live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. two suspects appeared in court in southern california accused of killing a little boy in a road rage incident. new details on what happened after the murder and a second freeway altercation just days later. multiple people shot in san jose overnight. the details on the investigation. a wildfire near big sur explodes to 2000 acres. by the south bay could soon feel its effects. good morning. i'm devon feely. thank you for joining us. let's start with a quick check of our weather with meteorologist darren peck. it is cooling down, thankfully this weekend. >> yes it is. >> the marine layer is coming in through the golden gate. i will show you that from our view down the roadway. the other thing, look at the smoke. we will talk about that coming up in the complete forecast. there is a view of the golden

gate bridge with the marine layer. it is 55 in san francisco that is a nice way to start the day. it is in the low 60s everywhere else. if we look at the daytime highs for today, we are in the upper 90s. there is a heat advisory still in place for many of the in the valleys of the east bay but it will only be in the mid-70s today. i will be back with the rest of that full story in a few minutes. a man charged with murder, accused of killing a 6-year-old boy in orange county last month , made a court appearance. the suspect pled not guilty. >> reporter: not guilty pleas from wynne lee and her boyfriend marcus anthony eriz who were accused in the orange county murder of 6-year-old aiden leos. >> can you hear us okay? trophy alleged freeway shooter and his girlfriend were arraigned from their jail cells because of covid rules. deputy district attorney would need makowski successfully

argued that marcus anthony eriz should be put on a no bail hold. >> we believe that he is an extreme danger to the public. we believe that this case is serious enough that would warrant, under humphreys and all of the other code sections, that this would be a case that is appropriate for no bail. >> reporter: officials say eriz owned multiple guns and is a skilled shooter. this video is from the defendant 's social media. he is accused of becoming so angry last month on the 55 freeway that he fired into the back of aiden leos ' mother's car. his girlfriend, wynne lee, was of the to the driving. the bullet went to the child chest as he sat in his booster seat. days later, eriz flashed his gun at another driver on the 91 freeway according to authorities. >> there was a substantial likelihood of a threat to the public if mr. eriz was to get

out. because of that, i am going to set no bail as it relates to mr. eriz. >> reporter: the da says wynne lee should have a higher bail than is typical due to several factors including her boyfriend 's repeated gun possession and her white vw and her awareness that he changed his identity for the murder. when the lawyer wanted the judge to lower the bail due to her charge which is accessory after the fact. >> she went to her work. it was more stupidity than anything else. >> wynne lee bail is expected to be reduced next week which could result in her getting out of jail with restrictions. the alleged shooter faces a maximum sentence of 40 years to life in prison if convicted on all counts. gunfire erupted late last night at bayview hunters point in san francisco it happened just before midnight on navy road. police combed the area looking

for evidence. there is no word on the the dems condition. police in san jose are trying to figure out what led up to a triple shooting. it happened outside of the or a nightclub near san jose state university. paramedics helped the victims as police blocked off a section of the sidewalk. the two men and one woman were shot. their injuries are being described as not life- threatening. in the north bay, solano county firefighters put out a 20 acre grass fire which broke out along interstate 680 your marsh view road yesterday. it happened just after 6:00 p.m. heavy smoke and flames spread to both sides of the freeway, effecting traffic. the chp temporarily shut down the southbound lanes for two hours. no structures were threatened. in monterey county, a wildfire burning near big sur has nearly doubled in size. the fire broke out thursday night in los padres national forest. has now chart about 2000 acres

forcing evacuations. the national weather service says that smoke could drift north into southern santa clara county. the fire is generating so much smoke, you can see it from space. the leading edge of the plume is headed our way. a flex alert is now lifted things to conservation efforts by california residents. the agency did not need to carry out any rotating power outages. in the north bay, people were out last night looking for ways to cool off. the owner in petaluma says she relies on every watt of electricity to keep her business running. >> if the lights were to go off for power would go off, it would be a problem because we have a lot of ice cream that is waiting to be served. >> then there is the issue of electric cars. several were parked at a charging station during the

flex alert. some say they tried to charge during off-peak hours. california is having an impact on the state's power grid and the demand is only expected to increase. >> i would make the environment clean then put gas and make environment dirty. >> demand for power is expected to increase by 25% by 2035. that is when the state bans the sale of new gas burning cars. a car ended up vertical and pointing downwards after crashing into a utility pole in san jose last night. it landed on its front bumper. firefighters worked to stabilize the vehicle before they got the driver out. police are now working to piece together what happened. there was no word together on the driver's condition. with just over two weeks to go until the fourth of july, the nation is moving within

striking distance of president biden's goal of having 70% of adults at least partially vaccinated. natalie brand is in washington with the latest. >> reporter: president biden urged americans to pick up the pace. >> if you have not gotten vaccinated yet, get vaccinated now. >> reporter: while the president touted progress of 300 million covid-19 shots in his first 150 days in office -- >> 65% of american adults have gotten at least one shot. >> reporter: the administration's goal of having 70% of us adults with at least one dose by july 4, it may be a close call. only 15 states and the district of columbia have surpassed that threshold while many, especially in the deep south, remain far behind. vice president kamala harris visited georgia friday where the state's rate remains under 50%. a message important as the delta variant, first detected in

india, is now reported in 49 states. health experts believe it is on pace to become the dominant strain. >> it is easily transmissible, intensely deadlier, and particularly dangerous for young people. >> reporter: one dose of the pfizer vaccine is only about 33% effective against the delta variant while both doses offer about 88% protection. >> the millions of people who now have only gotten one dose are at risk, especially against these variants. >> reporter: the biden administration also announced this week to invest more than $3 billion to speed up development of the antiviral pill to treat covid-19 and other viruses that could cause future pandemics. natalie brand, cbs news, washington. a congressman will lead a hike where his constituents can ask questions. eric swalwell is hosting a hike with your rep event.

police are on the hunt for driver in connection with a hit and run last night. at around 10:30 p.m., police on a bicyclist unconscious in the road. police say a car, described as a dark-colored acura mdx hit the bicyclist and then drove off. the suspect is described as hispanic, around 25 years old, with tattoos near his right eyebrow and on his right cheek. the victim has been taken to the hospital with major injuries. last night, people flocked into san francisco for the first weekend without masks or distancing requirements. bars and restaurants were packed. kpix 5's andria borba reports from pacific heights where the

giants game was at a premium and fans were itching to get inside 24 willie mays plaza with a capacity of 18,000. the team was pre-selling tickets before the june 15 reopening announcement. the next homestand on the 25th will be at full capacity. >> it will take a little bit of time. we will all get back to a sense of normalcy. i am embracing a. i love it. i am vaccinated. we are good. >> that was andria borba reporting. last night's capacity at the giants game was the largest they have seen this entire year. more than 16,000 fans. next week, the stadium will convert to full capacity, just under 40,000 fans. fire investigators are warning people in marin county not to set off illegal fireworks over the fourth of july weekend. with california's dry conditions, fireworks can quickly spark a grass or wildfire. the sheriff's department plans to put out extra deputies to

watch for violators. people caught using or possessing fireworks could be fined more than $400. tropical storm claudette made landfall overnight, drenching the gulf coast. heavy rain fell over three hours, causing a major road to be blocked in louisiana. heavy rainfall and flash flooding is expected across coastal mississippi and alabama and far western florida this afternoon. the storm is expected to weaken into a tropical depression by tonight. time now for a check of our weather with meteorologist darren peck. >> starting up this forecast not with the heat wave although that will be the most important aspect of the next few minutes but i want to start with the smoke coming from the willow fire. you can see it in the sky this morning as you take a look at the view from the salesforce. here we are coming into late june and we have begun the season where we start tracking

smoke in our air. it is a spare the air day. that was already in place because of the heat wave and high pressure which would have been trapping and pollutants on its own. now we have the added element of smoke. when location is more likely to see it than others is the south bay. if you watch the forecast, there is the willow fire. i told you about that a few minutes ago. you can watch the plume of smoke go from the southwest to the northeast, in other words, our direction. as long as the fire goes in the direction stays the same, we will be pulling in that air. you can see the concern on the spare the air. that lines up pretty much perfectly with the way the smoke will be getting pulled our way. in better news, that is the marine layer in front of mount tam. this is the camera on top of the salesforce tower looking back to old gordon gate. that is what it looks like right now at the golden gate.

this is how you cool down and bring heat wave's to an end. if you look at futurecast were the marine layer is, it is barely coming into the bay. it barely stays long. there won't be a whole lot to which but at least it is nice to see that it is there. current temperatures as a result, 60 at sfo. mid-50s in the media bay and in the low 60s inland. here is the daytime highs for today. back into the mid-90s in the south bay. it is still a hot day down here but it is better than it was yesterday by a couple of degrees. we begin the cool down today. you really notice it tomorrow. monday is the day many locations will go below average. it will be a stark improvement to the temperatures by monday. for today, it is 10 degrees cooler over here. those are the daytime highs for the inland valleys and the east bay. we still have a heat advisory over here i will show you but it is better than it was. in the media bay, low to mid 70s. then we get back up into

mendocino county. temperatures are still in the low 100s of there. there is our heat advisory. inland valleys for contra costa and alameda county have it. as we work our way north, it is for the mountains of the north bay but it is still an excessive heat warning here in solano county. fairfield, vacaville, temperatures still climbing well into the 105 degree range. as we look across the rest of the 7-day forecast, you can see the numbers getting better for the early part of the week. the challenge with that is look at the warm-up that happens by the time we get to next weekend. i hate to have to say this but it looks like there could be another significant jump in the temperatures by next weekend into early next week. let's talk a little bit about that fire in big sur with the smoke. my experience is with fires in

wine country drifting south but this is coming north. >> you are thinking back -- a lot of the fires last year were fanned by offshore winds. that is what would happen with onshore winds. the winds would come to us from the northeast. we are not in an offshore wind event now so that fire to our south in big sur is being caught in the general southwest to northeast below. more often than not, that is the way the atmosphere wants to move over california. >> thank you very much. veterinarians have a warning for dog owners during the summer heat. the scorching hot pavement can cause problems for your pets. they say on a 90 degree date, temperatures on the asphalt can reach 150 degrees. that clinics say is the temperatures rise, animals are vulnerable to heat related injuries like blisters or burns on pause. >> they have a little footpad that is like our palm and that is very tender skin. it is meant to be walked on but not meant to be on a sizzling

welcome back. the time now is 6:29. i'm devon pelee. let's start with a quick check of our weather with meteorologist darren peck. >> in addition to the heat advisories and temperatures, we have to talk about spare the air today. you can see the smoke in our skype from the camera on top of the salesforce camera. that is the haze often the distant. the fire in big sur, the willow fire, is going smoke our way. this, however is not. that is the marine layer that has come back and over the golden gate bridge and that will help cool the temperatures down right now. it is in the mid-50s but low 60s if you are inland. while it is still hot today, we have to go back up to 90 degrees . that is close to 10 degrees cooler than yesterday but it does mean we still have a heat advisory if you are inland. i will talk about that as well in just a few minutes.

a live look at downtown san francisco this morning. the bay area's largest county is pulling out all of the stops to get its residence vaccinated against covid-19. kpix 5's mariab medina reports from san jose with the final push to reach herd immunity. >> reporter: monica zenner works in healthcare and takes care of her disabled parents, reasons that were enough to change her mind about not wanting the vaccine. >> i feel like it is very important to nick about other people. there are people around us who are sick. there are people around us with cancer. there are elderly people around us. >> reporter: right now, santa clara county is dealing with a significant slowdown in demand for the covid vaccine. major vaccination sites are scheduled to close soon as county leaders fined residents that are more likely to return to their doctors for final words of advice. >> it is a final push. the first million were really easy. the last few percent is

much harder. >> reporter: the county is not pulling back on its efforts, even if residents are, announcing this week those who get vaccinated at county sites could win tickets to concerts and warriors games. >> there is no magic number for herd immunity but if we get to 85%, we will be doing very well and there will be very little transmission of virus. >> we all need to do this. i don't think it is going away. it will be something we will have to do annually. >> reporter: it is not just the county offering incentives. the state is giving away 50,000 tickets to six flags and just gave out gift cards and millions of dollars in cash prizes but monica believes there are some people who won't buy into the dangling carrots. >> i don't think it will change minds of a lot of people. >> reporter: santa clara county reporting 78.8% of residents are fully vaccinated.

crashed his tow truck two blocks away. >> this is a man that i can say gave unconditional love to everyone and all he ever wanted to do was help people. >> there is no information on possible suspects. the victims girlfriend is pleading for anyone with information to come forward. this is the first weekend effort which juneteenth is a federally recognized holiday. the mayor of sacramento says that is not enough. why he's pushing for reparations for the black community. >> reporter: for the first time, juneteenth recognized not by a few but across cultures officially stamped on the calendar as a federal holiday. >> with our president making it a national holiday, that feels different. it feels like we are not doing it by ourselves. >> reporter: betty williams, president of the sacramento naacp applauds the move by president biden this week,

setting the date in stone. june 19, 1865, when union soldiers finally made it to galveston, texas to tell enslaved people they were free. >> the fact that we are the most oppressed and segregated individuals on this planet, potentially in the united states is something that needs to be discussed. >> many would say that our community leaders still are not doing enough for this equity. >> why don't we say that as elected officials, defending us from what is right is the start. >> reporter: mayor darrell steinberg, now one of the dozen mayors across the country, forming a coalition, committed to proving initiatives in debt dismantling institutional racism . mayors organized for reparations and equity, pushing for racial and economic justice. >> it is not just about celebrating a new national

holiday, it is about action backed by dollars. we are moving in that direction but we are far from done. we've got a long way to go. >> reporter: mayor steinberg admitting this is just the beginning of a long road to healing the wounds of history. >> you have to start somewhere. i do applaud that. >> governor gavin newsom launched a blue ribbon committee to study the idea of a reparations for the entire state of california. there is a powerful new art installation in the san francisco's golden gate park that encircles the monument to the author of the star-spangled banner and a slaveowner. protesters toppled the statue of francis scott key last year. former kpix 5 anchor and now sculptor dana king created sculptures that represent the first 350 enslaved people who were brought to this country on that first slave ship. only 25 of them survived the journey.

there are new signs that b.a.r.t. ridership is bouncing back. ridership on thursday was the highest b.a.r.t. had seen since the start of the pandemic. over 81,000 riders accounted for 20% of the weekday ridership in june. on august 30, b.a.r.t. plans to establish its service to close to what it was before the pandemic. went to big sur's most popular trails is back open after wildfires shut parts of it down for 13 years. the 1 1/2 mile trail leads to a

60 foot waterfall in pfeiffer big sur state park. what it looks like now after being restored. >> reporter: the pfeiffer falls trail has been closed since 2008. after you see what they have done with it, you will understand why rebuilding it for 13 years. feeling anything in this part of the world takes time and like everything in big sur, in the end, it is always worth it. >> everything is bigger and better. >> reporter: gym durant should know. he led the crew that worked on the pfeiffer falls trail, hiking it three times a day since 2017. >> help us feel like you are a proud papa. >> this project was the product of years and years of work. >> in 2008, the basin complex fire which burned 163,000 acres also destroyed many of the footprints.

storms, mudslides, budget shortfalls and the global pandemic. you get the idea. >> it is a matter of time before the next disaster. we can only do so much to prepare for it. we do our best to play catch-up. >> reporter: keep in mind the lumber, the rock, all of it was carted in and carried up the hill by hand. the stone alone weighed 1500 tons. >> 3 million pounds, that is a lot of rock. >> then there is the footbridge. 70 feet long made of timber and reinforced fiberglass. the crews rigged up a pulley system to hand carry all the beams of the mountain. >> this ridge will set the precedent for a lot of future bridge installations in the state of california. >> reporter: the pfeiffer falls trail is the most popular in all of big sur. the rangers had to move it up and out of the creek to prevent erosion and the trampling of habitat. in the process, they added 25 flights of stairs.

>> there are about 200 steps with a total of 500 foot vertical elevation gain. >> reporter: after a hike, the payoff. pfeiffer falls, 60 feet tall, springfed that runs year- round. to the lower left, you can see the new observation platform. >> has been proposed here about 19 years ago. >> reporter: kelly o'connor heard about today's grand opening and brought the kids to relive some family history. >> i think it is lovely. it is good for the soul to be able to be outside and around all the trees. i think it is important. >> my mom got engaged to my dad. it is the special place. it is how they came together. >> the reason a lot of us work for the state park is we really want to get people outdoors and interested in nature, get people out of the house and off the couch, get some exercise. >> reporter: for californians

and citizens of the world, after a year like 2020, enjoy. you deserve it. let's get a check of our local weather with darren peck. >> having just taken in the beauty of big sur, we have some adversaries from big sur in the sky. i'm talking about the smoke but trying to find a creative way to say a. it is a connection with where we were in big sur. what you are seeing a sunrise blocks the haze there. it looks pretty but that is all smoke coming up from the willow fire which is burning in the wilderness in big sur near that trail where the scenery was just being spotlighted. that is a different element in the sky, that is the marine layer. you can see what it looks like underneath that. that is how we cool down. before i get into the details, i want to show you how this is playing out. if we take a look at the high resolution satellite imagery over northern california, you

can see the smoke coming up from the fire down in big sur just south of santa cruz and monterey. that is all visible this morning on the high resolution satellite. hinckley, there is not as much smoke being pushed into the atmosphere now. in the heat of the day, we will likely see more smoke coming off the willow fire. sunset will look a bit off. that is the marine layer. you can see that southerly surge coming into the golden gate. a lot of things to be seen. because of the smoke -- we had a spare the air day before the smoke was being thrown into our sky. the pollutants will make it here at home. in the mid-levels now with all of the particulates, it is a spare the air day today. try to limit any of your own contributions.

as far as temperatures, low 60s if you are inland. mid-50s in the bay. for daytime highs, this is an improvement. low to mid 90s here in the south bay. 94 for the daytime high today. palo alto, 84. mid-90s for the inland valleys of the east bay. it is still hot but better than yesterday. almost a 10 degree improvement. however, there is a heat advisory there. we are not out of the woods yet. temperatures in the low to mid 70s on the bay shoreline put us back into the mid-80s for inland marin county. low hundreds in mendocino county. there is your heat advisory. it is an improvement from the excessive heat warning we have been living under here through the tri-valley and going up 680. the heat advisory stays in effect until noon today until 10:00 tonight. watch solano county.

fairfield, vacaville, still have an excessive heat warning. as we look at the 7-day forecast , daytime highs getting down into the low 80s by the time we get into monday and tuesday. that is short lived. as you take a look ahead to next weekend, look at the temperatures climbing again. we are back into the mid-90s for daytime highs. it is not look as hot as what we just went through but next weekend will be as hot as today. today is hot enough for anybody. >> as you unveiled the seven- day, i looked for an 80. i saw 80s and i can't wait. >> make the most of those what we have them. only 3% of high school students in the state are enrolled in computer science. that is according to the coalition computer science for california.

this week's jefferson award winner is bringing those numbers up. sharon chen shows us how she is bridging the digital divide. dishon thompson wanted to learn to code. when he got the chance to take classes from the san francisco based nonprofit, he saw his future. >> this is something you can proceed with and continue to work on. >> reporter: this fall, he will enter texas southern university as a computer science major. christina ortega creates opportunities for underserved k- 12 graters, opportunities the san francisco native wishes she had growing up in the bay area. >> it means a lot to me to be able to provide this opportunity to students. had there been this initiative when i was in high school, i could have possibly been one of our web design students.

>> reporter: they offer afterschool courses, workshops, and several boot camps. partners with mostly san francisco but also with oakland applicant charter schools. volunteers teach more than 360 students each year. that goes to 600 online and the pandemic. nine and 10 are students of color. they soak up lessons and web design, virtual reality and make projects that get back to the community. >> many students create a website for local mom-and-pop shops that have no website. >> reporter: rafael perez received the training he needed to enroll in ap computer science in high school. >> it gives me a head start. it seems like an open book. >> reporter: christina is also a mentor. she said don't be afraid to go to college outside of california. >> she is proud of me that i am going far and i am getting these different opportunities. >> reporter: christina hopes
