and says why she might have quit the sport. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with president biden's new push to get more americans vaccinated. yesterday he said all federal employees must be fully vaccinated against covid, or they'll have to get tested weeklyly, wear masks, and sociay distance. today the cdc will release new information on the delta variant. internal documents first obtained by "the washington post" say the highly contagious strain can spread as easily as chickenpox and make people more sick than other variants. laura podesta with more from new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're learning that this new information was gathered in a cdc investigation of a coronavirus outbreak in the small town of provincetown, massachusetts. and it directly contributed to the recent decision by the cdc to have most of us mask up again indoors. the federal government is

rolling out new strategies to get more people vaccinated against covid-19. >> it's an american blessing that we have vaccines for each and every american. it's a shame. such a shame to squander that blessing. >> reporter: president biden unveiled a new rule requiring federal workers and contractors to get their shots or face regular testing and other restrictions. the pentagon announced a similar mandate for members of the military. the president also urged local governments to offer $100 to vaccine holdouts. >> i know the pain to say get vaccinated might sound unfair to folks who have gotten vaccinated already. here's the deal -- if incentives help us beat this virus, i believe we should use them. >> reporter: mr. biden said the incentives could be paid for with federal pandemic relief money. there are about 100 million unvaccinated people who are eligible to get inoculated. experts blame the surge in cases on the more contagious delta variant.

>> situation is dire. this delta variant that we're seeing now changes the game from my perspective. >> reporter: according to published reports, the cdc found the delta variant spreads as easily as chickenpox and appears to make people more sick than the original virus did. the agency is expected to publish its research today along with a call to, quote, acknowledge the war has changed. cdc director rochelle walensky hinted the research to be published today will show that the amount of coronavirus in a person's nasal passages is considerably high even if they're vaccinated. so breakthrough infections may be more concerning than we thought. >> wow. laura podesta in new york. thank you so much, laura. well, two tornadoes ripped through southeast pennsylvania causing severe damage. at least five people were injured yesterday when the roof of this car dealership collapsed. it's not known just how serious their injuries were, but everyone is accounted for. the national weather service issued flash flood warnings for

parts of the region as it was slammed with up to three inches of rain in a short period of time. no deaths were reported. >> the storm would have been two hours earlier, this would be a different report. those places would have been packed with people, especially packed with workers, and thank god for whatever is good about it, it happened two hours later and not 4:30, 5:00. >> the storm reportedly left more than 8,000 homes and businesses without power. an olympic gymnast is being honored in her home state today for her gold medal win. minnesota governor tim walz declared today sunisa lee day. the 18-year-old was born in st. paul, earned a gold medal for the all-around competition in tokyo yesterday. she said this is a moment that she will never forget. >> this medal definitely means a lot to me because there was a point in time where i wanted to quit, and i just didn't think i would ever get here including injuries and stuff.

the first lady is recovering at the white house this morning after she was treated for a puncture wound on her foot yesterday. dr. jill biden was injured while she was walking on a beach in hawaii last weekend. it's unclear what object punctured her. her spokesperson says that the wound was clear of infection and is expected to heal well. president biden went his wife to the hospital for the procedure. there are covid concerns at a massive music festival in chicago, and a former high-ranking catholic official is in legal trouble. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" says former cardinal theodore mccarrick was charged with sexually assaulting a teenager. court records allege he assaulted the boy during a wedding reception in massachusetts in 1974. he is facing three counts of indecent assault and battery. mccarrick was defrocked in 2019 after a vatican investigation confirmed he sexually molested children and adults.

he's the first cardinal in the u.s. to ever be criminally charged with a sex crime against a minor. "the san diego union tribune" says a san diego-based sailor was charged in connection with a fire that destroyed a navy ship last year. the navy said the sailor was a crew member on the "bonhomme richard" and is accused of starting the fire. the flames burned for four days and caused damage to the ship while it was docked off san diego. the sailor who is facing charges including aggravated arson has denied responsibility for the fire. the "chicago tribune" said lollapalooza kicked off yesterday at chicago's grant park. the music festival opened amid concerns of rising covid cases. attendees must show proof that they've been vaccinated against the virus or that they've tested negative within the last three days. >> i have my vaccine card. >> vaccine cards. >> tests. >> test.
