good morning, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. it has been a little more than four days since the condominium in surfside, florida, partially collapsed. this morning the search for survivors continues as the window of hope narrows. the death toll has increased to nine, but more than 150 people still remain unaccounted for. rescue crews from around the world are helping out. laura podesta is tracking the very latest. laura, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. family of the missing were allowed to visit the site of the collapse for the first time yesterday. the private tour gave them the chance to pray, to mourn, and to understand what rescuers are dealing with as the search for survivors continues. miami-dade rescue crews are working alongside teams from israel and mexico in the search for survivors. >> there is always hope. >> they're going to keep having high hopes until the moment we cannot anymore.

>> reporter: rescuers say the operation is especially difficult because of how the building fell. >> when there's an earthquake, the buildings move side to side. when they fall, there's holes that the rescuers can come in. and this was kind of like an implosion which made the building flat. >> reporter: crews have dug a massive 125-foot-long trench that's allowed them to find some human remains. >> we continue to sweep the mound with our k-9s using all of the technology available to us and machinery to lift the debris. >> reporter: while it may take months to determine a cause, a survey from 2018 indicated abundant cracking in concrete columns, and major structural damage to a concrete slab. but it did not warn of a collapse. >> i have a lot of survivor's guilt on this. you know, why me and why -- why not my neighbor from 604? >> reporter: alfredo lopez was asleep when he was jolted awake.

>> everything that i saw when i opened the door facing east, there was nothing there. you know, it was -- it was just darkness. and that is -- that is undescribable. you know, it's freaky as freaky can be. >> reporter: heavy machinery is removing large pieces of the rubble which is being taken to a warehouse for forensic evaluation. the 2018 survey i mentioned in that report estimated that repairs would cost $15 million. now construction on the roof was under way, but fixes to the concrete and other structural damage had not yet begun. anne-marie? >> laura podesta in new york. thank you so much. a dangerous and historic heat wave will continue to bake the pacific northwest. the national weather service says new record highs were set yesterday. seattle hit 104. portland reached 112 degrees. and eugene hit 110, breaking a 30-year record. if got so hot in eugene the

track and field trials were delayed for hours. fans were asked to leave the stadium. heptathlete brooks was carted off later and later withdrew from the competition. surfaces exceeded 150 degrees. the u.s. military launched a series of air strikes against iran-backed militias. the attacks happened yesterday targeting three facilities near the border between iraq and syria. the pentagon described the air strikes as defensive saying that they were launched in response to attacks by militias. this is the second time the biden administration has taken military action in the region. in february american forces launched air strikes against iran-backed military groups in syria. a bipartisan deal to invest nearly $1 trillion in america's infrastructure appears to be back on track. over the weekend president biden walked back comments that he

would only sign it if a larger democrat-backed measure was approved. christina ruffini reports from the white house. the president's going to honor his word -- >> reporter: on "face the nation," cedric richmond said the president would stand by the $1.2 trillion infrastructure deal he made with republicans. >> we should agree, move on, create progress for the american people. >> reporter: the white house is having to clarify its position after president biden said last week he wouldn't sign the deal unless it was accompanied by a separate measure to found what he calls human infrastructure. democratic priorities like childcare, free community college, and green energy. republicans said that was never part of the bargain. >> you can get whiplash by trying to follow joe biden on this. >> reporter: the fight might come from progressives in the president's own party. >> we're here to make sure that he is successful in making sure that we do have a larger infrastructure plan. >> reporter: who think the compromise bill compromised too much. >> the challenge is whether the

democrats can get their act together and get it on his desk. >> reporter: the white house issued a statement clarifying that the president wasn't saying he'd veto the measure if it makes it to his desk. it's unclear if the progressive democrats will vote against the smaller compromise bill if it makes it to the floor. christina ruffini, the white house. authorities in france are looking for a spectator at the tour de france. she caused a major crash. the woman stepped in front of the pack with a cardboard sign hitting the german rider, tony martin. he fell which caused another rider to crash. the race was held up for several minutes. one rider pulled out of the event, and at least eight others were hurt. authorities say the woman left the scene before investigators arrived. people across the nation took part in pride festivities this weekend. hundreds of people turned out in new york city to celebrate the lgbtq community. the march was mostly virtual again this year, but the streets

the owner of this home in a posh san francisco suburb often referred to as the "flintstones" house settled a lawsuit with the town of hillsborough allowing fred and his pals to stay. records reveal that florence fang will be paid $125,000 by the town to cost costs linked to the lawsuit which began in 2019. the settlement also states that fang must apply for building permits, but that they are guaranteed to be approved once they are filed. the first post-pandemic crews from the u.s. has set sail, and detroit was hit with severe weather. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "detroit free press" reports city residents are cleaning up after devastating floods. more than six inches of rain fell in parts of detroit on friday. neighborhoods were submerged along with cars and tractor-trailers on busy highways. one driver said she didn't think she would make it out alive. >> the water was coming up and i was thinking i'm going to die. >> i have never seen anything like this ever.

and driving through it is scary. >> michigan's governor has declared a state of emergency to help address threats to public health and safety related to the heavy rainfall. the "san francisco chronicle" says a beach-goer was injured in a great white shark attack. it happened saturday off the coast of san mateo in northern california. authorities say a 35-year-old man was swimming when a great white shark bit him on the leg. the man swam to shore and was taken to the hospital. he was discharged and is expected to be okay. officials say the shark was up to seven-feet long. the beach will be closed today to reassess the water safety. and the "miami herald" reports the first cruise ship departed a u.s. port since the pandememic began. celebrity edge left ft. lauderdale, florida, on saturday. it is the first cruise ship in the nation to set sail after 15 months. passenger capacity was capped at 40%.
