it's thursday, august 5th, 2021. this is the "cbs morning news." breaking overnight, an out-of-control wildfire tears through a small community in northern california destroying homes and businesses. criminal investigation. possibly more trouble ahead for new york governor andrew cuomo following a lengthy sexual harassment investigation. olympic glory. an american shot putter sets a new world record winning another gold medal. the drought he breaks for team the drought he breaks for team usa. captioning funded by cbs good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with a story that is breaking overnight as firefighters try to save a

historic town from california's largest wildfire. the dixie fire tore through greenville, gold rush-era town about 280 miles northeast of san francisco. downtown businesses and surrounding homes burned. " ogcr seeing a gas station, hotel, and bar leveled. so far 67 houses and structures have been destroyed. about 800 people live in greenville. additional evacuation orders were issued for about 15,000 people in the area. >> think one thing and you think i'm safe, and then the next minute they give you a warning get out. >> the fire spread amid red flag warnings issued warning of hot, bone-dry conditions of winds up to 40 miles per hour. the three-week-old dixie fire has grown to more than 278,000 acres. it is just one of close to 100 wildfires burning in 13 states. and the number of coronavirus cases around the world has now surpassed 200

million. more than 35 million of those are in the united states where the highly contagious delta variant is rapidly spreading infections. the cdc says the variant now account for 93% of covid-19 cases in the u.s. and the biden administration might soon require all foreign visitors to prove they've been fully vaccinated before being allowed into the country. bradley blackburn has the latest from new york. bradley, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, this morning more businesses have announced that they will take a hard line, too, and require employees to get the shot. microsoft and tyson foods are both demanding that workers get vaccinated before they can return to work. but those kinds of mandates will take time to roll out, and right now the virus is spreading fast. the coronavirus' summer surge continues to grow. the u.s. is now approaching 100,000 new cases a day. a month ago that number was

below 15,000. >> the virus in our community is spreading rapidly.e. it's spreading very intensely. >> reporter: some experts believe the situation is about to get worse. >> this virus is so extremely contagious, your chances of getting by, getting through this without having to become vaccinated or infected is essentially zero. >> reporter: most new cases involve the delta variant, and most hospitalizations now involve unvaccinated people. >> it's just keep increasing and thought we would have been okay last week, and this week is even higher. >> reporter: so far only half the u.s. population is fully vaccinated. cbs news has learned that the pentagon will soon require active duty troops to be immunized. the white house is planning to require nearly all foreign visitors to be vaccinated before they can enter the country. >> we cannot get out of it unless the whole world gets out of it together. >> reporter: as some countries begin offering booster shots, the world health organization has called for a moratorium on the additional doses saying most

of the world has yet to receive even a single vaccine. israel, france, and germany are already giving out booster shots. u.s. authorities are still looking at the data on whether they're necessary. anne-marie, yesterday the white house called the w.h.o.'s request a false choice. they say the u.s. has enough supply to donate vaccines to other countries and still provide boosters here if they are needed. anne-marie? >> they say that there's enough for everyone who wants a shot. bradley blackburn in new york. thank you very much. >> reporter: thank you. so this morning, new york governor andrew cuomo is resisting calls to resign after a report said that he sexually harassed at least 11 women. his days in office may be numbered. cbs news has learned state lawmakers are ready to start the process of impeachment. nikki battiste reports. rorter: cuomo is fighting for his political life. >> my father used to say, god

rest his soul, that politics is an ugly business. >> reporter: the embattled three-term governor is flatly rejecting calls from across the political spectrum and his accusers to resign. and new york lawmakers now say it comes one day after an explosive report by the state attorney general's office concluded that cuomo sexually harassed at least 11 women, most of whom were current and former new york state employees, by unwelcome touching and suggestive comments. the report details a litany of complaints including how cuomo inappropriately touched and kissed a female state trooper he hired into his security detail even though she didn't meet the required three years of experience with the state police. and a series of other incidents -- cuomo grabbed a woman identified as executive assistant number one, by her private parts including the butt and the breast. >> let me be clear. that never happened. >> reporter: the 63-year-old

said his intentions had been misinterpreted and blamed cultural and generational differences. >> putting your hand up a woman's shirt and touching their breast is not generational. >> reporter: now four district attorneys have launched criminal probes, requesting documents from the attorney general's investigation. another accuser, lindsay boylan, said she plans to sue for retaliatory actions taken by the governor and top aides to discredit her. the bar remains high for a criminal prosecution. >> when you're looking at proving a criminal case in a court of law, you are looking at the highest possible bar. it is difficult to get to that final level of getting a conviction. and a prosecutor has to take that into consideration. >> reporter: people familiar with the situation tell cbs news there's an understanding among new york lawmakers that if the governor does not resign by the end of the weekend, they will move quickly to impeach. that process could take about a month. nikki battiste, cbs news, new york. the hurricane season is

expected to be busier than first thought. the national oceanic and moc mi updated its hurricane outlook. it's now expecting 15 to 21 named storms instead of the 13 to 20. meteorologists expect up to ten of the storms to become hurricanes. last year saw a record 30 named storms. it was a big day for american athletes at the summer olympics in tokyo. the u.s. men's basketball team is headed to the gold medal game after rallying to defeat australia 97-78. the americans trailed by 15 points in the second quarter. they'll play the winner of the game between sylvania and france. the u.s. women's beach volleyball team will battle australia for the gold medal. april ross and alix klineman beat switzerland in the semifinals. the win assures the u.s. of a beach volleyball medal for the seventh straight summer games. and american ryan crouser broke his own olympic record on his

lebanon. there's a reported front-runner in the search to replace alex trebek on "jeopardy!," and authorities are investigating a deadly van crash. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports that at least ten people died when a van carrying migrants crashed on a remote anyway south texas. authorities say 29 migrants were packed into the van yesterday when the driver, who was speeding, lost control and slammed into a metal utility pole and a stop sign in encino. they say the van was designed to hold 15 passengers. "the hill" reports arkansas republican governor asa hutchinson says that he regrets signing a ban on mask mandates in schools. he's calling the state legislature back into session to reverse the decision. if passed, it would allow school districts to decide if they want mask mandates. hutchinson said he signed it the bill because of reduced covid-19 case numbers and he knew a veto would be overridden by state

lawmakers. >> i signed it for those reasons, that our cases were at a low point. everything has changed now. and yes, in hindsight, i wish that had not become law. >> coronavirus cases in arkansas have soared in recent weeks. lawmakers say it will be difficult to lift the ban before school starts since it would need a two-thirds vote. and "variety" says "jeopardy!" executive producer mike richards is in advanced negotiations with sony pictures television to become the permanent host of the show. richards was one of the guest hosts who filled in since alex trebek's death last november. he joined the show as executive producer last year after hosting other shows including "the pyramid" and "divided" on the game show network. a spokesman said negotiations were ongoing with several potential hosts. still ahead, a mystery involving mike pompeo. investigators want to know what happened to an expensive bottle

concerns about what could be a faltering pandemic economic recovery. a report from payroll processor adp says 330,000 jobs were added by the private sector last month. that fell short of economists' expectations. the labor department releases its jobs report tomorrow. yesterday the dow lost 323 points. the nasdaq added 19 points, and the s&p 500 was down 20 points. target is offering a free college education for its employees. the company plans to spend $200 million over the next four years to jump-start the new program. it would help workers with undergraduate and associate jors at different schools.d the program will be available this fall to more than 340,000 full-time and part-time employees. cbs is boosting wages to $15 an hour by next summer. the pharmacy giant says it will begin to increase hourly pay starting this month through next july.

cvs which has nearly 300,000 employees currently starts its workers at $11 an hour, but it says more than 65% of its hourly employees are already make more than $15 an hour. and may the force with be you if you plan to stay at the new "star wars" hotel at disneyland. the company revealed pricing yesterday for the much-anticipated opening of galactic star cruiser next year. prices start at $4,800 for two people for two nights for the fully immersive experience. now it covers meals, admission to hollywood studios, and the "star wars" themed "galaxy edge" and more. i want to highlight that i said the prices start at $4,800. and for that much money, i want to be an extra in a movie. >> right? exactly. like i know it's fully immersive, but what i want to know is is there an all-you-can-eat buffet, is it open all night long, because i'm about to eat about $5,000 worth of food to make up for that
