is still an ongoing investigation. we have multiple agencies here helping us out with law enforcement side as long as -- with the county fire side, city fire department and multiple agencies.
8:35 am

near heading street. mission street, parts are open oser to may see younger first. taylor street play be a good option. north 10 wa 880 and 87. we are about 20 minutes where the morning commute starts to wind down. traffic is getting a little lighter on the freeways. especially not so much surface streets. there's a lot of activity through there. 880, 87 still looking okay in both directions but i will watch that and see if that clays. back to you. >> as the official that santa clara county mentioned this will be a long investigation. this going to go on for a while. that area will be cordned off as they figure out exactly what happened. if you are just tuning in right now. shots fired -- there was a call to melissa round 6:30 this morning. 63:34. think responded to 141 west younger this vta control center.
8:41 am
it's a hub that stores vta trains there. there was a shooting incident. we have learned there have been several casulties and multiple fataliti, s. we know the victims vta employees. >> not clear on chwastly how many victims we are talking about. the pio wasn't able to give that information but he said we can expect maybe another update in an hour or so. maybe at that point up more details on that front. let's give you another look at some video that we have as well from the ground. you can see that heavy price present there. as we get this new information about how bad this scene is this morning. >> it's a very dire scene there. especially earlier. you know earlier on into the activity that happened there. we don't know a lot of circumstances but we do know that multiple casulties and
8:42 am
injuries and fatalities and we have seen a lot of ambulances on the scene there and you know people are being treated as well. we do know that. the santa clara county public information officer said that as far as public safety everything is okay because the shooter is down. the shooter has been confirmed dead. >> you have to feel for the families and people who have loved ones who work at that facility and wondering how that have lored one is and if anything happened to them. the approximate, io is saying that family members who have questions or if you want to meet a family member that was in that building if they are okay you can head to the sheriff's headquarters which is nearby on younger avenue. family dear sir go there to get information. >> it's next door to the facility. we want to go back to lynn to talk about this new information and so tragic knowing there have been
8:43 am
multiple victims. >> yeah. this is really the worst case situation when you hear of an ache thankful shooter situation to have it confirmed by law enforcement that you have multiple victims. they have not saying how many victims there are at this point. from the size and scope of the response and the number of investigators here as well as emergency people this is a very serious event. they say this got started a little after six this morning with reports coming into the county communications center of an achive shooter at the vta light-rail yard on younger street in san jose. arriving officers did find a scene, we are told that the shooter possibly committed suicide after committing these several homicides here in san jose. the investigation is just getting started. it'll be a while before we get
8:44 am
any new information but we are told that another briefing will be happening possibly in an hour or so. that from the sheriff's department just a few minutes ago. multiple police agencies as well as san jose police, san jose fire, the sheriff's office are investigating at this point. we have know more in the coming minutes but again as you said, a very uncle situation.
8:45 am
9 crime scene will be sealed off so the investigators will have as clean of a scene as they can possibly get. obviously there is going to be a lot to go through with -- hate to say t potentially multiple bodies
8:46 am
lie around that facility. sogotobesealed o and tget to the bottom of exactly what happened. we don't have any information on the shooter. only that the shooter possibly committed suicide but the shooter is also one of the fatals in that event this morning it. will be before we have -- the answers and it'll be a long investigation. . >> which were looking at a live look of the roof and there were -- officers on the roof there. s apart of the investigation. >> i'm sure that in a case like this with the police wants is they know they have one shooter at least, they are trying to rule out the possibility of multiple mplices at d
8:47 am
bert is lyyou are eyare to get eye view of what happened. this facility itself, there are a few times it is sort of an office complex and a place where the driver's will, you know, lounge between their shifts before or after their shifts as vta light-rail drivers. there is also a garage type of facility that is a tapped to the light-rail station for services of these vehicles. next to that are multiple, mullible tracks where the vta trains will come in for the night before they would head out again. we have maybe a dozen tracks with lking about fality, probab four to five acres of facility with several buildings attached.
8:48 am
we don't know exactly where this shooting took place. most of the people would probably be associated with that lounge area and/or offices in that complex. >> beyond that complex for those not familiar with that area, describe the area round that facility. we mentioned office buildings as well. we know the sheriff's office is nearby. >> yeah. the vta light-rail train station is kind of wedged between younger street and the 880 freeway on the back side is the 880 freeway. from that you can actually see it as you are going northbound on 880. you can see all the trains that are stacked up there understanding normal times. next to that is the sheriff's department which is just -- its right next door to the vta light-rail station. then across the street is a parking lot for the
8:49 am
county employees and that is becoming the main staging area for all of the police and fire and officers who are coming in to help investigate the case. that parking lot is now the staging area. next to that parking lot is the county government center where the main county building is. the district attorney's office here in santa clara county. that's across the street. we are talking about an attack this morning on one branch of county government center. the vta station. >> we when you were talking about that park lot we were looking at a live look from chopper 5 and saw a long line of police officers. we assume investigators, going into one of the facilities buildings. >> yeah. like i said there's going to be a lot of investigators here. what they are trying to do is look for as much evidence as possible, in terms
8:50 am
of shell casings and things like that to get an idea of how many rounds may have been fired by the shooter this morning. they will -- you kn cking going through the rd ar as well he me and other facilities indoors to try to find any evidence that would be left behind during the shooting. >> we were approaching the 9:00 hour. some may be joining us for this breaking news and we have people watching across the country as well. just break down for us everything that we learned from the public information officer and what he with know in this case and what you are hearing from your souses. >> what happened was around six this morning, the first call started coming in to the county government center in santa clara county. the 911 system of an ache thankful shooter in san jose. this is right next to the
8:51 am
county government center. arriving officers found multiple havings as well as what they presume was the shooter who had taken his own life. i say his or her own life. at t the area sealed we don't know about casulties. or what happened to them. we have not seen a lot of ambulances coming in and out of here. its been pretty much what looks like a recovery scene as opposed to an achive shooter scene. the postures of the officer is that the threat is over. the threat is down. they are in a recovery mode looking over and gathering evidence and will be at some point today extracting the bodies. >> it's good news to hear that the threat is over. terrible to just think about the families out there that lost loved ones today.
8:52 am
also the ones who are still being treated for their injuries. we want to get this information out because it's very important. we heard from santa clara a short time ago and they said that for anyone wanting to meet with family member who they know were inside that facility. they are trying to get all of those -- the rest of the employees in there out. they will be at headquarters at that 55 west younger street and that's next door to where this facility is. >> okay. we are going to let you go head and assess the area out there and maybe keep talking to your sources and get whatever information you can get for us. we will check back in with you when we can. we appreciate the information that you have been bringing us so far on a very tragic situation out there in san jose. we know multiple people killed in a shooting at that facility. >> right. multiple casulties. we don't know how many but we are sure to get information in the next couple of hours as far as
8:53 am
how many people but one is just too many. we do know that victims are vta month ie who were there early. the shots fired call came at 6:34 very early but of course for vta that could be a 24 hour job. lots of people at this facility very early in the morning, we are looking at the scene right now and it looks like -- it looks like in this is from brian and it looks like maybe some family members or people coming to the scene to figure out what exactly went on. talking to some law enforcement officers. a lot of family probably wondering what happened. >> can't imagine what is going through their minds and their hearts as they wake up and get this news and don't have much information on right now. wondering if their families members are okay. we do have a new tweet from the governor who said we are in close contact with local
8:54 am
law enforcement and monitoring the situation closely but of course we expect to hear who from him as the day progresses. >> the mayor in san jose also tweeting and saying he will update as more information becomes available to him. this is a big undertaking for investigators. not only because of the size of the facility.
8:55 am
ed co workers going through this. we know that awful the victims we are told from the public information officer is that they are all vta employees, if they are the ones that were hurt or killed all employees that we are told. not clear right now on the exact number on how many people were affected by this. >> and this is an area, facility that would only house employees. nobody -- nobody would go th you know maybe vta commuters or anyone would go there because this is a hub that stores the vta trains so, yeah, the employees are -- this is probably just a shocking and sad day for all of us but especially for the family members out there who may have lost loved ones whose loved ones being treated for injuries since we know there are multiple injuries and fatalities. san jose mayor has tweeted some more information. we have been kind of going through twitter to see
8:56 am
what is being said. just about eight minutes ago tweeted our hears are pained for the families of those we are lost in this horrible shooting. the shooter is dead and more information will be provided later and we are expecting that information hopefully around 9:30. >> yeah. once again when all of this went down of course the big question was is the public in danger with this active shooter. the shoot certify dead but not confirms this that suspect was shot by law enforcement or if that person took their own life. we know the shooter is down and there is no long ernie threat to the surrounding area. >> no threat and as lynn said this is a not only the investigation as to what happened but also a recovery mission. especially when you talk about multiple casulties. investigators on the roof of though facility in the parking lot of that facility
8:57 am
and going inside. you can imagine that possibly a lot of this took place upside the big hub of the transit center. >> the shut down roads all round that area and surrounding area. let's check in with gianna. yeah we want to remind people there is still a lot going on and the road closures still in effect on younger avenue. both directions from first street to that vta light-rail facility. other street closures in and around there are san pedro street both directions younger avenue to heading street. you can see in the maps there you have seen this from chopper 5 as well. this is very close to 880 and 87. specifically 880, 880 kind of backs up to this area. not affecting the mainlines of the freeway as of right now. earlier we are we did see brake lights.
8:58 am
happening in and under are that area. i want to remind people, 880, 87, traffic not affected. all of this is concentrated just surface streets. >> we can imagine that area is going to be blocked off for some time as the investigation continues. this is going to be a lengthy investigation. multiple victims. multiple deaths and we are trying to get more information now. justin andrew is on the ground
8:59 am
with more information. what do you know >> yeah. good morning. i want to take a look. this is the sheriff here in santa clara right now. this is he on scene talking to what appears to be the public information officer who gave us the update. maybe 15, 20 minutes ago. still the scene, appears to be very active. you see police officers out here. you see some officers just kind of driving around. sot sheriff is out here. she is probably getting briefed on any information or sharing information with the public information officers right here in the area. we know that's shooter is dead. we are still working to see from the source from the police sources, if that individual is shot. this mapped at the vta rail system area. this is a county government
9:00 am
area right now. you see right now, you see s.w.a.t guys are walking around. there you go with their guns. make it clear that it was not a situation where they said this is an achive scene when he are talking about there's any danger to the public. there's no danger to the public according to the public information officer. we do see a lot of information and a lot of crews out here just basically securing the scene. this is probably going to be an achive scene for hours or days as they continue investigating this. multiple casulties and multiple victims. that's what the public information officer is telling us and that's what he has been telling us all morning. >> as you said the sheriff is on the scene being briefed probably by investigators and other law enforcement agencies. we do know multiple agencies are out there on the scene right now. not only the sheriff's office anpo
