consumers in less than a month. the latest ransomware attack targeted jbs, the world's largest meat supplier. operations were disrupted yesterday at 13 of its plants here in the u.s. overnight, jbs said most of them should be back on line today. this comes just weeks after a similar attack by russian criminals on the largest fuel pipeline in the u.s. leading to shortages at some gas stations. elise preston is in new york. will the latest attack affect the meat supply? >> reporter: well, because this attack happened just on one company, experts don't expect a meat shortage. the world's largest meat supplier is coming back on line today after making significant progress against a ransomware attack. brazil-based jbs was forced to cease cattle slaughtering operations at 13 of its meat processing plants in the united states. the company told the white house the attack came from a criminal organization likely based in russia. >> the white house is engaging directly with the russian

government on this matter and delivering the message that responsible states do not harbor iy at shortage.nals.ep >> if it was the entire industry, then yes, i think you'd probably start to see a run. but knowing it's one company, consumers may not react with that much of a kneejerk like they can d with toilet paper. >> reporter: last month an attack on colonial pipeline led to gas shortages. russian hacking group the dark side claimed responsibility and walked away with over $4 million from colonial. >> you have to make sure you actually have visibility into the threat. >> reporter: cybersecurity expert jason crabtree says companies need to do a better job protecting their systems. >> the reality is that consumers are going to continue to experience more of these kind of disruptions given the relatively nascent state of defenses in a lot of major u.s. corporates and global corporates around the world. we've got to demand more. >> reporter: president biden recently signed an executive order strengthening the federal government's cybersecurity

defenses. now the attack on jbs also affected plants in canada and australia. anne-marie? >> elise preston in new york. thank you so much. authorities are searching for a motive in a deadly shooting at a fire station in california. police say an off-duty firefighter opened fire on his colleagues at a fire station north of los angeles. the 44-year-old fire specialist was killed. a 54-year-old fire captain was wounded and hospitalized in critical but stable condition. the unidentified gunman was found dead at his burning home. authorities say he was a firefighter specialist and engineer and not scheduled to work that day. >> but yet as the fire chief, i never thought that when our firefighters face danger that they would face that danger in one of our community fire stations. >> the gunman had been with the department for more than 20 years. authorities have released

body camera footage of sheriff's deputies and police officers responding to last week's mass shooting at a san jose rail yard. in one clip, they are seen with their guns drawn as they run into an employee at an upstairs entrance. the man identifies himself as a worker and gives his key card so the deputies and officers can get inside the building where moments later they encounter the shooter. >> i got somebody down -- on three -- five, six maybe. let me see your hands. >> the shooter, 57-year-old samuel cassidy, killed nine people before shooting himself twice in the head and dying. he worked for the valley transportation authority for more than 20 years and was described as disgruntled. a massive search is under way for an 11-year-old boy in iowa this morning. his disappearance occurred nearly a week ago. charlie demar has the latest on that. >> reporter: investigators were

seen at the home of xavior harrelson in the mobile home park where he lived. they had more questions for the family of the 11-year-old boy who went missing days ago. >> it's been several days since he's gone missing. one of those nights was in the 30s. >> as more time goes by, that's got to be troubling from your point of view. >> with the report that we have what he was last seen wearing, a t-shirt, pajama bottoms, that was a concern of ours. as the days go on, it's increasingly more suspicious and more concerning. >> reporter: samantha rix is a family friend and says she m told her hs missing.or's >> i wouldn't stop looking for the little boy. just hoping that good news is brought and he's returned to us ore 00 nteersnd responders gatherr e centeou he where police say the bas nearly three years ago, the same iowa community rallied to search

for 20-year-old mollie tibbetts who was last seen out jogging. her killer found guilty of murder last week. >> to be right back here working out of the sheriff's office and in the same communities as we were almost three years ago when mollie disappeared, it's -- it's frightening. >> reporter: foul play has yet to be ruled out. investigators say the family is cooperating with the investigation. charlie demar, cbs news, montezuma, iowa. president biden marked the 100th anniversary of the tulsa race massacre in an emotional speech. mr. biden traveled to oklahoma yesterday to remember the victims that were killed when a white mob attacked a black community a century ago leaving as many as 300 people dead and destroying more than 1,200 businesses. in his remarks the president confronted what he described as a hidden part of american history. >> some injustices are so heinous, so horrific, so grievous they can't be buried no matter how hard people try.

>> mr. biden met privately with the three known survivors. he's the first sitting president to visit the area to address its tragic past. later today the president will meet with the top republican negotiator on infrastructure. at issue is the price of a deal and what it could include. the president is proposing a $1.7 trillion plan on roads, bridges, and other investments. republicans countered last week with a slimmed down offer. the biden administration set a deadline for a deal five days from today. so coming up, the international space station sustains damage. we'll tell you what caused it. and later, no fear. >> honestly, the only thing i had in mind was to protect my dogs. >> we'll hear from the teenager who shoved a bear to save her pet dogs. this is the "cbs morning news." a piece of space junk has damaged part of the international space station. a small section of the station's 60-foot robotic arm has a small hole in it. it's about five millimeters in diameter. it was first noticed during a routine inspection last month. the arm is still working. more than 23,000 pieces of space junk larger than a softball are routinely monitored. this one may have been too small. rapper dababy was detained in a shooting investigation, and a transgender sports fan becomes -- sports ban becomes law in florida. those are some of the headlines on the stands stand. "the tallahassee democrat" reports florida republican governor ron desantis signed a controversial bill banning transgender women from participating in college and high school sports. desantis signed the measure yesterday on the first day of lgbtq pride month. he denied that was a factor. supporters of the bill say transgender female athletes have

an unfair advantage. >> it's not a message to anything other than saying we're going to protect fairness in women's sports. we believe that it's important to have integrity in the competition, and we think it's important that they're able to compete on a level playing field. >> opponents say the law is based on a false discriminatory premise that threatens the well-being of transgender children. the "miami herald" says a rapper who goes by the name wisdom faces attempted murder charges in a memorial day shooting near a popular south beach restaurant. grammy nominated rapper dababy was also detained for questioning yesterday in connection with the incident. he was later released. two people were wounded, one critically. police say two men were trying to get into thca thegot into a fight with what they call a famous musical entourage. and the "albuquerque journal" says democrat melanie stansbury won an election to congress from new mexico in a special election.

administration for its covid-19 vaccine. its vaccine is currently on the market for emergency use. the company says it will continue to submit trial data to the federal agency on a rolling basis over the coming weeks. moderna is the second drugmaker in the u.s. to apply for a full biologics license allowing it to market the shots directly to consumers. walmart is extending store hours for the first time since the pandemic began. starting saturday the nation's biggest retailer will be open from 6:00 in the morning to 11:00 at night. previously some walmart locations were open 24 hours a day. that was before the pandemic. but the retailer cut its hours to help curb the spread of the coronavirus. company officials say they're adjusting the hours once again as the number of fully vaccinated americans continues to grow. and it appears vaccinated americans have a sweet tooth. krispy kreme says it has given away more than 1.5 million free doughnuts to people inoculated against the coronavirus. back in march the company said

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ people in london can now go for a sky-high swim. a transparent pool 100 feet above the ground recently opened. it's suspended between two apartment buildings. the bottom pool is completely see through. it gives swimmers the illusion that they're floating. for now it is not open to the public, only the building's quick-thinking california teenager who sprang into action to save her family's dogs from a bear.

surveillance video from monday shows the mama bear walking on a back yard wall with her two cubs when the family's barking dogs ran over. the mother bear took a swipe at one of them. the bear can also be seen picking up a small dog by its vest. that's when 17-year-old hailey morinico lunged at the bear and pushed it off the ledge. >> in that moment, i don't have much time to think. i run over to the bear, and the first thing i think to do is to push the bear off the ledge it's standing on. and it will hopefully release my dog. somehow thank god it works. >> wildlife experts say the bear was simply trying to protect her cubs. that is amazing, though. a wisconsin sheriff's department is thanking a bunch of cows for helping to end a police chase. a suspect led police on a 13-mile chase and ended when his car was met by what authorities are calling a moooving blockade of cows on a farm. a photo shows the cattle

surrounding the car. the chase started over a registration violation. the suspect was arrested without incident. and the youngest winner ever of the nobel peace prize is featured on the cover of the july issue of "british vogue." the cover of 23-year-old pakistani female education activist malala yousafzai was revealed yesterday. the oxford university graduate talked to the magazine about activism and her plans for the future. she won the nobel prize when she was 17. when she 15 she was shot in the head by a taliban gunman while riding in a school bus. coming up on "cbs this morning" now, the rock band the black keys tells anthony mason about their album which pays tribute to their blues heroes. i'm anne-marie green. this is the "cbs morning news."

♪ our top stories this morning -- the word's largest meat supplier says operations will resume today after the company was hit by a ransomware attack. jbs said it was forced to shut down its systems and stop work in north america and australia after it was hacked on sunday. industry experts do not expect consumers to see a meat shortage, though. and an off-dut another at a california fire station. the gunshots rang out yesterday around 45 miles north of los angeles. the unidentified gunman was later found dead at his burning home. a motive has not been released. the summer vacation season is under way, but many hotels across the country are dealing with labor shortages.

wendy gillette reports from scottsdale, arizona. >> reporter: laurel ely is a front desk agent at the fairmont scottsdale princess outside phoenix. the hotel has been overwhelmed with guests since february when more people started getting vaccinated. >> it's been very busy. lots of guests are coming to enjoy the beautiful weather we have, to sit at the pool, hike, golf, just relax. >> reporter: while the guests are coming back, not all the workers are. business plummeted when the pandemic started, and many employees left the industry or the area. the hotel is currently looking to fill 200 positions across all departments. >> i've never seen the need for staffing like this unmet as it has been. >> reporter: the hotel is offering an incentive of $500 to new hires and current employees can get a bonus of $500 if they refer someone who gets a job. about a dozen miles away, the phoenician resort is searching for 50 employees. >> we have cards that we take with us that we can hand out if we meet someone, hey, are you interested in joining the luxury
