to be everywhere. >> reporter: the struggle to get clean drinking water was profiled by "new york times" in 2018. many said the water started disappearing when coca-cola began operations there earlier. coca-cola exceeded expectations in several years but we discovered somethig differently wen we visited and took our findings back to the company. >> the highlands in southern mexico are rugged and remote. when we arrived we saw signs of america everywhere. people here are among the biggest consumers of coca-cola in the world. one study found 3% of babies and 16% of toddlers here drink soda. while coke doesn't flow from the taps, critics say the coke-bottling plant consumes much of water to make

>> shop after shop here advertises coca-cola but one thing this neighborhood doesn't have is running water. >> residents of this neighborhood invited us to see what's left in the municipal water tanks. >> jose' is telling me these three tanks are the main sorts of water for this community. can you open the lid? no water. [ speaking foreign language ]. so three weeks without water. >> tedata from coca-cola shows 39% of the global production was generated in high or extremely high water-stressed regions and some of those products end up on american store shelves. we reached out to coca-cola who declined to speak on camera but told us in a statement they met and exceeded replenishment goals for five years in mexico. >> sylvia is showing us how she

[ speaking foreign language ]. without this water you wouldn't have any drinking water without this water >> no. >> with climate change impacting rainfall sylvia's reserves are running low. >> it's sad, we can't bathe we can't drink water she says. she's one of the residents calling on the mexican government and coca-cola to help with the water supply. >> how many struggle to get water. >> every day coca-cola takes the water. >> cbs news found the san bal b government to extract 110 million gallons of water each year, even as rainfall has declined and the growing population moved to protected wetlands.

last year was requested to revoke license but was denied. the statement said the plant draws water from deep underground and don't effect the local water supply. coca-cola influence in the region began in the 1960s with marketing that had religious under tones. and in indigenous churches across southern mexico we saw it used during prayers. coke helps to fuel the economy employing 358 people at the bottling plant and hundreds of shops that sell its product but doctors say this lifee for many may also be making people sick. he researches diabetes in the region. >> we know those over 14 it's over 35%eabet. >> he says without easy access to water people are primarily drinking coke, specifically addressing our findings here
