president biden and the first lady will head to surfside, florida, tomorrow, to visit the site of the deadly condo collapse and meet with victims' families and first responders.e with 149 people still unaccounted for. authorities have asked the government for additional rescue teams as two storm systems in the atlantic could pose a severe weather threat to florida and hamper the search efforts. laura podesta is tracking the very latest developments. the condo board president warned about the building's safety. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. she did. in a letter to residents last month, she said that damage to the garage had gotten significantly worse. now the exact cause of the collapse is still under investigation, but we do know fom reports of phone records that residents saw a portion of the pool deck collapse into the underground parking garage in the minutes before the building fell.

piece by piece crews are methodically removing debris from the collapsed building in surfside, florida. >> we find strollers and baby bottles, stuffed toys, you know. it just brings a sense of reality to the moment. >> reporter: officials remain optimistic that search teams will find survivors. >> it is their life's work to search for people alive, and they are truly the best in the world. >> reporter: it's unclear why the 40-year-old building came down, but it's clear it needed work done. in april the condo board president wrote a letter detailing $16 million in repairs. the observable damage such as in the garage has gotten significantly worse, she wrote, adding the concrete deterioration is accelerating. >> this is a puzzle -- >> reporter: allyn kilsheimer is a structural engineer who's been hired by the town to investigate the collapse. one piece of that puzzle is figuring out what a lobby attendant heard. >> a muffled boom, and then x

number of seconds later a much bigger boom, and then y seconds after that a much bigger boom. i think the second one, i think i understand the third one. i don't understand the first one. >> reporter: those in a sister tower say there have been significant inspections there this week. >> we had about 20 inspectors in the building. they were inspecting everything, police, fire. >> reporter: the investigator didn't see anything that showed an imminent danger of collapse. and with hurricane season approaching and intensifying, allyn kilsheimer says he will be looking at the remaining part of the collapsed building to see if it can hold up against hurricane-force winds. anne-marie? >> laura podesta in new york. thank you very much. the historic heat wave in the northwest may be responsible for about 12 deaths in washington and oregon. the "associated press" says authorities are investigating each case, but some of the victims include elderly people, homeless people, and a farm worker.

area do not have airtiin >> we to oney anthey're soutmith came to the rescue. he drove all night to redding, california, to buy air conditioners for his family. >> thought i had room for another 17, so i grabbed 17 more and thought i'd bring them back. if people were interested in them, they could pick them up for exactly what i paid for them. >> reporter: people are also scrambling to book hotel rooms for the ac, but many are sold out. spokane is experiencing rolling blackouts. >> it's something that we can do incrementally and in small amounts of time like they're talking an hour at a time, then that's what we can do to conserve our grid. >> reporter: and the race is on to harvest cherries in yakima. another heat dome is stalled over the east coast, and it will hit 100 in new york city wednesday. >> stay indoors and use air continuing if you have it. >> reporter: others are finding relief at the city's beaches or pools. danya bacchus, cbs news, los angeles.

former president trump is heading to the u.s./mexico border today. he's expected to out to his border wall, the signature promise of his campaign. mr. trump will be joined by texas governor greg abbott who has vowed to complete the wall with state funds and private donations. the visit comes an vice president harris on friday traveled to texas to meet with border agents. she has come under fire by republicans for not doing enough to stop the influx of migrants at the border. in the race to vaccinate america against covid, there's more urgency as the delta variant continues to rapidly spread in the u.s. the cdc says the strain is responsible for about 20% of all covid cases in the u.s. and it can now be found in every state. >> i am concerned that over time the more chance you have this virus to mutate the more chance it has of mutating into a form that can wreak more havoc. you worry that over time the immunity we've developed either

because of previous infection with covid or because of vaccination is going to wane as the virus continues to evolve. >> in an email to cbs news, the cdc says there are no immediate plans to change mass guidance. it's urging unvaccinated people to get inoculated since they remain at higher risk of catching the virus. the house approved a bill to remove confederate statues from the u.s. capitol. the legislation passed in a 285-120 vote. it calls for the removal of about a dozen statues including those of jefferson davis. it would also remove the bust of roger taney, the chief jusice who delivered the landmark dred scott decision denying the rights of citizenship to people of african descent. a similar bill failed in the senate last year, but supporters are hoping for a different outcome now that joe biden is president and democrats control the senate. coming up, wimbledon

he tased me. >> in his report, the trooper called the teenager a suspicious person who darted and hid in bushes after seeing the trooper's car. he says that he used the taser because rodeman failed to obey his commands. rodeman is back home after spending ten days in juvenile detention. and "the hill" says the national security agency is denying allegations by tucker carlson that it is spying on him. on monday's show, carlson claimed the biden administration and the nsa were monitoring his electronic communications in order to leak them and take the show off the air. carlson said that he got the information from a whistleblower in the u.s. government. the nsa said the allegation is not true, and carlson has never been an intelligence target. still ahead, the worst traffic in america. the place that dethroned los angeles for having the worst gridlock. ck.

in the northwest may be responsible for about 12 deaths in washington and oregon. tens of millions of americans are planning to hit the road this fourth of july weekend. but finding gas may not be so easy in some places because of a shortage of delivery drivers. here's erroll barnett. >> reporter: americans hitting the road this weekend have plenty of company. more than 47 million planning to go somewhere. up 40% from last year and on track to be the second highest independence day travel numbers on record. some gas stations are already reporting supply issues. a shortage of fuel truck drivers is causing delivery delays in places like washington, oregon, california, and colorado out west to iowa and ohio. >> there is no gas shortage. please don't go panic shopping. >> reporter: andrew gross with aaa says panic buying that followed the colonial pipeline hack can easily be avoided.
