good morning. i'm diane king hall. anne-marie green is off. we begin with a big development out of florida at the site of that condo complex collapse. late last night, crews in surfside set off controlled explosives to bring downing the still-standing portion of the building. it's a big step in resuming the search for survivors and allows crews to cake more aggressive help make search efforts safer. the partial collapse of the sham chain towers south condo is now a complete collapse. explosives were detonated inside the still-standing portion at about 10:30 last night. the 12-story structure tumbled seconds. >> honestly, this precise moment i feel relief.

i feel relief because this building was unstable, it was hampering our search efforts. >> reporter: search and rescue crews resumed work just a few hours after the detonation. the demolition was not expected to happen for several weeks, but it was deemed necessary when the engineers determined the structure had shifted and could fall. the approach of tropical storm elsa added urgency to the decision. >> the hurricane is going to turn out to have probably been a blessing in disguise because there's an area of that mound which we were not able to work in safely. and theis is going to open up wide the area. >> reporter: officials send removing the threat of a collapse would give access crews more attention to the site. >> to bring the building down in a westward direction so the debris pile that exists with victims in is it not affecting. >> reporter: a group of residents hoped it would be delayed so they could retrieve pets. once sought a court order to allow her to enter the building.

the judge said he sympathized with her plight but would not second guess the experts who said the tower was unsafe. now crews are closely monitoring elsa as this storm approaches florida today. the outer bands of the storm could hit the keys later today. disorganized now. winds around 60 miles per hour. the reason it's having trouble

getting its act together is because it's interacting with jamaica and cuba. as it moves northwest it will continue to interact with cuba. tuesday it will be near the keys in southwest florida producing heavy rain in key west, naples up to ft. myers. then the system moves north and probably will make landfall close to the tampa bay area early on wednesday morning. and then move up toward jacksonville. look at thursday -- along the carolina coast, probably as a weak tropical system. we don't expect this to become a major hurricane, let's say. because of that it's rainfall that is the four to eight inches possible. >> now across the country, people celebrated the fourth of july holiday in a very different fashion than last year. despite the progress on beating the pandemic, the country still fell short of meeting president biden's vaccination goal. as of now, just over 67% of american adults have received at least one dose of a covid-19 vaccine. that's close to mr. biden's goal

>> we're going to work with our state and local partners to make sure we're doing everything we can to stop the spread of the disease. we are in day three of one of the largest cyberattacks on record targeting a company which manages software updates worldwide. in a statement on its website, the company said teams, quote, continue to work around the clock to resolve the issue and restore our customers to service, end quote. the ceo says it's likely thousands of clients are affected. mostly small businesses. >> these are people that they have small businesses, they employ 10 to 30 people, and this is serious for them. this is -- this is like, oh, my god, their customers are like, okay, we trust you for our i.t., what's goinging on? >> the fbi is part of a federal investigation into the attack, believed to be carried out by a russia-linked group responsible for similar previous attacks. ten men and a minor have now

been charged after a bizarre standoff in massachusetts over the weekend. the group said they were en route to paramilitary training. they were wearing camouflage and body armor, and they initially fled into the woods when confronted. police dliescribed a dangerous scene. >> 11 armed individuals standing with long guns slung on an interstate highway at 2:00 in the morning. certainly raises concerns. and is not consistent with the firearms laws that we have here in massachusetts. >> the confrontation shut down a stretch of highway during a busy holiday weekend. the men have been jailed on a range of charges. pope francis is recovering right now after successfully undergoing surgery last night. the pope received anesthesia and was operated on in a hospital in rome. a spokesman said he, quote, responded well to the surgery. tina cross with the details. >> reporter: the vatican says

84-year-old pope francis underwent surgery sunday on his large intestine at a hospital in rome. the vatican issued a statement saying the procedure was successful. according to the vatican, the pope was diagnosed with symptomaticnarrowing in the large intestine. >> it tightens, the opening gets smaller and smaller with time. because you have more and more and more scarring with every attack of diverticulitis. >> reporter: the pope greeted the crowd saying he would visit hungary and slovakia in september. last week the pontiff asked for special prayers for himself without going into details. this would mark pope francis' first known hospital treatment since he became head of the roman catholic church in 2013. tina kraus, cbs news, london. more than 1,000 first responders are still wading through a giant mudslide in

year due to the pandemic. more than 65,000 shells and effects were shot from five barges. there was a fireworks show over the nation's capital. they were set off from both sides of the lincoln memorial's reflecting pool. president biden and the first lady watched from the white house. earlier in the day, mr. biden said the u.s. is emerging from the covid-19 pandemic stronger than ever. >> all across this nation we can say with confidence america is coming back together. [ cheers ] >> the president also spoke directly to service members saying it's his greatest honor to serve as commander in chief. tainted frozen chicken may be linked to one death, and there's been an arrest in connection with a botched fireworks detonation. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." cbs los angeles reports a 27-year-old man was charged in connection with last week's

illegal fireworks explosion in a south los angeles neighborhood. the blast took place during what was supposed to be a controlled police fireworks detonation. 17 people were hurt including officers and a federal agent. police say 27-year-old arturo ceja was charged with illegally transporting 32,000 pounds of fireworks from nevada. "usa today" says tyson foods is recalling about 8.5 million pounds of ready-to-eat frozen chicken products because of possible listeria contamination. the recall includes tyson branded products and private label merchandise for restaurants. the cdc says the products which were shipped nationwide to retailers and institutions may be linked to a listeria outbreak that killed one person and sickened three others. and "the washington post" reports the vatican indicted ten people including a once-powerful italian cardinal for alleged financial crimes. they were charged following a two-year investigation into a botched london real estate

things did not go well at a planned fireworks show in ocean city, maryland. fireworks accidentally exploded yesterday as they were being set up on the beach. several employees of the fireworks company received minor injuries. the city announced that scheduled fireworks shows in several locations had been canceled out of an abundance of caution. no beach-goers were hurt. at least 11 people were hurt in a massive explosion at a factory in thailand. a fire broke out at a manufacturing facility just outside the city's airport. the explosion shook an airport terminal and shattered windows at nearby homes. authorities evacuated a three-mile area because of fears leaking chemicals could cause more explosions. no word what caused the fire. and the death toll from a philippine air force plane crash has risen to 50. the transport many was -- plane was

>> my mom and i garden a lot, and i have nothing. >> reporter: why are some more prone to bites than others? >> one thing that scientists have known for a long time is that mosquitoes are attracted to the odor of used gym socks. >> reporter: university of minnesota entomologist dr. jon oliver has the unexpected explanation. >> they're being attracted to that kind of mix of bacteria and fungus that causes foot odor. that's why mosquitoes often bite people on their feet and ankles. >> reporter: dr. oliver says mosquitoes can also be drawn to people for genetic reasons. some people metabolize food in a certain way and emit a certain smell. so it may not be that you're unclean, it might be your particular odor attracts the bugs? >> absolutely. if you had two perfectly clean people next to each other who had the same bathing regimen, one could still be bitten more than the other. >> reporter: it's not in our heads.
