good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we're going to begin this morning with a dangerous surge of coronavirus cases across the nation. new infections are on the rise in all 50 states, and experts are sounding the alarm. despite the spike, a new cbs news poll finds that 66% of americans approve of how president biden is handling the pandemic. overall, 64% of americans believe the u.s. is dealing with the pandemic well compared to the 65% who thought we weren't in january. our polling also found americans are concerned about the highly contagious delta variant which is helping to fuel the new outbreak. laura podesta is in new york. laura, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. surprisingly the cbs news poll found that vaccinated people are far more likely to be concerned about the delta variant compared to unvaccinated folks. 72% compared to 48%. you'd think it would be the opposite.

as we've been reporting, experts say you are far less likely to be hospitalized with extreme covid symptoms if you have been vaccinated. covid is on the rise in the united states. >> 97% of the hospitalizations are in people who are unvaccinated. most of the deaths occurring now are in people who are unvaccinated. >> reporter: new cases have spiked almost 70% over the past week. >> for most people who get the delta variant, it's going to be the most serious virus they get in their lifetime in terms of putting them in the hospital. >> i've never been hospitalized except for the birth of my children. >> reporter: yvonne thinks she and her family got covid at her daughter's outdoor graduation party last month. she spent five days in the hospital with double new mexico and has since been on oxygen 24 hours a day. >> terrified of not being here to see my daughter off to college. not being able to take care of

my family -- i was terrified. >> reporter: to clamp down on the virus in los angeles county a mask mandate went into effect over the weekend. >> if that's what we have to do that's what we'll do. >> reporter: despite rising numbers in the united kingdom almost all restrictions were lifted today. brits celebrated at midnight by crowding into clubs to party. >> are they going to -- >> that's what i'm worried about. are we going to be back into another lockdown. >> still going to make the most of it. >> reporter: uk prime minister johnson is in a ten-day quarantine after coming into close contact with his health secretary who recently tested covid positive and is experiencing mild symptoms. anne-marie? >> wow. laura podesta in new york. thank you so much. firefighters are racing to contain at least 70 wildfires raging out of control in the western u.s. the largest blaze, the bootleg fire, burning in southern oregon exploded in size yesterday.

it swelled to nearly 300,000 acres fueled by dry and windy conditions. officials issued another round of evacuations. the fire which is 22% contained has burned more than 150 homes and buildings and is threatening thousands more. meantime, fire crews are gaining an upper hand on a wildfire burning in northern california. officials say the beckworth complex fire is 82% contained. another fire east of sacramento has burned more than 18,000 acres and is not contained at all. at least 188 people are dead, and hundreds more are missing after europe was hit with unprecedented flooding. germany and belgium were two of the hardest hit countries after a massive rainstorm last week. crews are working to find victims and clean up the destruction left behind. these satellite images show the devastation caused by flooding the torrenti rigge

reniti > , l searching for suspects today after gunfire erupted outside the washington nationals baseball stadium. three people were shot on saturday in what police are calling a shoot-out. no one was hurt inside the ballpark, but the violence caused the game to be interrupted and some fans rushed for the exits. kris van cleave was there when shots rang out and report on the chaos and confusion that followed. >> reporter: panic at the ballpark. fans by the hundreds raced to escape nationals park in washington, d.c., after gunfire echoed through the stadiums. the shots heard on the telecast in the middle of the sixth inning. players rushed their families and fans into the dugouts. others hugged cement walls for cover fearing a shooter was inside the park. >> people are running. >>tewas om wherey situation.

e who di r sea. and this fan was overcome by emotion. >> we start leaving and another bang, near the center gate. more people start running out. >> reporter: the shooting actually happened outside the stadium. three people were wounded, all are expected to survive. >> we don't want anybody getting hurt. so like i said, for me, yesterday i tried to protect as many people as possible. >> reporter: d.c. police are looking for a toyota. >> one vehicle pulls up. another pulls up next to it, another engages the first vehicle in gunfire. an uninvolved citizen that was attending the game but outside the stadium was struck. >> reporter: saturday's violence came less than 24 hours after another drive-by shooting killed a 6-year-old and wounded five adults. police released video of this sedan where someone can be seen firing out a window. >> the cowards who committed this crime, came into this community without any regard for human life, without regard for

nia's life. >> reporter: there is now a $60,000 reward for information in this case. earlier this month, washington surpassed 100 homicides faster than in any year since 2003. kris van cleave, cbs news, washington. amazon founder jeff bezos is set to make his first trip to space. he'll take off tomorrow in a rocket developed by his aerospace company blue origin from a site in texas. bezos will be joined by 82-year-old aviator wally funk. she will become the oldest person to travel to space. also on board is an 18-year-old dutch teenager who will be the youngest person to ever venture into space. bezos' brother will also be on board. jeff bezos is on track to make history for taking part in the first unpiloted suborbital flight with a civilian crew. so coming up, olympic surprise. why tennis star coco gauff is

"the washington post" reports democrats and republicans are struggling to complete an infrastructure proposal as the senate barrels toward a key deadline. democrats plan to vote this wednesday to begin debate on a roughly $1 trillion infrastructure package. meetings between the white house and top lawmakers continued this weekend after senators dropped a proposal to pay for infrastructure through better enforcement of tax laws. democrats are also trying to push through a separate $3.5

trillion spending bill through a process called reconciliation. it would advance the measure without republican support and avoid the 60-vote threshold that's typically needed. cbs sports says tennis star coco gauff will miss the olympics after testing positive for covid-19. the 17-year-old made the announcement on twitter yesterday. she said that she hopes there will be more chances to represent team usa in the future. the summer olympics start on friday after being postponed from last year. concern is growing over danger of the virus spreading with 55 con fillered cases linked to the games including officials and contractors. and khou reports nearly 30 people were treated at hospitals after a chemical leak at a texas water park. it happened saturday in the kiddie pool at six flags hurricane harbor splash town. officials say a mixture of chemicals including sulfuric acid caused people to have irritated skin and breathing problems.
