captioning funded by cbs good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with powerful storm systsem causing widespread destruction in the midwest and the southeast. late last night a tornado tore through the suburbs of chicago. about a dozen homes were damaged in the city of naperville, about 30 miles west of chicago. at least six people were hurt. four hospitalized. tree limbs were knocked down, and windows were broken. some residents were evacuated to nearby shelters. tropical depression claudette is regaining strength this morning and expected to become a tropical storm again as it nears the north carolina coast. a tropical storm warning is in effect throughout the area. the storm is being blamed for at least 13 deaths in alabama. what was then tropical storm claudette unleashed heavy rain and devastating winds as it made its way through the southeast over the weekend.

ten people were killed in butler county, alabama, saturday in a fiery multi-vehicle collision on a wet highway. eight of the dead are children. they were riding in a van from a youth ranch for abused or neglected kids. the youngest was 4 years old. a father and his 9-month-old daughter were also killed in another vehicle. one official said the vehicles likely hydroplaned on the wet road. and a suspected tornado caused claudette to destroy or badly damage at least 50 homes near the small alabama town of bruton, north of the florida border. it leveled a mobile home park, toppled trees on to houses, and ripped the roof off a high school gym. there are -- there is, rather, renewed concern this morning that we could possibly see a resurgence of the coronavirus in the fall. it comes as vaccination rates have declined in the u.s., and the highly contagious delta variant continues to spread.

laura podesta's in new york with the latest on this. laura, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the worrisome delta variant which was first detected in india has been found in 42 state. it has doubled the rate of hospitalization compared to the original covid-19 strain, that's according to the medical journal "t "the lancet." that's why we are continuing to go see a massive push to get people vaccinated. summer is now officiallynder way, and coronavirus restrictions have been eased in much of the u.s. >> as weather warms up, people may be going inside the air conditioning. that's why everybody needs to be vaccinated. >> reporter: to date, more than 65% of the country's adults have received at least one dose of a covid vaccine, shy of president biden's july 4th goal of 70%. experts say it may not be enough to prevent a resurgence in the fall. >> the variant could win this race if we do not increase the proportion of people in this state that are fully vaccinated.

>> reporter: demand for vaccines has fallen off in recent weeks. in places like here in new york that's because most people have already gotten their shots. but other states are looking behind, putting folks at risk. >> mississippi, alabama, arkansas, missouri, show very substantial upsurges of infection based entirely on how much population-wide immunity you have based on vaccination. >> reporter: former fda commissioner scott gottlieb says the death variant is driving current spread. >> it doesn't necessarily appear more pathogenic, more dangerous, but it's infecting people more easily. >> reporter: he suggested new strategies are needed to get more people vaccinated including offering shots at schools, workplaces, and doctors' offices. president biden is set to travel to raleigh, north carolina, later this week to encourage more people to roll up their sleeves and get the shot. anne-marie? >> laura podesta in new york. laura, thank you very much.

police say a deadly crash at a pride parade in floodwater, florida, was -- ft. lauderdale, florida, was likely an accident. the video shows it coming to a stop after it drove into marchers before the parade saturday. one man was killed, and another seriously injured. the 77-year-old driver was taken into custody by police and escorted away from the truck. authorities say the driver was part of the parade. no charges have been filed. police say the truck was supposed to be the lead vehicle in the parade, but the driver, who had ailments preventing him from marching, suddenly accelerated. >> we were waiting for the parade to begin, and all the sudden there was a thud. first thing we saw was lights. we saw the emergency vehicles approaching. >> we heard all the cops rushing there, but we thought it was the start of the parade. we had no idea. >> the truck driver and the victims were all part of the ft. lauderdale gay men's chorus

group. tractor-trailers a big day on -- it is a big day on capitol hill tomorrow. chuck schumer says that he will force a vote on a sweeping measure to overhaul federal election laws. but the support may not be there. christina ruffini reports. this is an enormously serious issue. >> reporter: speaking on the sunday shows, senator bernie sanders said he supports federal voting legislation passed by the house and backed by the white house. >> what republican legislate urts and governors are doing in the most disgraceful way imaginable is to try to deny people of color, young people, poor people, the right to vote. >> reporter: the for the people act would among other things automatically january roll eligible citizens to vote, make almost two weeks of early voting standard, and outlaw gerrymandering, partisan efforts to redraw congressional districts. republicans call the bill a power grab. >> it's a federal takeover of our election system. >> i've taken a look at all the new state laws. none of them are designed to

"usa today" reports the department of homeland security says u.s. borders with mexico and canada will remain closed through july 21st. restrictions on nonessential travel arere being extxtended t reduce t the spread d of covid. offificials say y essential l t and travel will be permitted. the borders have been mostly closed since the pandemic started, but travel from the u.s. into mexico's northern border cities has reportedly gone unchecked. "arizona central" says a man driving a pickup truck drove into bicyclists taking part in a road race. it happened saturday in navajo country about 240 miles northeast of phoenix. six of the cyclists are in critical condition. one man said that he saw the driver accelerate toward the cyclists. police say the 35-year-old suspect was shot by officers outside a nearby hardware store after he fled the scene.

>> reporter: good morning anne-marie. before i get into american and amazon's prime day, let's look at stock futures. they are actually now indicating a higher open on wall street this morning following last week's massive sell-off. on friday the dow tumbled 533 points, turning in its worst weekly loss since october. the nasdaq dropped 130, and the s&p fell 55. american airlines is canceling hundreds of flights through the middle of next month. the company cites staffing and lalabor shortages as travel demd rebounds from the coronavirus pandemic. about 950 flights are being scrapped. customers who booked through july 15th will be notified of any changes. a spokesperson said american is spreading the cancelations to minimize impact in a single area, but the main had been in dallas-fort worth will see the biggest changes. amazon prime day is under way. the two-day event runs today and tomorrow. according to adobe analytics,

history ahead of the tokyo summer games. weightlifting laurel hubbard will be the first transgender athlete to compete at an olympic game. she is among five athletes confirmed today on new zealand's weightlifting team. hubbard transitioned eight years ago at the age of 35. she won a silver medal at the 2017 championships and a gold in the 2019 pacific games in samoa. an exciting weekend for nba fans as the playoffs heat up. the atlanta hawks beat the philadelphia 76ers last night to win game seven and advance to the eastern conference finals. this is their first visit to the east finals since 2015. game one is wednesday night against the milwaukee bucks. over in the west, the suns defeated the clippers in game one of the western conference finals. devin booker led with first his career triple-double, 40 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists. this is the suns' eighth straight victory.

>> from my father. he's a cartographer. ashman dewar originally from jamaica came to the u.s. in the '70s and became a cartographer using images from pilots and turning them into maps. he would purchase flight simulators for his son to keep him busy. >> he put the game on the computer and i used to play it all the time 24/7. >> reporter: all that play paid off. in his 20s trying to figure out what career path to take, he was working at a restaurant. one day the owner who had a plane asked anselm if he wanted to take a ride which led to him taking the controls. >> he's like, have you ever flown before? i was like, no, first time. he's like, you're doing a good job. >> reporter: that restaurant owner offered to help him go to one of the top flights flight schools in the country. >> i am very proud of him. to see where he's coming from and how far he has reached. >> it's a blessing to have such
