captioning funded by cbs good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with an aboutface from the cdc in the battle against the coronavirus. the health agency is now recommending everyone including fully vaccinated people wear masks indoors again in areas e thru rap spreading. the updated guidance comes as the nation struggles to contain the highly contagious delta variant. laura podesta is tracking the latest from new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the head of the cdc hopes with these new stricter guidelines that we can outsmart the delta variant. the new guidelines are everyone should resume wearing masks indoors where there are 50 or more infections per 100,000 residents over the previous seven days. the cdc is advising people to go back to wearing masks indoors in

areas with elevated infection rates. that includes more than 60% of the counties in the u.s. >> this is not something that we took lightly and something that i know weighs heavily with me. >> reporter: the guidance applies to even, even those vaccinated. it comes two months after the agency relaxed rules on wearing masks and social distancing. dr. anthony fauci says the advice changed because the virus changed. >> we are dealing with an evasive type of virus. it evolves. >> reporter: scientists say the delta variant is far more contagious and can even be spread by breakthrough infections in immunized individuals. >> the solution to all of this is to get vaccinated and get that 100 million people in the country who are eligible for vaccines, who have not gotten vaccinated to get vaccinated. rd res,

finals. biles said she withdrew because of the emotional strain she's under. you're notng to joy your it's okay sometimes to sit out the big competitions to focus on yourself because it shows how strong of a competitor and person that you really are. >> usa gymnastics says biles will be evaluated before deciding if she will compete in next week's individual events. meantime, superstar swimmer katie ledecky won her first gold medal at the tokyo olympics. she came out on top in the first-ever olympic women's 1,500-meter freestyle race. she won shortly after finishing a disappointing fifth in the 200-meter freestyle. and the u.s. men's basketball team bounced back by defeating iran 120-66.

the americans lost to france in it was team usa's first loss at the olympics since 2004. a powerful tropical storm storm packing torrential rain and gusty winds hit japan's northern coast. it spared tokyo, though, and the olympics where officials feared it would disrupt the games. there were no immediate reports of damage, but authorities urge residents to take caution against mudslides. a georgia man accused of killing eight people in a march shooting rampage at several atlanta area spas pleaded guilty to four of murders. 22-year-old robert aaron long was sentenced to life in prison yesterday. he still faces the death penalty on the other deaths which are being prosecuted separately. six of the victims were asian women. he told police the attacks were not racially motivated. a house panel's investigation into the deadly capitol hill riot got off to an emotional start. four officers described the

panic and terror they faced as a mob of pro-trump supporters stormed the bung in nuary. skyler henry has more. what we were subjected that day was like something from a medieval battle. we fought hand to hand -- inch by inch. >> reporter: four police officers described the terror they endured when the mob of trump supporters attacked the capitol. officer daniel hodges was trapped between the door and rioters and described an attacker as foaming at the mouth. >> if i stay thursday i would pass out from lack of oxygen or get dragged out into the crowd. >> reporter: the severely outnumbered officers said they feared for their lives as the angry crowd closed in. >> you're going to die tonight! >> i could feel my -- myself losing oxygen and recall thinking to myself, this is how >> heard chanting from some in the crowd, "gegun kill wiis gun."

>> reporter: one officer testified the crowd hurled racial slurs at him. >> one woman in a pink maga shirt said, "you hear that, guys, he voted for joe biden." >> reporter: officers urged the committee to place blame for the breach on former trump. >> all of them were telling us trump sent us. >> if a hit man is hired and he kills somebody, the hit man goes to jail, but not only does the hit man go to jail, but the person who hired them does. it was an attack carried out on january 6th, and a hit man sent them. >> reporter: while democrats promise a thorough investigation, many republicans continue to embrace former president trump's downplaying of the attack prompting frustration from officers. >> the indifference shown to my colleagues is disgraceful. >> reporter: nearly 550 people have been arrested in the months since the breach. officials promise more will be held accountable. skyler henry, cbs news, capitol hill. coming up, tv star rushed to the hospital.

"the denver post" says body camera footage shows a colorado officer beating an

unarmed man with his pistol and choking him during an arrest. it happened friday in the suburb of aurora. officers john habard and francine martinez responded to a report of a person trespassing. habard is seen choking and beating the man. he was also heard threatening to kill him. the police chief calls the actions despicable. >> we are trying to do the right thing. we are trying to reform, and we are trying to make a difference. this is not the aurora police department. this was criminal. >> officer habard was arrested and faces felony charges. the other officer faces charges for not intervening. "tulsa world" reports a high-speed chase ended with the oklahoma highway patrol used a pit uvy the suspects reached speeds of at least 130 miles per hour during yesterday's pursuit which started near stillwater. an officer used his car to perform a tactical move which caused the suspect's car to spin out and hit another vehicle. the driver was arrested.

a meteor lit up the night sky over a small texas town. it was captured by a home security camera on sunday. experts say the fireball moved at a slow speed, suggesting it was a small piece of an asteroid. nasa says people in louisiana, arkansas, and oklahoma also spotted the meteor. on the cbs "money watch" now, walmart is sending its employees to school, and pizza hut rolls out its own line of clothing. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with those stories and more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. wall street lost ground from record highs after drops in some big tech stocks including amazon and google's parent alphabet. but after the market closed, alphabet, microsoft, and apple all reported record quarterly earnings. the dow ultimately lost 85 points yesterday. the nasdaq slid 180, and the s&p 500 follow 20. walmart says it will pick up

the full tab for employees who want to further their careers. america's largest retailer will cover 100% of tuition and books at some schools for full and part-time workers enrolled in the company's college tuition program. those enrolled will no longer have to pay a $1-a-day tuition bill or pay for textbooks. more than 52,000 people have taken part in the program since it launched in 2018. check your kitchen cabinet. mccormick and company is recalling three seasonings over possible salmonella contamination. so far no illnesses have been reported. the seasonings include perfect pinch italian, culinary italian, and frank's red hot buffalo ranch. select walmart, target, and kroger locations sold the programs. if you have one, throw it away, and contact the company for a replacement or full refund. and pizza hut is serving up more than od. the fast food chain unveiled its first-ever line of clothing called pizza hut tastewear.

the album was created by the hip-hop band to be a unique piece of art. it has never been released or heard in its entirety publicly. shkreli, serving a seven-year prison sentence for securities fraud, bought the album at auction in 2015 for a reported $2 million. the government said it sold the album to an anonymous buyer to help pay the more than $7 million shkreli owes due to his conviction. no report on what the buyer paid. former president barack obama is teaming up with the nba to expand its presence in africa. mr. obama announced the partnership with nba africa yesterday in a video message. the league says the venture will help advance its social responsibility efforts across the continent. >> by investing in communities, promoting gender equality, and cultivating the love of the game of basketball, i believe that nba africa can make a difference

which just means that they're reaching the end of their useful life. >> reporter: bridges are in trouble nationwide. 42% are at least 50 years old, 220,000 new repair work including the brooklyn bridge and washington, d.c.'s, roosevelt bridge, and nearly 80,000 need to be replaced. pennsylvania officials do not have the more than $20 billion needed to fix their aging infrastructure. >> the federal government, the feds haven't really increased the level of funding that they allocate to the states. >> reporter: transportation secretary pete buttigieg told cbs news the infrastructure plan will help fill the gaps. >> the federal role has been under funded, and you can see it and feel it in the thousands and thousands of miles of highway in this country that are in poor condition. the bridges that are in poor condition. >> reporter: now one of many states waiting to see if congress will come through with the funding it needs. erroll barnett, cbs news,
