in breaking news, a mass shooting in texas leaves 13 injured. the latest on the police hunt for the suspect. a deadly crash into an outdoor dining area in san jose. the moments leading to the collision aster feed diners ran for cover. confusion over mask wearing as cal osha updates guidelines again. what new rules mean for unvaccinated workers. good morning. it is saturday june 12. let's start with a quick check of our weather. it is cloudy today. normally that wouldn't be news but it is different. it is different than what we have been doing. real pretty from the top of the mark hopkins. that's over the bay bridge and here is what it looks like down 880. we wake up to the gray skies and it melts back by late morning. there will be more sunshine

today than anything else. current numbers are relatively warm. it's in the low 60s for most locations. even in santa rosa it is a warm 58. a very unique situation for morning temperatures. you may like that when you step outside. daytime highs are on the mark for average, mid 80s inland, mid 70s at the bay. we begin with breaking news, at least 13 wounded in a mass shooting in austin, texas. two are in critical condition and police are searching for the shooter. >> a black male wearing a black shirt with a skinny build and with dreadlocks, dreadlock type hair. our officers responded very quickly. they were able to immediately begin life saving measures for many of these patients. >> the shooting happened in a busy entertainment area filled with bars and restaurants around 1:30 a.m. local time in downtown austin.

the incident appears to be isolated but haven't ruled out possibility of gang involvement. developing, one person is dead and at least two others injured after witnesses say a driver backed a pick up into an outdoor dining area. the crash happened after 9:00 last night at the agave sports bar and grill on west elma avenue. witnesses told kpix that the driver was a woman. one of the people injured would later die at the hospital. a witness says she got out of the path of the truck with seconds to spare. >> [ speaking foreign language ]. >> police could be seen leading a woman away in handcuffs. so far we have not been able to

confirm whether she's the driver. police say the driver is under arrest on suspicion of dui. new, police in concord made three dui arrests overnight. they have not released details about the cases but say they will continue enforcement patrols and will not hesitate to stop people who are driving while impaired. it looks like rules about masks in the workplace are changing yet again. cal osha posted new revisions which would require unvaccinated employees to wear a mask. the board is expected to pass the proposal next week. governor newsom has taken action to end most pandemic executive orders. this means starting tuesday the stay-at-home order is over along with capacity limits and physical distancing mandates for businesses. while life returns to normal, california will still be under state of emergency. that means governor newsom has the power to change or suspend state laws indefinitely.

that decision has angered republican lawmakers who say state law requires the governor to end the state of emergency at the earliest possible date. it was a busy friday night in san francisco. this is of course the final weekend before the state lifts the tier system and mask mandates. we are days away now from restaurants being able to fully reopen for the first time in over a year. restaurant owners are excited to reopen but are equally worried that customer confusion will lead to conflict. susie steimle spoke with owners about what happens next. >> i think there is a little bit anxiety around the fact that june 15 has been noted as the day that everything goes back to normal. >> reporter: pete describes reopening like lifting weight. he says you can't just double the number you are comfortable with overnight. >> we are hoping that the public has a little patience, a

little empathy. it isn't easy to just open it all and let it be a free for all. >> reporter: june 15 is the much anticipated state set deadline where social distancing stops. restaurants can resume 100% capacity and vaccinated customers can go mask less. restaurant owners have right to ask for proof of a vaccine but most are likely going to employ the honor system. >> we will not be vaccine police. >> if you are coming and you don't have a mask, then you are saying by your actions that you are vaccinated. >> reporter: thomas is the executive director and says employees at her restaurants are worried about rowdy patrons with high expectations for tuesday. >> my manager is like people will yell and say there is a table. i will say everybody take a deep breath. >> reporter: she wants to remind people this will not happen over night. >> we need staff to give the service. just because a table is physically there doesn't mean we have the staff to seat the

table. >> reporter: they've already melt with mask backlash. >> there are people that don't understand, people that don't want to do it. we've had to be sort of the bad cop from time to time. >> we will try to see how customers feel, try to work out the mask thing. then hopefully we will be back to normal but it will not happen instantly on june 15. >> restaurants might ask to see proof of vaccination so it is a good idea to take the physical card with you or take a photo of it so you can show it to them. g7 summit continues today in uk and face to face diplomacy has been back at the stage this week. president biden and g7 allies wrapped up the first day with a dinner hosted by the queen. next week the president's european visit takes a more serious tone when he meets with vladimir putin in geneva. >> reporter: a royal reception for president biden and other world leaders who dined with

queen elizabeth, prince charles, duke and duchess of cambridge in cornwall. it's the first time in nearly two years that the heads of the g7 nations have been able to meet in person. they welcomed the newest head of state into the fold before sitting for the first of three days of talks about china, russia, trade, taxes, and covid. >> i think this is a meeting that genuinely needs to happen because we need to make sure that we learn the lesson from the pandemic. >> reporter: jointly seven leaders announced commitment to donate 1 billion vaccine doses to lower income countries by the end of next year, a show of unity and shared priorities ahead of mr. biden's meeting with russian president vladimir putin next week. what's your message to putin? president biden has described this summit as a reset after a turbulent four years for the g7

spots from china town to fisherman's warf. hours before the break in, the warf was scene of another crazy smash n grab. this time a couple's dog was stolen. they were visiting from fort bragg and celebrating their 12th wedding anniversary when their trip turned into the unthinkable for any pet owner. >> i feel like a part of my heart fell in my stomach and i just thought he must be so scared. where is he? are they taking care of him? you know, i didn't even notice the luggage was missing. i just started running around and screaming for leo. >> they parked their car around 6:30 thursday night and left leo on the floor of the passenger seat while they hopped on a nighttime tour bus. when they returned the window was smashed and leo was gone. apparently they weren't the only targets. >> walking towards the warf and

every 5, 10 feet we are walking, we see broken glass everywhere. >> the thieves also got away with a suitcase but leo is their top priority. they released this picture of the carrier he is in. he is 10 years old and does need certain medication. as tourists return the criminals are following. local merchants are warning customers and trying to deter crooks by putting up warning signs. as for leo police are asking people to keep an eye out and asking anyone who might have seen anything to give them a call. turning our attention to the weather, june gloom is back. you can see it from our camera on top of the mark hopkins hotel. it looks cool when you look towards the golden gate bridge in the distance. ten minutes ago you could see it. it's been over taken. there is a layer cake of cloud. we've got higher clouds and then more typical june gloom lower clouds.

a really pretty view looking towards the golden gate bridge. here is the scene on 880. east bay has this. really the whole bay area looks like this no matter where you are. it's part of the reason the temperatures have stayed so warm. it's in the 60s for most locations. if you look across most of the bay, low 60s. coolest spots are upper 50s and that's not north bay. expect it to feel almost kind of balmy when you step outside, especially in the north bay. you are not used to upper 50s this time of day. plenty clouds, blanket overnight will melt back to the coast by the time we get to the late morning and early afternoon. then plenty sunshine before they build back in tonight. we do it again tomorrow. we are going to stay in the pattern where we keep mid level stratus starting to fill in most of the bay pretty much each evening. daytime highs, plenty sunshine. once we are here it's 3:00 in the afternoon.

under blue skies, mid 80s for many inland spots, upper 60s in the city and low 80s in the north bay. that's perfect for this time of year. the numbers are right on the mark for average. it will be breezy in the afternoon. there is our on shore surge, gets us to the late afternoon, early evening. let's talk about the interesting item off our coast. clouds don't show the whole story. if we put this in futurecast, a storm off the coast of california but most will get pulled to our north. believe it or not even in the middle of june, this is being driven in by a moderate strength atmospheric river. those are significant rainmakers we typically experience in the winter. this one just had bad aim as far as we are concerned. it will bring rain to the far north course but not from mendocino county south. we are past that system with the light rain, the real headline in the forecast is the significant warm up coming our

way for later next week. like from wednesday, thursday, friday. you see the long range forecast has a big bullseye on the west. california for high degree of confidence in a significant warm up. let me show you the seven-day forecast. watch temperatures on the top line. 100 by the time we get to thursday. it's a fast warm up. the weekend is great and so are the first few days of this work week. by wednesday, you notice things have all of a sudden started to heat up big time. most of next week, we'll be talking about that story. i noticed as i was driving from san jose today that the fog really got thick. >> right. burling game which would sit close to the airport which is in the san bruno gap. it will usually funnel that from the coast through the gap

very few things about the giants season are what many expected it to be with pleasant surprises along the way. last night, another bright spot, delivering a gem when the team needed it most. left after 12 pitches because of groin injury. the scoreless top of the fourth, connects for his 11th home run of the season, giants grab a 1-0 lead. soto thinks he's tied it up but talk man brings it back. could not believe it. bottom nine, gets turner to ground out to finish his second complete game shut out of the season, allows just two hits and strikes out eight as giants win 1-0.

welcome back. the time is 6:29. thank you so much for joining us. let's start this half hour with a quick check of our weather with meteorologist darren peck. it's going to be a gray start bay area wide. look at the camera looking from our roof. if you look at the golden gate bridge, traffic is fine. this is a great camera to show how extensive june gloom is. it's got most of the city covered but it has the entire bay area covered. you are waking up to gray skies. look how warm it is. the coldest spot is santa rosa at 57. that's down right warm for santa rosa on any morning especially considering we had cold mornings last week when we were in the low 40s. we'll be in the mid 70s in the bay. all these clouds are going to melt back to the coast by late

morning and we'll have more sunshine than anything else today. we'll see you with the rest of the forecast in a bit. a 12-year-old oak land boy shot when he and his father confronted some catalytic converter thieves. da lin talked to the boy who is now recovering. >> reporter: the boy says this is the second attempt in two weeks. this time after the father tried to stop them a guy fired three rounds through the wooden fence. one of the shot hit the 12-year- old who was standing in the house near the door. police believe this is the bullet. >> my mom was so worried. i was like it's not that bad. it hurt a little bit, not that much. >> reporter: doctors treated and released him. the family declined to show their faces fearing retaliation. >> now that he is back from the

hospital, he is trauma. he is asking why they shot him. >> reporter: fernando says a loud noise woke him up in the middle of the night. he alerted his dad and they saw people jacking up his mom's honda accord trying to cut off the catalytic converter. >> my dad was trying to scare him, threw a rock but it didn't hit him. >> reporter: one thief opened fire on the family. the thieves left behind the jack and drove away in two cars. no one was arrested. >> i never really got scared or anything. >> reporter: the family plans to install a car alarm. they say if it happens again they'll call 911 instead of trying to stop them. this close call comes days after kpix5 revealed a shocking spike in catalytic converter thefts. monday kenny choi showed us

auto shops overflowing with targeted vehicles and how highly organized groups are stealing the devices. the converters are disassembled and sent to illegal smelters and untrace able raw metals are sold to manufacturers around the world to make new catalytic converters to replace the stolen ones. bail set at $750,000 each for a silicon valley couple accused of running a network of brothels. david davies and 38-year-old hugh were arraigned yesterday in san jose. prosecutors say they trafficked dozens of women from china, south korea, eastern europe through at least a half dozen nondescript apartments in san jose and milpitas. women together investigators they would see 10 to 15 men per day. many were not permitted to leave and had pass ports taken

and were required to pay for their food and necessities. one woman said she was there to earn money for her mother's cancer treatment. is uber's driver rating system racist? a federal judge says maybe. the bay area news group reports an asian driver is suing the ride sharing company claiming the rating system puts nonwhite drivers at risk of termination. drivers are kicked off of the app if their rating dips below 4.6 stars but the man suing says he has been marked down from customers based on his race and accent. a federal judge says the system could likely be affected bypass englishers' racial bias. we reached out to uber for comment but so far have not heard any word back. justice department's inspector general will investigate revelations that the trump administration seized phone records from democrats. trump era officials reportedly wanted to hunt down sources of leaks as officials had also

in 1955. >> he sees something on the bottom that looks man made and that's when we decide there is something down there. maybe it's the plane. >> reporter: new year's day that plane crashed near fulsome dam after a mid air collision. bodies of three people on board were never found. the body of the pilot was the only one discovered. the brother of one of the victims has never stopped looking for the plane or his brother's remains. but frank's son tells us his father passed away never learning of the discovery. >> we know where it is. >> reporter: in 2014, crews looked again but came up empty. now this technology has been updated allowing for easier search. >> i think it's a rewarding prospect to offer some sort of closure. >> it will now be up to the sheriffs office to determine whether the plane will be recovered and how and whether they have enough resources to do the job. a homeowner in placer is

sharing a story of a bizarre home invasion with an intruder like no other. a couple were in their home last week when one heard water running. in a panic the woman woke her husband who grabbed his gun coming face to face with a man who had just taken a shower in their house. >> i got to the bottom of the stairs. as i turned around, he was coming down wrapped in a towel, you know, about as surreal as it can get. i said what on earth are you thinking? it's a 24-year-old kid. he responded and said i had to. >> the couple called 911 and officers came and arrested the man. no word on why the suspect decided to break into their home for a shower. new, a massachusetts man had a very lucky escape after an encounter that he will never forget. a veteran lobster diver was off coast of province town when he thought he had been bitten by a shark. after diving to the bottom to

collect lobsters in cape cod bay. he was suddenly swallowed whole by a hump back whale. >> i jumped over and got to about 45 feet of water and all of a sudden, i felt this huge bump and everything went dark. then i realized there was no overcoming a beast of that size. >> the diver says he struggled inside for a terrifying 30 seconds. that's when the whale emerged from the water and spat him out. nearby a boat captain was running a fishing charter when he and his passengers saw the narrow escape. >> i saw mike flying out of the water feet first with his flippers on and land back in. i jumped aboard the boat, got him up, got his tank off, got him on the deck. he goes i was in the mouth of a whale. i can't believe it.

happening today, another sign of public transit recovering. bart is beefing up saturday service. the agency will add extra train trips mostly serving pleasant hill daly city corridor. one extra trip from sfo in the morning and one headed to the airport in the afternoon. bart says last saturday's ridership was about 27% of a normal june saturday prepandemic. bart will also reopen station entrances today which were closed in october due to low ridership. a covid outbreak on a cruise ship appears to be limited to just two passengers. it could be an encouraging sign as vessels prepare to resume sailing in u.s. waters in two weeks. two roommates are in isolation on the celebrity millennium and no one else has tested positive. celebrity requires proof of vaccination says this proves rigorous health and safety protocols work. a travel rider says she had to

have to use. it's not the only one. if we look at the san mateo bridge, it's just as gray. maybe not just as gray but it's pretty darn gray here. that's the way it looks bay area wide. scene down 880, that's east bay. this would be the better example of what it looks like for bay area as a whole. maybe there is a bit of an issue with fog once you get on the golden gate. everywhere else, it's this. that low deck of clouds has kept us relatively warm. we are in the low 60s for most locations in the bay. in santa rosa, the temperature is 57. clouds will burn back by late morning. there we are by 11:00. they're already burned back to the coast and they'll stay there and then it's sunshine and daytime highs like this. mid to upper 80s today, 85 concord, 82 livermore, 80 san jose. in the immediate bay hayward

77, fremont 77. the numbers don't change a lot this weekend but they're really going to change by the end of this next week. the real headline in this forecast is the significant warm up coming our way by the end of the seven day. we'll see that in one second. there is one other item, a storm off our coast. it's part of the reason the clouds have gotten so widespread. it's also oddly enough the reason it is so warm because this is giving a strong southerly flow. we are pulling in air from the southwest and that's helping warm us up. that is fueled by atmospheric river. very impressive to see that for the middle of june. those are the elements that fuel some of our biggest rainmakers in winter, late season atmospheric river now but going too far north to have significant impact on rain for us. we get a half inch of rain out this today in eureka. if we look more closely, the total accumulated rain, we've gotten light misting at the

arctic ocean threatening sea ice and now researchers think they know more why. more on the heat bombs and how they may affect the global climate. >> reporter: a research vessel moves through arctic waters to uncover a threat. >> it's melting faster than predicted by many forecasts. >> reporter: sea ice has been disappearing at an alarming rate. in 2018, institution of oceanography and team of researchers set out to learn why. >> the arctic is a canary in the coal mine. seeing changes accelerate there gives a preview of how dramatically things may change in the rest of the year. >> reporter: it took years to analyze the data but the team found heat bombs, warm waters from the pacific flowing to the arctic heating the ice. it can last for months, even years. >> in the next decades probably most of the arctic will be ice

responders can encounter traumatic emergencies on the job. that's where a north bay woman and her friend come in. this week's bay area jefferson award winner. >> it's a great relief. >> reporter: smiles abound when she makes her rounds. the 3-year-old therapy dog visits california highway patrol officers. >> she always brightens everyone's day. >> we get to as many places as we possibly can. >> reporter: for two years heidi has brought her to police and fire stations, fire base camps, and other places to help alleviate stress and trauma first responders experience. >> if we have a rough day going in, we see her wagging her tail coming towards us and it's always a good feeling. >> reporter: as a puppy heidi first gained the golden retriever for guide dogs for the blind. >> she probably wasn't best as a working guide dog because she
