we begin with the start of the tokyo olympics. the opening ceremonies take place this morning, but the reality of the coronavirus outbreak is castinga dark shadow over the games. today organizers said three more competitors tested positive for the virus. the number of reported cases among people accredited for the olympics is now more than 100 since the beginning of the month. and that includes five american athletes like volleyball player taylor crabb, tennis star coco gauff, and nba player bradley beal, all sidelined from the competition. tokyo remains under a state of emergency with nearly 2,000 cases reported yesterday. the highest number since january. first lady jill biden is in tokyo where she met with the wife of japan's prime minister today. she also held a virtual meeting with american athletes. this is her first solo international trip as first lady as she leads the u.s. diplomatic delegation at the olympics. so here in the u.s. the cdc

is calling this a pivotal moment in the fight against covid-19. the agency's director, rochelle walensky, described the delta variant as one of the most infectious respiratory viruses seen in her 20-year career. the con stages strain accounts for more than 80 cases across the nation. laura podesta is in new york tracking the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the delta variant has led to a surge in hospitalizations, but also a slight uptick in vaccinations. this as more than 610,000 americans have now died from covid-19. new cases of covid-19 are mostly in states with low vaccination rates. >> this week just three states, florida, texas, and missouri, accounted for 40% of all cases nationwide. >> reporter: some good news -- white house health officials noted vaccination rates are going up in states being hit hardest.

>> we need to come together as one nation unified in our resolve to protect the health of ourselves, our children, our community, our country, and our future. >> reporter: missouri has seen a bump in vaccinations, but officials at local hospitals say they're already suffering. >> we've had days in the last few weeks where 100% of our icu patients were ventilated. >> reporter: mercy hospital's chief administrator says the next few weeks will get worse as the highly contagious delta variant circulates unchecked. >> it's making people sicker. it's getting into a younger population. last year communities wore masks and social distancing. restaurants have been at capacity. that's all gone away. >> reporter: over the last week, louisiana reported its biggest increase in hospitalizations since the spring of 2020. just over one in three residents are fully vaccinated. >> the pressure that this amount of patients puts on us we can't do a great job every day. it's impossible. >> reporter: overseas italy has

joined france in requiring proof of vaccination or of a negative test to participate in certain activities like visiting a museum or eating indoors. france saw more than one million people book an appointment for the vaccine in the 24 hours after that announcement was made a month ago. anne-marie? >> wow. laura podesta in new york. thank you so much. developing this morning, bullets fly in a busy area of washington, d.c., leaving two people injured. police say the shooting happened last night on a street filled with restaurants and bars. people ran for cover. two men were shot. one victim was possibly targeted, and the other may have been an innocent bystander. police say their injuries are not life threatening. witnesses heard up to 30 shots. >> my girlfriend said, i keep hearing shots. my friend who came from out of town was walking down the street, and i immediately called him and said you need get in a

building right now. he heard the shots and saw people running. terrifying scene. i didn't realize the car went down here because we ran up. and it was -- most frightening experience. >> police released surveillance video two of suspects running into what's described as an older black sedan that drove away. the violence in our nation's capital comes as the justice department launches a crackdown on illegal guns plaguing cities. yesterday the attorney general toured a support center hours after another outburst of gunfire. jeff pegues has more. >> reporter: three mass shootings in one of america's most violent cities wednesday night. 18 shot including eight on this party bus that was attacked. >> we are experiencing drive-by shootings much more than we've seen in the last several decades. >> reporter: chicago murders

overall are down slightly this year but up 50% from two years ago. the violence here and in four other cities has prompted the department of justice to launch gun strike forces, teams that will try to chase down the illegal weapons before they're used in urban warfare. chicago police have recovered nearly 7,000 illegal guns. a 25% rise from last year. many of which were smuggled into the city. >> our job is also, of course, to go after the sources of those guns and the networks that feed those guns to the places where they are doing the most violent crime. >> reporter: but federal efforts to reduce gun crime have rarely had much of an impact. chicago residents we spoke with remain on edge. would you allow your grandmother, your mother to walk these streets alone at night? >> no -- >> reporter: or just together at night? >> no. >> reporter: it's not safe at night here. >> no.
