reporting from the nation's capital, i'm chip reid. ♪ ♪ it's tuesday, june 15th, 2021. this is the "cbs morning news." high stakes summit. president biden meets tomorrow with russian president vladimir putin. the biggest topics expected to be addressed. massive explosion. a chemical plant goes up in flames, visible from 100 miles away. what's inside the facility and how long the smoke could linger. good morning. good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. we begin with president biden, as he gets ready for tomorrow's meeting with russian president vladimir putin. at a nato summit yesterday, mr. biden says he does not want trouble with russia, but he's expected to confront putin on several issues including russian-based cyber attacks on u.s. companies and the treatment of opposition leader alexei navalny. ian lee is in london tracking the president's trip. ian, what's mr. biden doing today? >> good morning, anne-marie. the president found unity with nato allies yesterday as they welcomed back america's leading role in the alliance, for the past four years, europe has felt alone like it was confronting russia by itself. we'll likely see more of that unity when eu leaders meet with

the president in brussels today, and this is all important in that runup with the russian president. >> i'm not looking for confront with the russians. >> reporter: speaking at the nato conference in belgium, president biden previewed his president vladimir putin. >> we should decide where it's in mutual interest and interest of the world to cooperate. in areas where we don't agree, make it clear what the red lines are. >> reporter: the two leaders will meet in geneva, switzerland, tomorrow. president biden said he'll confront putin on neighboring nations and ukraine, cyberthreats and elections meddling. >> every world leader here a member of nato that spoke today and most of them mentioned it, thanked me for meeting with putin now. >> reporter: in a joint statement, the 30 nato leaders said russia's aggressive actions constitute a threat to euro-atlantic security. >> our relationship with russia

is at its lowest point since the cold war. >> reporter: an expert on u.s./russian relations say both sides want a productive summit. >> both russia and the united states are interested in a certain stimulation or i would a freezing. >> reporter: it presents a challenge to the rules-based china order. >> russia and china are seeking to draw a wedge in the transatlantic solidarity. >> reporter: the statement did call for a constructive dialogue with china, specifically on climate change. anne-marie, we previously saw the president talking tough. calling putin a killer. but in the leadup to tomorrow's meeting, we've seen both sides tone it down a bit. yesterday, president biden called putin, bright, tough and a worthy adversary. while recently putin called the president very professional. both sides are predicting that business-like meeting where they'll act out of national

interests, work together where they can, while both sides are expected to clearly draw their own red lines. >> interesting. ian lee in london, thank you, ian. cbs news will bring you president biden's remarks after the summit meeting with russian president vladimir putin tomorrow. in a special report, norah o'donnell will lead our coverage from geneva. the u.s. is hitting a milestone in the pandemic pandemic, 600,000 deaths. president biden acknowledged it during his nato press conference yesterday. >> my heart goes out to all those who have lost a loved one. i know that black hole that seems to consume you, that fills up your chest, when you lose someone that's close to you that you adored. >> mr. biden encouraged americans to get vaccinated, saying that there's still a long road ahead to beat the virus. meantime, california reopens today. the state is lifting most covid restrictions including capacity limits and social distancing rules.

vaccinated people can go maskless in most indoor settings as well. and vermont has become the first state to partially vaccinate 80% of its eligible population. the state passed the threshold on sunday prompting vermont's governor to meet to lift the restrictions. >> vermont has met this very difficult moment from the very start. you cared for one another, you followed the science and you put others first. >> the goal was reached 15 months after governor scott declared a state of emergency back in 2020. and a cashier in georgia was shot and killed after a dispute over face masks. it happened yesterday in decatur, authorities say victor lee jr. refused to put on a mask, tucker allegedly left the store but came back and shot her with a handgun. a store security guard opened fire hitting the suspect.

police say they arrested tucker as he tried to crawl out of the store. a security guard and another employee were also wounded but they're okay. this morning, evacuation orders remain in effect near a massive explosion at a chemical plant in northern illinois. the blast yesterday sent huge plumes of thick smoke in the air, forcing 1,000 people to leave the area. so far, no reports of any injuries. nancy chen has the latest. >> wow. >> reporter: the explosion at this chemical plant northwest of chicago happened shortly after 7:00 a.m. it sent a huge ball of flame and thick black smoke into the air that could be seen as far as 100 miles away. >> we stopped water operations, we stopped suppression. we felt it was in our best interest to let this product burn off. >> reporter: the chief says the burn can burn for several days, the plant is the largest manufacturer of grease products in the country which are all burning. investigators believe the air quality for now is safe. >> everyone can see the large

plume of smoke. but i assure you there is no danger at ground level, at the plant. >> reporter: investigators are unsure how the fire got started but said about 70 employees working at the time were able to escape uninjured. >> we opened the back door and just saw the rows of smoke coming across. >> reporter: businesses and residents within a mile of the fire had to be evacuated. >> i wasn't that alarmed until more and more explosions started occurring and you can now see fire material raining down. >> reporter: investigators from the environmental protection agency tells cbs news they have a team conducting air monitoring at the site. in the meantime, local officials are advising people three miles around the plant to wear a mask while outdoors. nancy chen, cbs news, illinois. georgia congresswoman marjorie taylor greene is apologizing for recent remarks

♪ [ applause ] whoo! for the first time in more than a year, "the late show with stephen colbert" was taped in front of a live studio audience at the ed sullivan theater in new york. colbert had an emotional hug with bandleader jon batiste when he walked out. now, because of the pandemic, episodes of "the late show" were done remotely until last night. even colbert joked about having some jitters. >> i have not been on this stage in front of a live audience for 460 days. i don't know if i even remember how to pander to the most beautiful crowd in the world. on the "cbs moneywatch," the apple store is dropping the mask mandate for vaccinated customers and america's favorite vegetable, according to a new survey. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more than, good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. well, stock futures are indicating a higher open after two of the major indexes squeezed out record highs during yesterday's session. the dow fell 85 points but the nasdaq rallied 104 setting a new all time high and the s&p 500 gained 7 logging a fresh record. apple is reportedly loosening its mask mandate for in-person customers. according to bloomberg, the tech company is allowing people who got the covid-19 shot to enter many of its stores across the u.s. without face coverings. customers will not need to show proof that they're vaccinated. social distancing guidelines are also apparently being relaxed. meantime, store employees will continue to wear masks regardless of whether immunized. youtube is making big changes when it comes to ads on its website.

cnn anchor christiane am amanpour revealed that she has ovarian cancer, she shared the news yesterday on the air. >> i've had successful surgery to remove it now i'm undergoing several months of chemotherapy for the very best possible long-term prognosis and i'm confident. >> amanpour has been off the air for the last four weeks undergoing treatment. the 63-year-old said she wanted to share the information in order to highlight the importance of an early diagnosis. she also urged women to get regular screenings and educate themselves about the disease. a buffalo new york family has mysteriously received about 100 amazon deliveries since the beginning of the month but they don't know who ordered them. boxes are piling up outside the family's house. the same item is in all of the
