i'm anne-marie green. there's new urgency this morning in the fight to slow the surge of the coronavirus cases here in the u.s. state and local governments are imposing tougher restrictions. new york city will require all city workers to get vaccinated by mid september or face weekly testing. it's the same in california. all health care workers and state employees will need to show proof of a covid-19 vaccination or get tested weekly starting next month. in florida which leads the comp country in new infections, governor ron desantis says there's no plan to return to any mandates. >> whatt has this been like for you. >> reporter: 62-year-old curtis sanderlan recently lost his wife from covid-19. now he, too, is battling to survive. did you get the shot? >> no, sir. >> is there a reason why you decided -- >> i haven't decided not to get it, i just haven't --

>> you haven't gotten around to it? >> right. >> more than one out of every five new covid cases in the u.s. are in florida. the state's cases jumped 60% in one week. >> we're going in the wrong direction. if you look at the inflection of the curve of new cases, it is among the unvaccinated. if we don't vaccinate, the model will predict we'll be in trouble as we get more and more cases. >> a ground breaking announcement from the president. long covid is covered under the americans with disabilities act. pfizer and moderna are going to expand the study of kids to the age of 5. and dr. anthony fauci says the cdc is considering revising mask mandates even for the vaccinated. more than 50 organizations are now calling for all health care workers to be required to be

vaccinated. back here at the university of florida health system in jacksonville, only 50% of all workers are fully vaccinated. chad nielsen is the director of vaccine protection. >> they consume the same news and they are just asus septemberible to misinformation and things like that in the communities. >> reporter: but the surge fueled by the more contagious delta variant isn't just affecting the unvaccinated. >> elective procedures are being paused. we're putting off procedures people do need because our hospital is filled with unvaccinated people. >> like curtis san derlan who has this message for the unvaccinated. >> take it. take it. do the right thing. >> cbs news, jacksonville. this morning the congressional investigation into the deadly riot on the u.s. capitol is getting underway.

it's getting back to the causes of the attack. according to a review of court documents, at least 543 are being charged and 23 are pleading guilty and the fbi has yet to identify more than 300 individuals believed to have committed violent acts on the capitol grounds. laura podesta is in new york. what can you tell us about what we can expect today? >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. today we'll hear opening statements, including one from congresswoman liz cheney. the last-minute decision to have cheney speak is to support the argument this party is in fact bipartisan. four officers say they were physically assaulted by the mob on january 6th. >> reporter: 6 1/2 months after a crowd stormed the capitol, they're holding the first

hearing. >> an important opportunity to remind everybody about the necessity of accountability for what happened, for making sure tat it never happens again. >> the first witnesses are four police officers who were at the capitol on july 6th. they were supposed to maintain order and congress certified the results of the 2020 u.s. election. the committee includes 7 democrats and two republicans. house minority leader kevin mccarthy withdrew all five of the nominees after two were rejected. jim jordan and jim banks. >> it makes the whole committee a sham so the outcome is predetermined. you won't get to the bottom of it. >> pelosi responded by appointing two gop lawmakers, liz cheney and adam kinsinger. >> it's not something i was

to be younger than 18. she said one was the driver and the other attacked her. >> well, he pushed me very hard. it's hard to describe what happened because it was so fast but when i started to move away from him, he came behind me, pushed me hard and then before i could fall he grabbed my phone in the front. it's just hard to put it altogether. >> boxer said she's okay physically but shaken up. she represented the senate from 1993 to 2017. turning to the olympics from tokyo where one of the biggest stars in tennis has been elimin eliminated. naomi osaka lost from a czech republic player. she is the number two ranked player in the world. meantime, the americans made a splash in the water. 17-year-old lydia jacoby won the

matthew rosenguard asked that accountant jason reuben be listed as the conservator. california's largest wildfire threatens thousands of homes as it continues to burn out of control. and the last missing victim of the florida condo collapse is identified. those are some of the headlines on the morning newstand. the miami herald reports police have identified the final missing victim from last month's surfside florida condo collapse. 54-year-old ee still hidaya. she was the last of the 98 people who were killed who remain unidentified. the search for victims' remains will continue at the debris site. the sacramento bee said the dixie fire is nearly 2,000 acres. the state's largest fire this

3. the s&p 500 gained 10. tesla reached a financial milestone. they reported a second quarter profit of $1.1 billion yesterday. that's the first time ever it passed a billion during a single quarter. the results beat wall street expectations but tesla warned the momentum could be slowed by a persistent shortage of computer chips. could be lights out for marlboro cigarettes in the u.k. they told "the daily mail" they plan to stop selling cigarettes in brittain in the next ten years. the company said it's investing in lower risk alternatives for consumers. the british government wants to make them snow freebie 2021. serving the world's most
