captioning funded by cbs good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with millions of americans going maskless this memorial day as we continue to emerge from the pandemic. travel picked up over the holiday weekend. the tsa says it screened about 5.4 million people between thursday to saturday, while tens of millions of others were expected to drive. meantime, president biden yesterday attended a memorial day service in his home state of delaware. he attended the event with his grandson paying homage to our nation's fallen heroes including his son beau. elise preston is in new york. how will president biden mark memorial day today? >> reporter: the president will first participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb of the unknown soldier. he'll later deliver a memorial day address. >> here for a four-day weekend, and we love it.

>> reporter: over half the adults in the u.s. are now fully vaccinated, and many have started to return to their normal lives. >> relief and celebration to be able to be outside again and feel safe. >> reporter: in some places it looked like any other memorial day weekend. beaches were crowded, and stadiums were full. millions hit the roads or caught flights out of town. many of them traveling for the first time since the coronavirus arrived. >> no nerves for traveling whatsoever. certainly a lot more traffic in l.a. than austin. but it's been a good time. we've enjoyed it a lot. >> reporter: experts say even more people need to be vaccinated if the virus is to be contained. many are saying it's time for an independent investigation into how the pandemic began. >> mother nature's telling us what's going to happen. there's going to be covid 26 and covid 32 unless we fully understand the origins of covid-19. >> it informs how we go forward and how we prepare ourselves against these threats in the future. >> reporter: president biden last week ordered an intelligence review about the coronavirus' emergence in 2019.

some officials suspect it leaked from a lab in wuhan, china, a theory beijing has vehemently rejected. now the coronavirus has slowed down but remains a deadly threat. last week, covid-19 claimed the lives of more than 4,500 in the u.s. anne-marie. >> elise preston in new york. thank you so much. breaking overnight, democratic lawmakers in texas abandoned the house floor to block one of the most restrictive voting bills in the u.s. the democrats walked out of the house chamber before a midnight deadline. governor greg abbott swiftly said that he would call a special session to try to pass a voting bill again, but he didn't say when. the measure would eliminate drive-through voting, empower partisan poll watchers, and impose new requirements to cast a ballot by mail in texas. president biden issued a statement over the weekend. he said the bill attacks the sacred right to vote, and these laws are disproportionately targeting black and brown

americans, and that states should be making it easier, not harder, for people to vote. there's a $100,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the latest mass shooting here in the u.s. miami-dade police say three masked shooters opened fire on a crowd at a rap concert early yesterday morning killing two and injuring at least 20. authorities say the attack was not random. investigators don't know a motive, but they're looking through social media to see if any rappers or concert-goers were involved in the feud. manuel bojorquez has the latest. >> reporter: the shots rang out after midnight at a banquet hall behind me just as a rap concert was ending. as people filed out, police say three men opened fire. >> additional response, multiple victims. we need additional -- >> reporter: police are looking for the three men who jumped out of a nissan pathfinder at this strip mall armed with assault

rifles and handguns and fired into the crowd of concert-goers leaving more than 20 injured and two dead. >> as many as you got -- >> reporter: the injured were rushed to several hospitals. chad harris was among the stunned parents. his 19-year-old daughter one of the wounded. >> my daughter ended up getting shot in the middle of this. words can't explain how i feel right now. it's a sad moment. >> this type of gun violence has to stop. every weekend it's the same thing. this is targeted. this is definitely not random. >> reporter: for police it's a worrying reminder that the nation returning to normal from the pandemic means violence like this returns, too. >> it's disheartening, but it's a trend you're seeing around the country. >> reporter: police chief art acevedo warned of a violent summer and urged lawmakers to act. >> we need the federal government and both sides to address this issue because without legislation, without certainty as it relates to holding these criminals accountable, we're never going to get through the summer.

>> reporter: even before this shooting, local leaders had proposed a $10 million plan to stem gun violence which creates more jobs for underserved youth and adding surveillance cameras to high-crime neighborhoods. one philanthropist is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the men in this attack. manuel bojorquez, miami-dade, florida. authorities arrested a man in texas who they say was plotting a mass shooting at a walmart. coleman thomas blevins is charged with making terroristic threats. investigators say they intercepted a message from the 28-year-old last thursday indicating that he was preparing to carry out a mass shooting. they say a search of his home turned up firearms, ammunition, and radical idealogy paraphernalia. >> reporter: a concert was held to honor the life of george floyd in his hometown of houston.

and a player. last night at boston's td garden, a fan threw a water bottle at kyree irving as he walked off the court coming close to hitting him. he used to play for the boston celtics. the fan who allegedly threw the bottle was escorted out of the arena in what appeared to be handcuffs. the nets won the game to take a 3-1 lead in the first round playoff series. tennis star naomi osaka was fined after skipping a press conference, and the latest on a plane crash in tennessee. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the tennesseean" reports divers searched for seven people presumed killed when a small plane crashed into a lake. they found human remains at the site. the faa says the plane crashed into percy priest lake saturday shortly after takeoff from an airport in smyrna. among the people believed killed are actor joe lara who played tarzan in the 1990s television series "tarzan the epic

this week marks 100 years since the race massacre in tulsa, oklahoma. one of the worst acts of racial violence in our nation's history. a white mob attacked an all-black community leaving hundreds dead and businesses destroyed. president biden will be heading to tulsa tomorrow to pay his respects. as the city marks the heart-wrenching milestone, black liters and entrepreneurs hope to create a new chapter. danya bacchus is in tulsa with more on that. good morning, danya. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. today will be a day of remembrance here in tulsa. the community is focused on remembering the lives lost and after being reduced to whispers for decades, it is dedicated to making sure what happened here is not forgotten.

>> have we scheduled for friday? >> reporter: guy troop grew up in tulsa, but the greenwood district he knew bore no traces of the area once so prosperous it was nicknamed black wall street. >> what was on greenwood at that time was dilapidated buildings, pool halls, liquor stores, and churches. that was it. >> reporter: 100 years ago greenwood's thriving black business district was incinerated in one of the worst race massacres in american history. troop hopes to resurrect some of that spirit, opening a coffee shop to encourage a new generation of black entrepreneurs. >> i'm confident that there's a network of people that care enough and -- and are -- their hearts are right, that we'll do something great here again. >> reporter: for that to happen, troop wants the city of tulsa, which now owns much of the land here, to return property to black ownership so that african-americans are not shut

with donations. >> having a personal alarm or pepper spray or feeling equipped enough to feel more protected walking down the street is what we are -- we're hoping to achieve with this project. >> reporter: the nypd created an asian hate crimes task force last year. it includes 25 investigators of asian descent speaking a combined 11 languages. they patrol asian american communities, often under cover, and work with detectives to solve hate crimes. inspector tommy eng heads the task force. >> i came to this country in 1988. i was a victim of a robbery when delivering food. never reported it to the police. i didn't speak the language that well. i felt embarrassed. >> reporter: the incident inspired him to join the force and help bridge the gap between law enforcement and victims. >> it feels like talking to a relative that speaks the language. it brings you a comfort level to an extent that even though a victim of a crime, someone's here to guide you from the beginning of the process to the end of the process. >> reporter: nancy chen, cbs news, new york.
