of specifics . let me get you ready if you have early plans. it is gray over the entire bay area, especially at the golden gate and here. you can see the gray skies here and temperatures are around 60. although it is only 55 in santa rosa, everyone else is 60 degrees. for the daytime high today, 85. for inland spots, a little warmer than last week but pretty much on the mark for average for this time of year. see you back for the rest of the forecast in a few minutes. the sound of illegal fireworks rang out last night. he got a great vantage point overlooking those fireworks. >> reporter: right behind me is east oakland and the fireworks have been going off on a pretty consistent basis after dark. it lit up the sky line saturday

evening. >> it is ta much. it has been going on since may. >> he said every year they start a few months before july 4th and typically stop a week after the holiday. >> all hours of the night from 2:00, 3:00 in the morning, early in the morning, so it is a lot of bam, bam. >> reporter: military veteran kerby thompson has led it. >> it sometimes sounds like military grade. ite keeps him and his dog up at night. it is upsetting to the dog and it is too much. >> reporter: while some hate the fireworks, others love them. michael alexxander celebrated in his son's high school graduation with family and friends at the park. they ended the celebration by blasting off fireworks. >> for fun, joy. it is for nothing malicious, just to enjoy, really for the kids, but we're all kids at

media platforms. what may be one of the largest ransomware attacks in the history is sweeping the u.s. and the world. casilla says it has been the victim of a sophisticated cyber attack. businesses are scrambling on this holiday weekend to contain it. the company makes network management software and hackers are using it to spread the ransomware. president biden said there will be consequences if the attack is originating somewhere in russia. the part of the building left standing in the condo collapse in florida will be torn down. there were concerns, it, ta, could collapse. that dem lation needs to happen before tropical storm elsa hits. here is the latest. >> reporter: ten days after the deadly collapse at champlain towers, the demolition date is set for sunday for the badly damaged portion of the con so that are still standing. >> that building is too unsafe

to let people back in. >> reporter: with the storm system taking aim at south florida, they didn't want the remaining building to fall and cause another disaster. a structural engineer was hired by the city of surfside. >> no one really knows in detail exactly what the condition of the remaining bidding is, if the storm is going to hit. if the wind hit as certain amount, we'll tell them to get away. >> reporter: first responders continue to remove and sift through millions of concrete on the site that is safe to access. >> they are on their hands and knees. >> reporter: part of debris field were off limits for safety reasons, because the pile was holding the damaged building un. once the structure comes down, first responders will be able to search the whole site. >> family members and everyone says search and rescue. at what point does it become recovery. >> the mission is going to be

becacause that''s power r down . and to breaking news. at least 29 people died after a philippines' military plane crashed this morning. it was carrying around 90 troops and over shot the runway. around 50 people were rescued front burning wreckage. this video shows thick black smoke rising from the plane. >> a storm watch for the florida keys as tropical storm elsa bears down on parts of the cuba in the gulf of mexico. heavy rain, flashed floods and sustained winds of 40 miles per hour could hit florida in the

next few days. ron desantis is urging residents to get ready. other tropical storm elsa and surfside cori spots. floridians should begin their preparation efforts, having a kit with seven days of supplies and develop a disaster plan ahead of the storm. plan for your pets. anyone with special needs and check on your neighboris and the elderly. >> many floridians are well aware to prepare. one woman remembers how winds from hurricane irma tore down trees in her yard in 2017. it was scary to go through that, those strong, strong winds. >> the storm battered part of the dominican republic in haiti yesterday. the national hurricane center said elsa could bring two two to six inches of rain to some

areas of the state. >> hurricane hunters will fly straight into it to gather data. one woman describes what it is like to be on board an aircraft in the middle of a storm. >> everybody has a responsibility they have to uphold and as long as you do that, we're tasked to complete, you can't be too concerned. the pilots are doing their best job in the front to control the aircraft. we're looking at the radar data to help assist the pilots in making the decisions how they turn the aircraft. >> this is a live look at the white house where an oakland firefighter will be honored today. he represents the national association of hispanic firefighters. more than 1,000 firefighters and families will be there at the event. >> a they have been busy prepearing this week with all

hands on deck just in case there are any fireworks' related flare-ups. wilson walker reports from pittsburgh. >> reporter: as the evening gave way to darkness, the skies were relatively quiet, a marked departure from last year when several fires erupted on july 3rd and 100 fires on july 4th, a month worth of fires in a three-hour period. >> it was so -- the level of activity was so intense last year on the fourth of july evening that we had to reduce our responses for nonstructure fires, meaning a fire like this, a fireworks fire, down to one apparatus where you would normally get several. >> reporter: that weekend stretched them to their limits and the risks have only accelerated since then. >> there is more fire danger and more awareness of it this year than past years, but last year it sounded like a war zone

out here. >> reporter: firefighters have spent weeks trying to drive that message home that it is too dangerous for a repeat of last year. have people been lessening? >> we hope so. we have done a lot of work on social media and done our annual demonstration that way do showing how dangerous even safe and sane fireworks are. it is just too dry to be messing with safe fireworks which are illegal in contra costa county. >> there is a phone number to call anyone using illegal fireworks. let's get a check of our weather now with darren peck. a so i'll start out. the forecast on the fourth of july and what to expect today. we'll look at look at the fireworks forecast and if you have plans. couldn't ask for a better day a

cross the bay area, low 80s for daytime highs in inland locations. we'll be in the low to mid 60s in the bay. yes, some low clouds. for the most part, those clouds will melt back to the beach by late morning and most of the day, most of us should have blue skies. real pretty. i'll show you the timing on the marine layer for both the middle of the day and then, again, in the early evening when we get into the prime time for fireworks. that would be right now when i'll show you that. this is the fourth of july. that is the 9:00 hour. you can see the marine layer has come back far enough that it will be covering much of the sky for the entire city and over into the east bay. question is, how low will the ceiling be? until you get up to the bottom

of the clouds where it could obscure fireworks. that could be high enough that you get a decent show but we should plan on the clouds playing a significant role in the fireworks. you'll still get the colors of them. that is what it looks like right now over san jose. how the entire bay areas waking up to the gray psych this is nothing new. we have been doing this for the last week. good sign here in the bay. we can see the entire bay bridge. there have been many mornings this week where the ceiling of the marine layer was so low, it was obscuring the tops of those towers, so a good sign at least now for the height of the marine layer if you're concerned about being able to see good fireworks tonight. >> >> low 60s. although it is mid 50s in the north bay for santa rosa,

pretty typical to have temperatures cooler up there. if we take the view from the current temperatures, put the current marine layer on top of it, there is that. watch it all melt back. as we get into the late morning and early afternoon, the only place we're seeing it here is along the coastline and maybe a few clouds in the east bay hills. it will be a beautiful day. >> the marine layer is thick enough that we're seeing a light mist on the coast. likely a lot of spot as long the coast and in the hills of peninsula, east bay hills but a little less than there was yesterday after lot has to do with the fact the clouds have risen a bit. >> daytime high today around 80 for much of the south bay. 80 in palo alto. 75 for heyward. we will be in the mid 80s for daytime highs for our inland east bay communities, slightly

warmer than what we have been doing. it will be low 70s for the east bay shoreline. low 80s for inland sonoma county and mid-90s for much of lake and men ta see no county. >> there is some good news here. even though 98 will be warm by next saturday, that warming trend that gets us there looks a little less intense than it did yesterday, but this needs to be watched. after the fourth of july it will be how hot will next weekend be? >> fireworks in san francisco in the fog are like charlie brown and lucy with a football. every year kind of same story. >> you get your hopes up and lucy pulls the ball away. but there are a few comic strip or maybe one where charlie brown hit the ball. you might still get a good show there. >> thanks so much. >> good morning. you better stick around for this one because i have a stack

well, welcome back. it is 6:29. i'm devin fehely. let's start with a check of our weather with meteorologist darren peck. >> we'll take a quick tour of the gray this morning. no surprise. just like the last week, everyone is waking up to it. certainly here at the golden gate bridge where the clouds are obscuring the towers on the bridge, that is an important detail.

we'll come back later with the complete forecast about why. >> it is gray here. everyone is right around 60 but santa rosa is a call 65. daytime highs, we all get sunshine except the immediate coast and through the golden gate bridge. we'll wake up in the 80s. low 70s in the bay. see what the rest of the fourth of july forecast in a bit. rescue crews are searching for a man they say went missing while kayaking on the river access. it is full of swimmers this fourth of july weekend. people who say the man was kayaking with a woman when they tipped into the water. the woman was able to make it back to shore but the 30-year- old man didn't resurface. this particular area is known for its dangerous depth. with low water levels and unpredictable conditions, crews were ready to respond. >> with the shallow water we

are seeing, there are a lot more rocks and shrubbery. >> even the strongest of swimmers can be a pulled under with these condition. they are using sonar for the missing kayaker. a violent confrontation. protesters. a woman complained about the woman in the spa. >> reporter: violent clashes between demonstrators and the lapd. officers in tactical gear. >> these demonstrators showed up to support tranz rights and a business that came under fire this week over a viral video. she complained a plan was in the women's section on the day spa. the employee in the video says the customer is tranz and the spa follows the law in not discriminating against any tranz person. >> they get to make that call.

the police put him in handcuffs and took him away from the crowd. by 12:30, there was unlawful assembly and they ur ushrd the crowds off the streets. after 40 minutes the chaos appeared over. >> we have been told there are other demonstrations planned today in support of trans rights at maccarthur park. new this morning, tyson food rice calling millions of pounds of the ready to eat chicken after a possible link was found with contamination of listeria. they are connecting two reported cases to the t precooked frozen chicken and they are recalling nearly 8.5 pounds of chicken production. the production subject to the recall have the following establishment number p-7089. 11 men are in custody in

massachusetts after a standoff with state police which forced two towns to shelter in place. the men were armed with guns and dressed in tactical gear and they said they were going to maine for training. >> reporter: the hours-long road side standoff with readily armed men in tactical gear. >> they were standing with long guns. it raises concerns and not consistent with the firearms law here in massachusetts. >> reporter: the men took off in a wooded area after refusing to put down their weapons. it triggered shelter in place warnings for wakefield and redding. >> we were able to successfully

>> reporter: residents could hear it before they saw it. graphic video shows a river of dark mud barreling down a mountain and into a hot spring resort area about 70 miles southwest of tokyo. witness reports described a horrific sound as ten houses were wiped out in a matter of minutes. this driver tried to get around the debris but ended up getting caught by the on slot. the town's mayor ordered more than 20,000 households evacuated in what he called the worst such disaster in decades. trig determined by unusually heavy downpours, the mudslide raced along at an estimated speed of 25 miles per hour. several dozen troops joined police and firefighters in the rescue and cleanup. across central and eastern japan, tens of thousands of

residents were ordered to evacuate as rivers rose to dangerously high levels. the country's weather agency warned more rain is in store over the next few days. now to the dangerous conditions along the southern california coast this hold. forecasters are warning of high surf and rip currents at beaches. >> reporter: it was quite a show in newport beach as the mighty pacific showed her strength to the joy of those in the water and on the sand. the taylor family got up before sunrise to drive for the coast. >> i wanted my kids to see it when we were young. we always check surf line and it is always worth the drive. >> reporter: those in the water didn't complain either. they were searched where the

jetty meets the sand at the wedge. >> it is hard to explain. it is just different this morning. there is like multiple different ones in the wa ter and forming a funny wave. >> although the waves are in straighting, if you're not an experienced swimmer in the ocean, you're told to enjoy them from the sand because the high waves and rip currents can lead to dis astor in the water. >> there was a beach hazardous statement with ten foot waves and swells up to 6 feet for other south facing beaches in orange county. >> i, myself, have not dropped into a 1 5-footer but a lot of guys told me it was the thrill of their life and that is why they are still out here. a you're not ready for that? >> i'm getting close. >> getting close. >> reporter: although it is fun to frollick, underestimating the power and agility of the ocean is a mistake no surfer

wants to make. in newport beach, joy benedict, cbs news. >> some pretty amazing video of those surfers wiping out, but the only thing that people here locally as concerned ought bo is fireworks and fog. what do you have? >> a good example of what to expect later today. it is showing you a fairly low ceiling on those clouds. you can see the tops of the towers are pretty much in it. that is the south tower of the golden gate bridge sitting 740 feet high and gives you a good idea how low the clouds are. if that is how it is at 9:00 tonight it could be an issue for fireworks. not a guarantee but if you look at the forecast for 9:00 tonight, we'll certainly have seen the marine layer come back over the bay but by sunset it starts to creep back in.

likely forecast on the fair works, plan on clouds. and not a worst case scenario. y'all see somening but it is likely going to be impeded. the other part of the fourth of july forecast, what about the rest of the day? couldn't have asked for a better forecast. low to mid 80s for inland spots. at the beach it will stay gray all day. it is gray over the tri-valley. the marine layer made its way in land and 59, same as san jose. they are waking up to gray skies today. we have been doing this for the last week solid. we'll continue for the next several days solid. by the end of the week, the pattern will change a bit. you can see where we are at 2:00 p.m. today, still gray for the west half of the city. everybody else should have sun.

a little bit of a mist, too. daytime high today under sunshine. we'll go to 80 in palo alto. union city hits 76. 82 in downtown san jose. mid 80s for the valleys of the inland east by, our warmers spot being brentwood at 93. there is danville coming in at 85. warming up into the low to mid- 70s along the bay shoreline. santa rose' with you in the upper 70s. then we see it jump into the low to mid 90s for daytime highs. still keeping an eye on where the smoke front wildfires burning in the state are heading. the most noticeable way up in the far northern third of the state. a look at elsa which will pass

farvacation. the chosen destination, hawaii. no surprise for this 18-year- old east bay resident, a big fan of being seaside. >> even at the beach when you hear people just having fun in the water, it is really interesting, calmk and it brings me joy. >> thisy my african-american honor award. >> reporter: the gift for the graduate headed to u.c.l.a. this fall majoring in biology, but not. first in her family to go to college. >> she was going to graduate from uc san diego. that students, alyssa's mother, a budding artist, struggling with a debilitating illness. >> right after i was born my mother was found to have it. it is a disease. >> reporter: medical treatment and family support would help at first but alyssa said her mom eventually stopped taking her medication. there was violence in the home.

soon alyssa's grandmother would take over parenting duties full full-time. it was really hard when i knew her when she was somewhat okay and that was like losing a mom. >> reporter: also lost, alyssa's own voice buried by grief. a.i. didn't want to claim any of this. i never told my story until a friend actually went through something similar with her mom and that is where i found a lot of comfort. >> reporter: comfort found in telling her story to others and freedom in reconnecting with her mother, not in person but through art, the activity recalling a happy childhood memory. the two have rarely seen one another since, but alyssa is back to painting. >> last summer i started painting and i'm not like the best but i do have a creative side. >> reporter: she is nurture her add venture russ side taking summer school course and taking
