jet. well, good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the head of colonial pipeline is set to testify before a senate panel today about the cyber attack on his company. this covers as investigators reveal they've recovered more than $2 million in ransom that colonial paid to russian-backed hackers last month. you may remember that the attack forced colonial pipeline to shut down its systems last month, prompting fuel shortages in several states and a spike in gas prices. laura podesta is in new york. lura, what can we expect on capitol hill today? >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. well, we can expect lawmakers to really grill colonial pipeline ceo joseph blount and figure out what steps the company took before paying the hackers any ransom.

it's to protect any companies that may experience this kind of ransomware assault in the future. the justice department has recovered the majority of the ransom that colonial pipeline paid to a russian-based hacker group. >> we turned the tables on darkside. >> reporter: the fbi said darkside left digital fingerprints including a cryptocurrency address where colonial was order ed to send $4.3 billion in bitcoin. >> old adage, follow the money still applies, and that's exactly what we do. >> reporter: court documents showed investigators tracked the funds to an online digital wallet and obtained the wallet's private key, enabling them to extort the funds. >> the extortionists will never see the money. >> reporter: it led to panic buying and gas shortages in the southeast. >> it's like the toilet paper fiasco all over again. >> reporter: the seizure was conducted under the justice department new ransomware and digital extortion task force. >> this is the task force's

first operation of this kind. this work is important because every day, the digital threats that we face are more diverse, more sophisticated and more dangerous. >> reporter: federal law enforcement officers say they're currently investigating 100 types of ransomware including last week's attackck against j , the largest meat distributor in the world. the doj recovered 85% of the bitcoin paid in the ransom, but since then, bitcoin has lost a considerable amount of value. so what colonial pipeline got back is worth $2.3 million or $2 million less than what they originally paid, anne-marie. >> wow. laura podesta in new york, thank you, laura. so, vice president kamala harris is in mexico city this morning, as she continues to address the immigration crisis. she will meet with mexican president andres manuel lopez

apparent road rage incident is expected to be charged later today. police arrested 24-year-old marcus eriz and 23-year-old wynne lee on monday. the orange county district attorney said eriz is expected to be the gunman who fired into the car killing aiden leos who was riding in a car seat last month. >> it could have happened to any one of us. we all drive the freeways of southern california. we've all gotten upset at other motorists. other motorists are upset at us, but it's never come to a situation of violence and certainly not the loss of a life. >> leos was buried yesterday in a private family ceremony. and canada is reportedly planning to ease quarantine rules for travelers who got the covid shot. bloomberg reports prime minister justin trudeau is gearing to ease border restrictions for people who are fully vaccinated.

travelers entering canada would still be tested for covid and may be required to quarantine for a shorter time, rather than the current 14-day isolation period. meantime, tests of pfizer's vaccine started in louisiana for children ages 5 to 11. the kids got a nose swab or blood drawn to see if they currently or in the past had the consideration and then got a quick injection. one dad said he's glad his son is part of the clinical trial. >> when you take the vaccine, you help anyone vulnerable in our community. and i thought, there's no better message than that for our kids. so to have khalil not only be safe to be able to protect others, then, definitely. >> pfizer's shot is already approved under an emergency use provision for children ages 12 and up. more victims were pulled from that deadly passenger train crash in southern pakistan. the death toll rose overnight to at least 63. more than 100 were hurt.

why a high school student was denied a diploma at graduation and ukraine got a boost from the u.s. those are some the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the washington post" reports president biden invited the ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky to visit the white house this summer. mr. biden extended the invitation yesterday during a phone call. with the ukrainian leader. zelensky tweeted that he was looking forward to the meeting to discuss ways to expand strategic operations between the two countries. the "denver post" says at least one home was damaged when a tornado touched down near the town of mead. the national weather said said a twister knocked down power lines yesterday about 35 miles north of denver. the house was damaged when a downed power line ignited a fire. there were no reports of any injuries, though. and a greensboro news and
