it's tuesday,un it's tuesday, june 29th, 2021, this is the "cbs morning news." agonizing wait. families hold on to hope as the death toll rises in the surfside condo collapse. what the former maintenance manager is saying about the building. blistering heat. new record highs are set again in the pacific northwest. how covid-19 is making it worse for some people who are just trying to cool off. times square shooting. for the second time in two months, an innocent bystander is shot at the new york tourist destination. the city's response following a string of gun violence.

good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the massive rescue operation at a condo in surfside, florida, continues to yield little news for family members. two more bodies were pulled from the rubble yesterday bringing the death toll to 11. some 150 remain unaccounted for though. hundreds of people are taking part in what state leaders are calling the largest non-hurricane search related mission in the country. they are working around the clock in hopes of finding survivors. they're using everything from sniffer dogs to sonar devices. many are wondering how this happened. laura podesta has the story. >> reporter: the condo's former maintenance manager is speaking out about the amount of flooding he saw within the building's basement parking grabbing. any time there was a particularly high tide the water would come in and it would sit

there before eventually seeping downward. as the rescue effort continued in the background, a vigil was held on the beach in surfside, florida, last night. >> trying the best we can to set a good example to be strong. >> despite a strong army sifting through the rubble 24 hours a day, no one has been found alive sips the day of the collapse. >> families, because of the process we've gone to, are coming to their own conclusions. some are feeling more hopeful, some less hopeful because we do not have definitive answers. officials are asking for workers patience as they work as fast as possible. >> we're not lifting floor by floor. we're talking about pulverized concrete, we're talking about steel. every time there's an action, there's a reaction. >> reporter: it's still unclear what caused the 40-year-old condo to fall. it showed failed waterproofing was causing major structural

damage to acre slab. >> former maintenance manager espinoza would come in there. it was so much water all the time that the pumps never could keep up with it. >> reporter: a contractor that visited the building 36 hours before the collapse shared these photos with the miami herald. he noted cracking concrete and severely eroded rebar under the swimming pool. >> reporter: the contractor was there to estimate the price to work on the pool. it was one part of a multi-million project currently underway at the 40-year-old building. anne-marie. >> laura podesta in new york. thank you so much, laura. now to our other big story, the record breaking heat in the midwest. temperatures are expected to ease slicely for some parts today but intensify in the

interior sections. city of portland set another high, 116 degrees. seattle set another record of 108 degrees. today the city's highs will be in the 90s. in tacoma, washington, pieces of a panel. some people cannot cool off in community centers because of covid-19. >> parts of the pacific northwest have never been hotter. >> this is unseasonably warm. >> reporter: as temperatures soared to triple digits. the jenkins took an early walk to beat the heat. >> we have to get the exercise in. come early, drink water, eat healthy. >> in seattle, washington, the city is experiencing days of triple digits for the first time ever. >> unfortunately we're starting to see this year after year, it's getting hotter.

>> reporter: seattle months are usually mild with average temperatures in the june in the 60s and 70s. many homes do not have air conditioning. now stores selling ac units are having trouble keeping up with demand. >> we had three that were available to customers. that's all we could get. >> reporter: meteorologists say the extreme temperatures hitting the pacific northwest are unlike anything they've seen before thnchts is a once in 1,000 year event. >> reporter: covid-19 is making the situation worse. cooling centers and community centers for people without air conditioning are offering limited seating or none at all. >> this is difficult. i don't know why the police station is closed to the public. >> cbs news, los angeles. more concerning weather. tropical storm dappy came ashore in south carolina just hours after forming. the storm, which has now weakened to a depression made landfall north of hilton head.

earlier in the day people headed to the beach as thick clouds filled the sky. danny is expected to dump more rain in the tennessee valley and rapidly lose strength as it moves inland. new york city's mayor is ramping up the number of police in times square after a tourist was shot in broad daylight. a bullet ricochetted. samuel poulin was visiting with family. chaos broke out after the gunshots. >> people were running towards the street where it all happened but the police made them come back the other way and then we were going where we thought it was safe basically until they figured out what was going on. >> poulin is expected to be

okay. this occurred just a block where there was another shooting last month. possible criminal charges could be announced against the trump organization as early as this week. defense leaders met with prosecutors in new york yesterday in a last attempt to stop an indictment against the company. they do not plan to charge donald trump himself at this time. the lawyer says this involves syringe benefits. the house is expected to vote on a bill early this week that would establish a new panel to investigate the january 6th capitol riot. the committee would be chosen by members and another five would be reported. it comes after they blocked an independent bipartisan commission to investigate the attack. coming up, a massive fire

anne-marie. the consumer confidence index is being released today. this comes on the heels of another record-setting session on wall street. the dow fell 150 points but the nasdaq rallied 140. the s&p 500 added 9 points. >> reporter: juul has agreed to pay $40 million to north carolina. it's the first state to settle with the ecigarette maker over the teen vaping epidemic. they accused juul of unfair and deceptive marketing practices. they have agreed to stop marketing with sweet flavors, social media ads and concert sponsorships. facebook has joined the ranks of companies valued over $1 trillion. news comes after a judge dismissed antitrust lawsuits from a group of state attorneys general who claim the social media network is a monopoly. facebook has had a series of

the front line is so fluid we're told the taliban militants overran this outpost reaching an area a half mile behind us before they were pushed back by afghan government forces and local militias. as we've been here ourselves, we've come under fire too. >> sniper feyerick could he shayed off the rocky outcrop with the final u.s. troop withdrawal edging closer, the taliban has doubled the territory it holds in two months, untroubled by american airstrikes. across the country local militias like these are filling the void raising concerns of an all out civil war. a local commander tells his men war is not the solution but we have to defend our country. when afghan humvees started a fighting retreat, we were told to leave, too, in case the taliban kept advancing and that's the fear for the whole country now that u.s. troops are
