we begin with the growing number of americans getting vaccinated against the coronavirus as the highly contagious delta variant spreads. the white house says the u.s. has reached president biden's goal of 70% of adults receiving at least one shot. it's a goal mr. biden hoped to reach a month ago. and south carolina senator lindsey graham has tested positive for covid-19 after being vaccinated. he says he has mild symptoms and he's very glad he received the vaccine or he could be in worse shape. bradley blackburn has the very latest from new york. bradley, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. the cdc is echoing senator graham reminding people these vaccines work against the delta variant. in more places we are seeing calls for vaccine mandates. >> covid-19 vaccinations are on the rise but more people are getting infected as well. >> the numbers that we're seeing

are unbelievable. >> as the u.s. reached president biden's goal to get 70% of the adults partially vaccinated, the focus is on the millions who have had no shots. >> 100% of the people in my icu in the intensive care unit are unvaccinated. >> reporter: white house coronavirus jeff zeinst said the delta variant has renewed the demand for vaccines. >> in the states with the highest case rates, daily vaccination rates have doubled. >> he said schools should make it mandatory for students and staff. >> it makes sense by getting more and more people vaccinated. >> reporter: some health experts looking beyond the current surge. >> there will probably be other variants that come down the pike and we want to be prepared this team. we want to have a fully vaccinated community. >> reporter: the cdc says the current vaccines appear to offer good protection against all

coronavirus strains. and in new york governor andrew cuomo is requiring 68,000 transit workers to get vaccinated or be tested weekly and in louisiana the governor is ordering a mask mandate again as hospitals are flooded with new cases. anne-marie? >> wow. bradley blackburn in new york. thank you so much. washington, d.c.'s, police department says two more officers who responded to the january 6th riot at the u.s. capitol have died by suicide. that brings to four the number of known suicides by officers who guarded the building that day. police say 18-year veteran officer gunther hashida was found dead in his home last thursday. house speaker nancy pelosi said hashida was a hero who risked his life to save the capitol. another officer kyle defreytag died by suicide. the biden administration is putting pressure on states and cities after a federal eviction

ban expired. in a statement the white house said that it has approved more than $46 billion for rental assistance, but it said many local governments have been slow to act to distribute the money. now millions of americans face possible eviction. natali brand reports from capitol hill. >> 17, 15. >> reporter: mother of four and florida teacher jeanette herbert said she's fallen two months behind on her rent because of the pandemic. >> waiting on my income tax, that never came through. i understand the situation with the irs. because of covid they have been with less workers. >> reporter: she's now among the millions of americans who could face possible eviction after a federal moratorium expired over the weekend. >> it's not the moment when you want people couch surfing. you want people out on park benches sleeping. you want people in their homes. >> reporter: democratic lawmakers have called on the

biden administration to extend the moratorium, but the white house says a decision by the u.s. supreme court has tied their hands. the administration is now asking state and local governments to take faster action to speed up distribution of covid relief money that could help. only about $3 billion of the 46 billion in rental assistance had gone out as of the end of june. >> if some states and localities can get this out and effectively, there's no reason any state and locality can't. >> reporter: a group of states illinois, new jersey, california, new york has extended protections in place for the near future. advocates are asking for some time. >> we're here to urge our landlord partners to consider all the alternatives at your disposal before filing those eviction papers. >> reporter: advocates say in some states more than 1/4 of renters are behind on payments with the southeast considered

the hardest hit region. natali brandt, cbs news, washington. new york governor andrew cuomo was reportedly grilled by investigators for 11 hours about sexual harassment and misconduct allegations. "the new york times" says cuomo faced a barrage of questions about his treatment of women last month during a videotaped interview. the state attorney general is conducting the investigation after several women accused the governor of inappropriate kissing and touching. cuomo has apologized for anyone, quote, feel uncomfortable and denied the allegations. turning now to the summer olympics in tokyo. another gold medal for an american gymnast. jade carey took the top spot on floor exercises. she bounced back from a frightening stumble from the fault to finish first on the floor. the u.s. women's soccer team did not fare as well. the canadians won 1-0 on a penalty kick in the 74th minute.

unconstitutional because he was not allowed to call and question witnesses. he was released last year after serving 8 years of his 14 year prison sentence when then president trump commuted his sentence. a san francisco staple is back on the streets and there's a new ruling in the mollie tibbetts case. the des moines register reports a judge denied a request for a new trial for the man convicted of killing university of iowa student mollie tibbetts. he's convicted of first degree murder and that happened in may despite claiming he had been kidnapped by two masked men and framed for tibbetts murder. last month his attorneys said two new witnesses came forward claiming another man confessed to killing tibbetts. he will be sentenced later this month. the orlando sentinel said spirit airlines canceled nearly

half of its flights scheduled to depart from orlando airport. it came after flights were delayed over the weekend. yesterday's cancellations were a proactive effort to recover from the system wide weekend disruptions. it blamed weather and operational challenges for the weekend problems. passengers in orlando though were frustrated. >> so this line, i started back there last night at midnight. i got to the front at 9 a.m. this morning. >> you were in the line for nine hours? >> nine hours. i'm about to cry. nine hours. get to the front, ask to speak to a supervisor. waited two hours. did not get one soul. >> spirit says it's working around the clock to get back on track. and the "san francisco chronicle" says the city's iconic cable cars are back on the streets. some of the cars were rolling and ringing their bells again yesterday after service was don march of 2020 due to the

and "the new york times" says new york governor andrew cuomo was grilled by investigators for 11 hours about sexual harassment and misconduct allegations. cuomo faced a barrage of questions about his treatment of women last month during a videotaped interview. he denies the allegations. doctors are sounding the alarm over new research showing a link between drinking and cancer. nearly 750,000 new cases were blamed on alcohol abuse last year at a time when people had been drinking more. nancy chen reports. >> the to you more's here. >> reporter: a new study finds over 4% of all new cancer cases in 2020 were caused by alcohol consumption. while most cancers linked alcohol use were in people who have more than two drinks a day, more than 100,000 cases worldwide were in people who averaged less than that. even two drinks a day can lead to this increased risk?
