don't have enough staff. good morning. let's start with the quick check of our weather. >> we are going to get a bit of a break in the daytime highs for and then the locations of the bay area. we made it in the low 90s on saturday but today we will be in the high 80s. we go into the low 70s for the bay and keep it 60 at the beaches. it will stay cloudy at the beaches all day. santa rosa, 86. san francisco, 67. i will be back with your complete forecast in just a few minutes. they have found a fifth body in the rubble of the collapse tower.

today our search and rescue teams found another body in the rubble. and as well, the search has revealed some human remains. >> reporter: forensic experts will use dna collected from family members to identify the remains. they are also battling a fire at the rescue site that has been hampering the rescue. >> our top priority is search and rescue and saving any lives that we can. >> reporter: this family is looking for any news about their mother. >> my mom is a fighter and i know that she loves us. >> reporter: investigators work to determine what caused the collapse, of a port did find abundant cracking and columns,

beams, and walls in the parking garage and major structural damage to a slab caused by failed waterproofing. the report did not indicate that those issues could lead to a collapse. the mayor says he is working on a plan to temporarily relocate residents to another building. >> to those that are frightened and concerned i want to make sure they have options. >> reporter: they are reviewing the safety of all buildings 40 years old and over. fema has agreed to pay for housing for people living in the second tower. it is basically identical and felt that same year. san jose police are investigating a deadly motorcycle accident that happened around 9:00 last night. it is near the 101 and capital expressway. a motorcyclist collided with a car. this is the city's 25th traffic

that this year. this video was taken just before 10:00 at moss way and fairmont avenue. a sedan crashed into a fire hydrant shearing off the top and sending water shooting high into the air and then pouring back down on top of that car. no word on what caused the crash. in southern california, and suv driver is in custody after crashing into a baldwin hills house killing the woman inside. here is the latest details. >> reporter: lapd investigators all the way the suv from this baldwin hills home overnight. the suv broke through a bedroom wall and killed an 85-year-old woman. she died in her bed. >> i heard a big crash and came running over here.

>> reporter: she lives in the home with her parents. >> i saw the car in my parents bedroom. >> reporter: she spent the morning cleaning up some of the mess left behind. overnight, her father was rushed to the hospital. she says his physical wounds are superficial, but he lost his wife of 66 years. >> we are from ecuador and we are where we are because of my parents. >> reporter: the suv driver went to the hospital. at 1:30 he rear-ended a police cruiser but left the scene. that started the pursuit that ended up in the couple's bedroom. >> i didn't hear bricks or anything. >> reporter: this man says he knew something terrible happened as soon as he heard the crash >> he didn't even lose control.

he just went straight into the house. the police were right on his tail >> it is terrible. this is such a nice community. >> reporter: several people have told us that the crash startled them out of bed. they are heartbroken over the loss. >> i have no words. she is gone and this is not something that you could foresee. >> reporter: we are waiting to hear what charges the driver will be facing. and two lapd officers suffered minor injuries while trying to rescue the couple after the crash. 12 people are dead after a hot air balloon plunged to the ground in new mexico. it happened on the west side of albuquerque. the balloon reportedly hit a power line and caught fire. and then the gondola fell onto the road.

the balloon envelope floated away eventually landing on a residential rooftop. >> the balloon was there but no basket and no people. we were all searching for the basket and looking for the people. >> federal investigators worked to peace what happened. help-wanted sites are popping up all across the east bay. the state reopen nearly 2 weeks ago, but many small businesses are far from fully operational. many business owners are struggling to find help. >> reporter: business owners are having a tough time filling vacancies. they say they've never seen a labor shortage this bad. >> it is a sign of progress. live music, good food, and a spirited crowd. the owner of this restaurant says the labor shortage is slowing down his recovery >> i started closing on mondays.

>> reporter: the lack of staffing for some to shorten the business hours. >> i am offering with two cooks. pre-pandemic, we had five or six. i am looking for a head chef, two or three line cooks and bartenders, everything. >> reporter: they blame the extra money for incentivizing people to stay home. it is not just restaurants. the entire service industry is facing the same challenge >> we were open seven days a week pre-pandemic, and now we are only open five because i don't have enough staff. >> reporter: she is desperate to hire an aesthetician. >> i have put an ad on craigslist and have not received a single resume. >> reporter: this is good news for those looking for work. this college student was hired

a small plane slammed into a home overnight in utah killing the pilot and leaving wreckage wedged into the roof. the single engine plane came down in north logan which is 80 miles north of salt lake city. the home was empty at the time. the ntsb and faa are investigating. the san francisco school district will be building affordable houses for teachers. last week the board approved policies for eligibility. a developer could break ground as soon as next year to build 134 apartments. a proposed state budget would create more slots for california students at three uc campuses. the goal is to reduce students from out of state that typically pay higher tuition. they would take uc to reduce

nonresidents over a five-year period from 22% to 18% which would free up space for 4500 california students at ucla, uc berkeley, and uc send, santa barbara. there was a mandatory evacuation yesterday. the fire was reported near downtown. hot and windy conditions fueled the flames but crews got it under control after it burned vegetation and downed power lines. farther south, fire crews are making headway battling the willow fire east of big sur. flames have burned nearly 2500 acres in the los padres national forest in monterey county. let's get a check of our weather.

69 numbers as we work our way into marin county. 81 in santa rosa is like a gift. that is actually below average. and then it gets noticeably hot. lake county, 103. that is why we've got the excessive heat warning for lake and mendocino county. it does not expire until tuesday. this is where the concern is for heat and one small aspect of a much larger heat wave making national headlines today for how off the charts the heat wave is right now in seattle and oregon. the hottest temperatures they have ever recorded. here are some of our high gets numbers. as we look at us in comparison with the rest of the west coast, 112 in portland.

and those numbers are about 30 degrees above average. if we look at the map, that shows you how much above average we are. when you get into the deep shades of purple, from that whole corridor on i-5, it will get noticeably better on tuesday. at least for getting away from extreme heat. by wednesday, still above average but we will be out of the excessively hot heatwave. for the next seven days, we do not change at all. temperatures stay just like this . there was a rare shark attack this weekend at a popular bay area beach. it happened on saturday morning. it is north of half moon bay. we learn why this rare attack has officials concerned. >> reporter: a server was in the party in gray whale cove beach when a juvenile great white shark reportedly six to eight feet long swim up and bit him on the leg. they quickly released its grip

and swam off. >> it was only one bite. there were 10 lacerations and the surfer was able to swim back in. >> there is still blood on the sand with a 39-year-old man moved up the beach waiting until first responders could arrive. hours later, beachgoers were not venturing into the water >> everybody freaks out because it's a shark and it is the stigma of it. sharks rarely bite anyone. that is why people get scared. >> reporter: bites may be rare, but there are lots of sharks. what is alarming people is so close to the beach this attack took place. >> they are usually within the surf zone. >> people don't usually think of sharks being 100 feet off the beach. >> not necessarily, but a shark

life from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news . welcome back and thank you for joining us. let's start with the quick check of our weather. well, we will get a bit of a cool down if you are inland in the east bay are up and sonoma county. only in the mid 80s for most areas. there are still 100 degree temperatures in mendocino. here is the lowdown.

it was in the low 90s in concord yesterday. today, 86. we will keep the temperatures in the low 70s in the bay. police have arrested a suspect wanted in two shootings just hours apart that left two dead and one injured. police arrested a 32-year-old man and booked him into jail. he was wanted for two murders that happened on may 15th. police say he fatally shot a 61- year-old man and in less than three hours later police say he shot two other men. deputies say a domestic violence call turned into an ambush. alameda county deputies responded to an apartment on

ashland avenue. a 21-year-old man slammed the door and moments later deputies say he open that door and began firing at them with a can gun. the suspect jumped from a balcony and hid in bushes. he did eventually surrender. he was arrested and police also recovered i can gun. the suspect was booked into jail. a community group looking to protect asians from the recent rise of hate crimes have taken to the streets to show people how to defend themselves from attacks. yesterday's care fair was put on by organizers of the asian pacific american group. >> we stepped out because we saw what was going on and what the government is providing is not enough. people are hurt. we want to come out here to protect lives in handout this equipment. >> everyone received free

pepper spray, whistles, and flowers. police and california have made an arrest for a homicide on the venice beach boardwalk. a man was found with blunt force trauma to his head. officers arrested a 38-year-old suspect. investigators say the two men were involved in an ongoing dispute. this is the latest incident in a long-standing homeless problem. >> every part of the city needs to be part of the solution. we cannot be exempt and expect that just low income neighborhoods our far-flung communities will be part of the solution. >> the boardwalk should be treated as a regulated space and he wants encampments moved to locations with better security. agents raided the home of

>> usually it's the fourth of july when the heat really hits up. it is earlier this time around. >> reporter: this video shows firefighters dropping water on the wildfire in santa clarita. officials tell me they are expecting elevated wildfire threat starting on sunday. saturday morning they say that they put out three small brushfires including two in the santa clarita valley. >> it's happening almost every single day right now. >> reporter: the fire season seems to be starting earlier than past seasons. >> we are six weeks earlier and seeing the level of dried out fresh. we have low humidity in the actual plant itself. low amounts of moisture and humidity in those plans because we did not have, a plan is simply fuel. now we've got fuel that is more

little bit warmer. as we work our way up from nampa, mid-80s. santa rosa, 81 which is cooler than you should be. watch how dramatically it changes when you get into la county. these are the locations today for chaff and excessive heat warning. to go along with the numbers we just like that, watch the marine layer. a great start to today but it will melt back to the coast by the late morning. you can see a few clouds to the golden gate and along the shore of the bay shoreline proper. it is such a thick marine layer that we have gotten light mist out of this in the overnight hours. if you step outside along the coast or the peninsula, don't be surprised if things are . we will do that again tonight going into monday morning.

all the while that marine layer misting at night and keeping us cool is no help for lake county and mendocino county. the excessive heat warning is under effect until tuesday. if you look at the daytime highs for today, clear lake goes up into what we saw earlier. here is a bigger perspective. look how much higher the numbers are in portland. 112 is the hottest of portland has ever been. 104 in seattle. the hottest they have ever been. a good comparison is to see how far above average those numbers are. 30 degrees above average. luckily for us it is too far north. we got spared. it will be warmer on tuesday but no dramatic swings in our forecast. for many incoming college freshmen, this summer will be
