captioning funded by cbs good morning, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. hundreds of suspects are under arrest this morning following a three-year effort targeting dangerous criminal organizations across the globe. operation trojan shield involved 9,000 officers worldwide. they helped capture more than 800 people. they also seized $48 million in various currencies, 32 tons of drugs, and 250 firearms. as elise preston reports, authorities created a device and messaging system to track the suspects. >> reporter: it's being hailed as a first of its kind global sting operation. one whose targets told investigators exactly what they were doing. >> the very devices that the criminals used to hide their crimes were actually a beacon for law enforcement. >> reporter: the suspects were tricked into using cell phones that came preloaded with an encrypted messaging service called anom.

they thought it would allow them to evade detection. the app was developed by the fbi and other law enforcement agencies. >> each and every device in this case was utilized to further criminal activity. >> reporter: the fbi said the phones were only sold through the black market. >> you cannot walk into a verizon or at&t store and purchase one of these devices. you must know somebody who sells them and be vetted by them. >> reporter: some 27 million messages were intercepted. most involving criminal activity like drug trafficking and money lundering. the operation has already led to at least 800 arrests, and the seizure of eight tons of cocaine and more than 250 firearms. >> we have arrested the alleged kingmakers behind these crimes, prevented mass shootings in suburbs and serious crime by seizing the ill-gotten wealth. >> reporter: earlier this year security flaws were discovered in the app. that prompted many users to abandon the service which

signaled investigators to move in. elise preston, cbs news. president biden today kicks off his first trip abroad since taking office. he's heading to england where he will meet with world leaders at the g7 summit. mr. biden is expected to address a number of topics with allies including the coronavirus. the white house previously announced plans to share 80 million vaccine doses globally by the end of june. this comes as the administration may not hit a goal here at home. laura podesta is in new york with more on that. good morning, laura. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. right now, 63% of american adults have received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine. currently not on pace to hit president biden's goal for july 4th. last month president biden set a target for coronavirus vaccinations. >> our goal by july 4th is to have 70% of adult americans at

least one shot. >> reporter: with less than fofr weeks toto go until l independe daday, it appears that goal may fall short. >> july 4th is not the end of it. >> reporter: the number of vaccinations nationwide is less than one million per day, down 77% from the peak in april. >> we want to reach 70% of the adult population by the fourth of july. i believe we can. i hope we will. and if we don't, we're going to continue to keep pushing. >> reporter: cdc director dr. rochelle walensky noted the shots are working to combat the virus. >> the first time that the seven-day average of cases has been less than 15,000 since march 27th, 2020. >> reporter: as for children, more than a quarter of 12 to 17-year-olds have received at least one dose. >> well done. >> reporter: siblings max and zoe are part of a new pfizer trial for 5 to 11-year-olds. >> i can go back to playing with my cousins. right now we've only been playing video games and calling each other on facetime.

>> reporter: pfizer and moderna home their vaccines will be available for children as young as 5 this fall. >> almost four million children have been infected in this country with over 16,000 hospitalizations and between 300 and 600 deaths. >> reporter: both drugmakers plan to have their vaccines available to kids as young as six months old later this year. brave kids on the front lines of this vaccination research. now, trial results from both pfizer and moderna for 5 to 11-year-olds are expected in september. moderna has already started its trials on even younger kids. and pfizer's expected to start those trials in the next few weeks. anne-marie? >> all right. laura podesta in new york. thank you so much. kamala harris says her swing through mexico and guatemala was a success. she was in mexico city yesterday where she met with the country's president. they signed a memorandum to establish a partnership in an effort to address the root causes of why people in central

america are migrating to the u.s. vice president harris says that the uptick in migration is a problem that won't be solved overnight. >> the issue of root causes is not going to be solved in one trip that took two days. this is an issue that is long-standing, is in many cases generational. >> her foreign trip comes as the biden administration released a new report. it's revealing up to 2,100 children who were separated from their families near the border under the trump administration may still be apart from their parents. a southern california man was charged with murder in the road-rage shooting of a 6-year-old boy. 24-year-old marcus eriz virtually appeared in court yesterday for the first time since his arrest. he faces up to life in prison if convicted on all charges. his girlfriend, 23-year-old wynne lee, was charged as an

accessory after the fact. authorities say eriz fired the shot that killed aiden leos, who was in the back seat of his mother's car last month. the suspects fled the scene, sparking a two-week manhunt. >> we absolutely believe that she was the driver and that he rolled down his window and extended his arm out of the car and fired a round from a gun. >> police used footage from other drivers as well as surveillance cameras to find the white vw sports wagon. and the wife of convicted mexican drug lord el chapo is expected to plead guilty to helping him run his multinational empire. emma coronel aispuro is expected to appear in federal court in washington tomorrow. the 31-year-old was arrested on drug trarafficking chaharges at dulles i internationalal airpor februauary. prosecutors say that she worked withth her husbandnd joaquin gu, to help run his multibillion dollar drug cartel. they say she also helped him break out of jail in 2015. guzman was convicted four years later and sentenced to life in prison.

itit makes youou glow. looook . dodove cleans s effectiveleld cares bebeautifully.y. french president emmanuel macron is denouncing what he calls violence and stupidity after he was slapped by a man. macron was greeting a crowd yesterday in a small town in southern france when the man slapped him. the man appeared to shout "down with macron." he was detained. the french leader managed to turn his face and was not seriously hurt. bodyguards pushed the man away and pulled macron from the scene. a choking baby got help on the side of the road, and a cop made an admission in a murder case. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports a

british police officer pleaded guilty to kidnapping and raping a woman. 33-year-old sarah everard disappeared in march while walking home from a friend's house in london. her body was found a week later, more than 50 miles from where she was last seen. 48-year-old officer wayne couzens pleaded guilty in court yesterday. he also accepted responsibility for killing everard but was not asked to enter a plea on the murder charge. everard's disappearance and murder caused a nationwide outcry as women shared their fear of violence when walking alone. the "richmond times dispatch" says former virginia governor terry mcauliffe won the democratic primary as he tries to return to office. mcauliffe easily beat four opponents in yesterday's primary. he was governor from 2014 to 2018, but virginia does not allow governors to serve consecutive terms. he will face glenn youngkin in november in the race to succeed

the democratic governor, ralph northam. and cbs los angeles says two california highway patrol officers saved a choking baby. dash cam video posted to instagram on monday shows the officers responding to a 911 call about a baby choking in a car on the side of a freeway. the mother said her 6-month-old baby was choking on a cherry. officer casey ramstead, a licensed paramedic, could not hear the baby breathing, so he started the heimlich maneuver. >> so just put him on my arm, face down. and did five, six back blows. and on the sixth back blow, where i struck him between his shoulder blades, i heard a -- that's just pure relief. that was just excitement and relief because i knew -- i knew i did it righ. >> officer ramstead says he felt the gratitude from the baby's mother when he handed him back to her. still ahead, we waited ever long, foo fighters hit the stage at this famous venue for its

income taxes, and starbucks is letting you bring your own cup again. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with those stories and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. stock futures are indicating a mostly higher open after wall street ended mixed during yesterday's session. investors weighed a batch of new economic data. the majority pointing to ongoing labor shortages in the economy during the covid-19 recovery. the dow fell 30 points, the nasdaq gained 43, and the s&p 500 was flat. a new investigation finds the richest americans pay just a fraction of their wealth in taxes. pro publica obtained more than 15 years of irs data. it found that in some years jeff bezos, elon musk, michael bloomberg, and carl icahn did not pay a single penny in federal taxes. the 25 wealthiest americans paid about 3.4% in federal taxes compared to 14% for households earning around $70,000 per year. best buy is joining a

runaway winner receiving 91 of the 101 first place ballots cast. he led the nuggets to the playoffs where they're playing in the second round. he was selected out of the serbian league in 2014 with the nba's 41st draft pick. he's the lowest draft pick to ever win the mvp award. actress and activist alyssa milano says that she's considering a run for congress. the former "who's the boss" and "charmed" star says she's looking at a run against california republican representative tom mcclintock in 2014. -- in 2024. she says that she expects to make a decision after next year's midterm elections. in addition to being an actress, milano is also known for her role in supporting the me too movement. a cicada is being blamed for causing an ohio car accident. cincinnati police say that one of the insects flew through an open car window monday hitting the driver in the face. the car drove off the road and crashed into a utility pole.

million doses globally by the end of june. a new drug in the fight against obesity is being hailed as a game changer. more than 40% of american adults are obese, and many also have chronic health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as high cholesterol. dr. jon lapook reports. >> reporter: america has a new weapon in the fight against obesity. the new drug, wegovy, is approved for people who are either obese or overweight with at least one weight-related medical problem. >> we have to think about obesity no different than hypertension, than high cholesterol, than diabetes. >> reporter: dr. dr. domenica rubino says weight loss from current obesity medications averages about 7% to 9% of body weight. >> people who require 10%, 15%, 20% weight loss, we need tools. >> reporter: during a 16-month study, patients on wegovy lost on average 17% of body weight. side effects included diarrhea and nausea, which usually
