joining us. let's start a quick check with our meteorologist darren pack. cooler today. especially for those locations inland daytime highs for much of the bay area only going into the upper 80s yesterday. low 90s yesterday about a three or four degree drop thanks for a strong enough on shore flow. temperatures in the bay in the upper 60s. cloudy with a deck of mid level clouds passing through. we'll bring the marine layer back to the coast by the time we get into the afternoon. 87 in concord. 80 in santa rosa. two nasty crashes in the south bay overnight. check out this video in the newsroom. the first crash occurred after midnight witnesses say it appears that one of thear driving the wrong way on southbound 280 when it collided head on with the truck. two victims were pulled from the cars no word on their condition this morning. the second in millpedes one

car involved in a roll over accident. two people ejected from the car and treated on the scene. their injuries remain unknown poli weregs they boths morni joe occurred late last night. the first shooting happened on biscayne way just before 9:00. police say there is one victim there with life threatening injuries the second shooting happened near la cetia avenue after 9:00 last night. the victim involved sustained long life threatening injuries. there's no suspect or motive information at this time and maintain those two shootings are not related. we'll bring you updated on incidents once we get them. developing this morning, an investigation is underway in contra costa county after a shooting on highway 4 left one person dead last night. it happened just after 6:30 p.m. in concord along the westbound

lanes near the port chicago highway off ramp. here's video the aftermath, the windows shot out of a black toyota camera that crashed into the metal guardrail. a child seat was spotted inside the car. not clear if there was a child traveling in the car during the shooting. we know one of the victims die dd and another wounded. the suspect still at large when the chp shut down all westbound lanes of highway 4 to collect evidence. the closure created this massive back up that stretched for miles. the highway reopened after midnight. here's some developing news this morning, a deadly shooting rocked a quiet north bay city. i man opened fire less than two blocks away from a san raphael nightclub saturday night. two people killed and four others hurt. kpix 5 spoke to the nightclub owner and witness who says the shooting was like a scene out of movie. he gave us a look at the damage left behind. >> a witness tells me a gunmen

fired his automatic rifle from across the street. check out the bullet holes in the garage from concrete pillars and door ways to these glass fronts. >> my friends and i returning from a pub crawl and celebrating a birthday. we saw a man holding a ak 47 style weapon holding it hip level. >> the gunmen fired at people inside the parking ga rablg raj. he and 8 friends ran in a build to go hide. >> it was rather jarring. we were a couple beers deep so the emotions came later. when the adrenaline wears off the horror of the situation sets in. >> multiple victims drove away in different cars someone dropped off a man at ma rin health medical center investigators say the fa man died from his gunshot wounds. police also found this car with two gunshot victims.tockton man died at the scene.

police say in total, the gun fire killed 2 and injured 4. including a homeless man who was sleeping near the garage. >> definitely an isolated incident for san raphael. no threat to the public safety. >> the shooting happened around 10:30 friday night. the other victims either attended or were going to george nightclub for a rap concert. the club two blocks away from the parking garage. >> no fights and arguments inside. >> and we were like 250 people inside. >> the club owner says they have nothing to do with the shooting and they can't control who comes to the club. she says the police ordered them to stop booking anymore rap concerts i cannot do this event anymore. not pop up events. they told me too early, it's hard when they say that. >> the big question is why and what led to the shooting police don't have a motive and they're

still looking for the gunmen. in san raphael i'm da lynn, kpix five. the flames forcing firefighters to retreat to safety. the tower blaze jumped from tree top to tree top and roared into mru mass county near the community of indian falls burning homes and forcing residents to flee. the massive 181,000 acre blaze is now just 20% contained and threatening thousands of homes. the fire has now surpassed the acreage burned in the deadly 2018 campfire. the burn scar is just to the south of the dixie fire. it was raining ash and dark skies. everyone had this worried ominous feeling and you can tell there was panic. >> directly right in the direction of our house. out of all the things that i think i would be upset about is family pictures. i have a picture of my sister and i with my grandma. >> meantime another place just a

few miles from the dixie fire is marching towards several communities in plumas fire. a tinderbox feeding the 65,000 acre tam rick fire. fire crews are gaining ground on the flames in the highway 395 corridor. a live look at oakland this morning. one million almeida county residents are fully vaccinated and health officials are scrambling to convince those hesitant to get a shot. john ramos gives us alook at the widespread push for vaccinations in the east bay this weekend. when the vaccines first became available they opened huge mega sites that could vaccinate hundreds and thousands of people per day. but that was the low hanging fruit. today the struggle against peon at tim being waged one the fight against thecororus ot

in hayward's cherry land district. >> the big mega centers starded dwindling and going the hard to reach communities and going out where they are at. >> a community group called la fa meal ya offered free groceries and ice cream to entice people to get the vaccine. it was the news that cases are again on the rise because of the delta variant that convinced mom to drive over from tracy to get her first shot. >> i just don't want to take it. but because of the second virus coming i'm kind of scared so that's why i'm here. >> this morning the oakland zoo offered free family passes for anyone getting vaccinated but only 20 people took them up on the offer including la count rollins who had to ignore a lot of scary rumors circulating on the streets. >> it's not for colored people

people getting blood clots and this and that. >> that's the kind of stuff you're hearing? >> all negative stuff they hear the same things in antioch the least vaccinated city so they held a clinic at the local boys and gurls club today and a volunteer talked a reluctant man greg into getting his shot. which drew a round of applause from the crowd. >> this is serious. got to take precaution. you're reluctant? >> i was at first. >> why? >> i heard stories. sitting around here. i decided to do it. >> but i told him i hung a tv up in my backyard and if he wasn't vaccinated he couldn't watch football. so he went ahead and got it done. >> free food, free passes, peer pressure and whatever it takes to get people vaccinated. volunteers say misinformation and the delta variant are prolonging the life of a pandemic that has ended the lives of far too many.

in east bay, john ramos, kpix 5. this morning a 25-year old man is facing hate crime charges in connection with an assault on an elderly asian man at a hayward gas station. witnesses say this the suspect asked the victim if he was asian and slapped the man across the face. this happened back on july 5th on historian boulevard. he's facing charges of assault and inciting a fight. when police arrived both the victim and the suspect left the gas station but a social media post with the photo of the suspect's license mraelt was given to police. police say without the communities involvement the case wouldn't have been solved. happening today the asian cultural center holds a soft reopening welcoming visitors back to its facility. several asian chefs based in the bay area will speak at an event called food lion mapping culture to conversation. it happens today at the asian oakland asian cultural center on

9th street. capacity is limited to 80 people and advance registration is required. a live look out at san francisco where a group of frustrated parents took to the street in school buses to drive home their message. it's part of an awareness campaign to recall three board members. they say the commissioners are not doing enough to reopen schools safely and as a result many students have fallen behind in the pandemic. the group hopes to get enough signatures by september to qualify for a recall election. a northern california fire department is facing staffing shortage still ahead on kpix 5 and streaming on cbsn bay area, how that situation is affecting the community as wildfire season heats up. plus, would you pay a fee to drive on clogged san francisco streets? the controversial proposal to charge drivers.

out with the forecast looking ahead to tomorrow night into tuesday morning. small chance, 20% chance we could see a few isolated thunderstorms make their way into the bay area. this si slightlfe hadeekgo yngethes tave morehaf moisture tor wh mng get any ligs 20% chance. there should be some rain that goes along with it. look where the storms are now. a lot going on in arizona. classic, it's been a good summer for the desert monsoon with plenty of thunderstorms. if you look at it in a slightly different way, you see a well organized circulation. see it on the water vapor. that is going to continue moving west. it's going to be driver an easterly wave is what we call one of those coming from the east and it's going to take all this moisture wit i he southwest aus i here by the e

get into monday night and tuesday morning. it also gives it just enough energy to develop this into scattered thunderstorms so it's all got to come together just right. let me show you what a long sho this is. if we look at future cast i'm playing us ahead into the time frame. right there, that's tuesday morning. predawn. maybe a few isolated showers working their way up through the east bay and right off the coast. into the north bay and that's it. so again, it's not a very likely scenario. but it's enough of a possibility we have got to watch it and we'll do that real closely over the next few days. the other thing to keep an eye on is the smoke coming off the fire in the sierra. the deeper shade of purple the higher concentrations of smoke that's the dixie fire. the smoke is generally going to get nudged further our way. this gets into monday. we're looking at the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere. let me show you what it's like

at the ground. better situation. so two different ways to look at this. in other words, we'll probably pull in enough smoke and it will look hazy off in the distance but shouldn't be too much of anw to mid 80s in the south bay. daytime highs for the east bay value valleying in the upper 80s. upper 80s to low 70s and seeing temperatures in the low 80s for the valley of ma rin and low 80s up in sonoma and as we go further north temperatures will get into the low 90s and seven day forecast for san francisco oakland and san jose saw shows you no big swings in the temperatures and as we look across the inland valleys of the east bay on the top line and valleys of the north bay, again no major swings. naomi osaka fire department is struggling with staff shortages in the middle of peak fire season. fewer firefighters mean that some trucks ie h a few crew to

run them. station 17 responded with one truck so a station further away had to come and help. the firefighters union say the situation is affecting response times. first and foremost it's a community in public safety and obvious the safety of members exposed to additional workloads and they're exposed to the additional workloa ho the fire department says that early retirements vacation and covid related delays and training are all factors in the staffing shortage. good morning, everybody the a's not again. and the giants a tough night at the office. i'll tell you one thing it was good to see this guy at

amp and noticeably cooler today. if you're inland you get a 4-5 degree drop from where you were yesterday. in general, that's daytime highs in the upper 80s and upper 60s in the bay. low 60s at the beaches. let me put specific number ounce this day. fremont going to 78. city stays in the mid 60s more on the complete forecast, coming up in a bit. to the coronavirus, the highly contagious delta variant has become the dominant strain here in the u.s. cases are rising again and public health officials are mraeding with people again to get their shots. cbs news corespondent michael george has more. >> in burbank, california workers are converting a floor of this hospital back into a covid-19 ward. >> in a lot of ways it's like going backwards nursing managers says only six weeks ago the hospital held a celebration because it had no covid patients. >> after the fourth of july when

ruling. taking a live look at tokyo japan on the second full day of the summer olympics. organizers are reporting ten new cases of the coronavirus. they include two athletes one in the olympic village bringing the total of game related virus cases to 137. first lady dr. jill biden is back in the united states after attending the opening ceremonies in tokyo. her plane touched down in hawaii on saturday afternoon. hawaii's governor hopes that dr. biden's weekend visit will encourage people to get the vaccine shot. she is the first lady of the united states of america. and certainly her adding her voice to all the local voices one more powerful message about why it's important to get vaccinated. >> today the first lady will visit a mobile vaccine clinic at a local high school. she will also meet with military families before heading back to washington d.c. . back here in the bay area,

watch cbs in bay area with the kpix 5 news app. one of california's most notorious serial killers has died in prison. the dating game killer 77 years old. he had been on death row since 2010 having been convicted of murders of five california women. he later pleaded guilty to committing two murders in new york in the 70s and was a suspect in murders in four other states as well. the dating game killer came from his appearance on the popular game show in 1978. residents in west hollywood unnerved after police say an unconscious women was kidnap from the area's entertainment district early friday morning. candace kroen has that story. that's scary i don't know what i would do in the situation. especially if i was drunk. >> reporter: people who frequent

west hollywood's bar scene are concerned after learning an unconscious women was kidnapped early friday morning. the sheriff deputies say this man put the victim inside his 1997 dodge ram van near robertson and melrose. authorities say she has was completely intoxicated and didn't know whose vehicle she was in. >> i've heard of other people being approached by strangers in cars. i've seen it. >> definitely there's a shift of people moving from other neighborhoods to this kind of neighborhood. but with that comes also things. >> investigators say a witness who saw the suspect with the woman flagged down a deputy to report what happened. diaz was arrested but released on $100,000 bail. the popular night scene attracts people of all backgrounds simply looking for a night. folks we spoke with said while they typically feel safe in the

area they are not letting their guards d try not to look confusr attractive or touristy like you don't know where you're going. look them in the eye when you pass by. >> i try not walk around intoxicated by myself. i always have someone with me. >> if they have contact with the night of the incident to call the sheriff's station. let's get right over to meteorologist darren peck with a check on our local weather. all right, focus in this forecast for the whole seven days second half of monday and tuesday morning. that's when we have a small but still possible chance for more scattered thunderstorms to come back in the bay area. not quite the same set up that we had last week. i'll explain why in one second. first let me show you where it's coming from. this is what the satellite looked like for much of tast few we

t last two dertwest. days happening out here. we're not getting that kind of rain but this is a source where it's all coming from if we switch to the future cast back home looking at the bay and i skipped us ahead into monday. the monday second half of the day tuesday time frame when we would have our best chance to pull in some of these scattered showers and boy, they don't look impressive. there they are. it's tuesday morning, predawn. off the coast maybe in the east bay, and they will take up the first half of the day on tuesday. not a lot to that. but considering how dry the landscape is, no lightning so we'll keep a close eye on how that comes together. a lot of smoke being put into the air. the deeper the shade of purple the higher concentration and that right there is the dixie fire so if we play this over the next few days the smoke is going to slowly get nudged further our way. like the thunderstorms from the southwest. same pattern. mid and upper level smoke more

noticeable and that's what we're seeing here. upper air but i am going to switch this to ground level for the same time frame and doesn't look as bad. the smoke coming our way monday to tuesday will be visible making the sky look hazy but doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be concentrated down here at the fround and we might be able to get off easy with moderate air quality and a few going unhealthy for sensitive groups. daytime highs mid 80s for the south bay. 77 for union city. we'll see the temperatures for the far inland east bays coming into the upper 80s. getting back into the immediate bay shoreline numbers in the mid to upper 60s over here. look at that cool warmer 82 in navato. temperatures in the 90s for much of lake and mendocino county. 7-day forecast for san francisco oakland and san jose. you don't see a lot of difference here but if we look at this slightly different way

the students hear want everyone to know they're here to listen. >> you never know the right thing to say but people are always just so glad to have somebody that's willing to listen to them and i would say that's the most important thing just letting them talk and work through their grief they're dealing with. in the meantime a dog is finally back with its owner after a wild goose chase around mission bay. police officers chased that dog for five hours and animal control officers responded to a call about a dog on the train tracks. when they got there, the frightened dog ran away and hid in the grass also in between the train tracks. after an intense five hour game of hide and seek officers caught up to her and returned her to

it's 6:56. time for a look at this morning's top stories. a shooting shut down a busy highway in concord. it happened just after 6:30 p.m. near the port of chicago highway off ramp. all westbound lanes closed until midnight. so far no arrests. in san raphael someone opened fire at a parking garage near a nightclub holding a concert on friday. two people were killed and four others hurt. a witness says that a man fired an automatic rifle across the street from the garage. gun fire erupted in two incidents about 20 minutes apart last night in san jose. the victim has life threatening

injuries and police believe the two shootings are unrelated. so far they have not identified suspects. the dixie fire is threatening thousands of home in the sierra foothills on saturday wind flames forced firefighters to retreat and more than 280 square miles of fire is now bigger than the deadly campfire from 2018. a 25-year old man under arrest in hayward facing hate crime charges. witnesses say the suspect asked an elderly man if he was asian and then slapped him across the face. it happened at a gas station on july 5th. before we go, we want to remind you that today's national holiday is the national wine and cheese day. offering a fresh reason to indulge in tasty pairings, taste makers are experimenting and recommending new combinations. at the same time cheese merchants try to stay updated on the latest trends but there's probably no wrong way to pair wine and cheese so essentially whatever you like is right.
