it's friday, august 6th, 2021. this is the "cbs morning news." superspreader concerns. the nation's largest motorcycle rally gets under way today with fears it could lead to a massive spike in new covid infections. reduced to rubble. a massive wildfire guts a historic town in northern california. why some residents are pulling guns on firefighters even as the flames continue to spread. nearing completion. the deadline given to new york governor andrew cuomo as state lawmakers decide whether to impeach him. ♪ good morning, good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green.

with the delta variant racing across the u.s. the cdc says the number of americans getting vaccinated is going up. the u.s. is averaging just over 407,000 new shots every day, that is the highest it's been since early june. but infections are up as well with more than 106,000 new cases reported yesterday. all this comes as the sturgis motorcycle rally starts today in south dakota. as many as 700,000 people are expected, leading to fears of a superspreader event. more than 400,000 people attended last year's rally which health experts say caused widespread virus transmission throughout the nation. bradley blackburn has the very latest from new york. bradley, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. that surge in vaccinations is happening as more officials try to -- new tactics to encourage people to get the shot and here in new york the mayor says that after they announced that vaccine mandate, vaccinations for first doses jumped 40%, but

here and all across the country covid cases are rising, too. covid-19 infections, hospitalizations and deaths are all rising in the u.s., particularly in the south. >> a beginning of we have lots of the delta variant and low vaccination coverage. >> reporter: doctors say more and more young people are falling ill during this summer's surge. >> i don't think the virus is targeting kids necessarily, i just think there is a firestorm under way and kids are getting swept up in it. >> reporter: with schools reopening in month public health officials are pushing to get shots into more people's arms. >> the ultimate end game of all this is vaccination and that's why we continue to harp on that in a very, very proactive way. >> reporter: experts say rising you have to gt because peait for t w time here. and then it might be the bad

time that it's too late for you. >> reporter: yesterday california became the first state to mandate covid shots for all health care workers. the rule applies to almost 2 million employees of hospitals, nursing homes and medical offices. and on the question of booster shots, moderna now says that anyone who had its vaccine will need a third dose by winter. pfizer has already been arguing for boosters. anne-marie, there are reports this morning that the fda is working on its own plan for booster shots. they would likely go to the immunocompromised and to elderly and we could see that plan sometime soon. >> wow. bradley blackburn in new york. bradley, thank you so much. >> thank you. well, it looks like new jersey school kids and staff will have to wear masks when classes begin i aew weeks. governor phil mphy is expected to announce today that school employees and students from kindergarten to 12th grade will be required to mask up. it's an about-face for the governor. a few weeks ago he said that it

would take a deterioration of covid-19 data to require masks. infection rates have been rising in the state in recent weeks. ahead on "cbs this morning" we would talk with education secretary miguel cardona about his new roadmap for a safe return to school this year. more than 25,000 people are under evacuation orders in northern california where firefighters are struggling to stop the dixie fire which wiped out a small historic town. the blaze gutted more than 100 homes and businesses in greenville, a former gold rush town with buildings dating back to the 1800s. it's now the sixth largest wildfire in california history and it's one of several fires burning out west that can be seen from satellite. as johnson vigliotti reports some residents are refusing to leave their homes. >> we lost greenville tonight. >> reporter: this is all that's left of greenville's library, it looked like this until the dixie fire ravaged this historic

nort calif gold rush town. in just hours the blaze destroyed one structure after another, including the post office, a temple, businesses and homes. >> it's devastating. i believe i saw a sign over there yesterday that had a grand opening for a music shop and a cafe just right over there. >> reporter: raging since last month high temperatures, low humidity and gusty winds fueled the fire's explosive growth this week. in some cases residents are making tier' jobs even tougher. >> we have firefighters that are getting guns pulled out on them because people don't want to evacuate. >> reporter: the dixie fire is california's largest wildfire this year. it now covers more than 300,000 acres. on thursday planes dropped fire retardant in a desperate effort to bring it under control. more than three hours away people on the california/nevada border fled the river fire that created fire balls like this one. some had only the clothes on their back. >> shaking like a leaf, but it's okay, i've got my family together and that's what's important. >> reporter: in the west more than 20,000 tier are battling 97

wildfires in 13 states. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, greenville, california. new york state lawmakers are giving governor andrew cuomo one week to provide additional evidence before possibly moving forward with impeachment proceedings. the assembly's judiciary committee has been investigating whether there are grounds to impeach cuomo over sexual harassment allegations and other matters. findings from a probe overseen by the state's attorney general released this week said cuomo sexually harassed 11 women. cuomo denies making any inappropriate sexual advances. the justice department is launching a civil rights investigation into the phoenix police department. attorney general merrick garland announced a sweeping review yesterday. it will look into whether officers have used excessive force, discriminatory behavior, retaliation and if they violated the rights of homeless people. the investigation comes after years of complaints from civil rights advocates.

>> i'm confident in a lot of the things that we've done here that haven't been done in other parts of the country, so i'm looking forward to them seeing what we've done right, and also what we can improve on. >> this is the justice department's third investigation into a law enforcement agency in the biden administration following earlier probes into the minneapolis and louisville police. and now to the summer olympics in tokyo. and the success of the american women. the u.s. women's beach volleyball team won a gold medal as april ross and alix klineman defeated australia. it's ross' third medal in as many olympics and the first for klineman. the u.s. women's basketball team will play for its seventh straight gold medal after defeating serbia 79-59 in the semi-finals. that makes 54 wins in a row for the american women in olympic play. and the u.s. women's soccer team is taking home a bronze medal. megan rapinoe and carli lloyd each scored two goals in a 4-3 win over australia.

reports texas governor greg abbott called a second special session of the state legislature as democratic lawmakers remain in washington, d.c. abbott ordered legislators to reconvene tomorrow one day after the current 30-day special session ends. the governor wants lawmakers to pass a controversial republican-led bill that would restrict voting in the state. democrats blocked the measure by walking out at the end of the regular session in may and the start of a special session last month. the "washington post" says president biden signed a bill awarding congressional gold medals to law enforcement officers who responded to the deadly january riot at the u.s. capitol. mr. biden signed the bill yesterday during a ceremony in the white house rose garden and he thanked the officers for saving the lives of members of congress during the attack. >> the tragedy of that day deserves the truth above all else. we cannot allow history to be rewritten. we cannot allow the heroism of

these officers to be forgotten. >> the medals will be placed in four locations, capitol police headquarters, washington's metropolitan police department and the u.s. capitol and the smithsonian institution. and the "san francisco chronicle" says the city's police department released a photo showing a woman with an ak-47 assault rifle leaning out of a speeding car. police posted the photo on twitter says the woman holding the weapon was in the passenger's seat of a cadillac on july 11th. the tweet says that the vehicle had been impounded, police would not say if the gun toting woman or anyone else was arrested. still ahead, a ticket to space. what virgin galactic is charging customers for a seat on a rocket.

there is a new meaning to going out for a jog. oregon state university recently took out cassie for a 5k run. the school says the robot set a record as the first two-legged robot to use machine learning to control its running motions outside. now, she fell twice during the historic jog because of overheating and taking a turn too fast. cassie finished the run in 43 minutes and 49 seconds. the school developed her with a $1 million grant from the u.s. department of defense. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, there are privacy concerns about a new iphone tool and how much virgin galactic is charging for a trip to space. elise preston is at the new york stock exchange with those stories and more. good morning, elise. >> good morning, anne-marie.

some encouraging jobs data and strong corporate earnings reports helped push the stock market higher. yesterday the labor department reported that new unemployment claims dropped by 14,000 last week. today it releases its jobs report for july. the dow gained 271 points, the nasdaq added 114 points to close at a record and the s&p 500 also hit a record rising 26 points. apple is planning to scan iphones for images of child sexual abuse. the company will test a program called neural match to detect known images of child sex abuse. the images are scanned before they're uploaded to i cloud. if there's a match, the image will be reviewed by a human who can notify law enforcement. critics say the system could be misused by the government to mos dients. ye coronavirus. it's now giving users the ability to filter restaurants and other locations based on vaccination

three, two, one. >> well, the race is on. chicago held its annual ducky derby yesterday, more than 65,000 rubber ducks were dropped into the chicago river to race down the water. all proceeds benefit special olympics illinois. it's the end of an era for soccer fans. after 17 years lionel messi is parting ways with barcelona. the team said al co financial regulations made it impossible to sign the argentina star. in his previous contract he reportedly earned $163 million per season. he's been with the team since he was a teenager, helping them win numerous domestic and international titles.
